Never Wanted Kids (Until I Did): IVF & a Miracle Baby with Anjelah Johnson-Reyes

I have been obsessed with Anjelah Johnson-Reyes since the nail salon video, so yes, I fangirled the entire time. Before she was a comedian, she was a Raiderette, and I was a Patriots cheerleader, so we had to settle that first. We could fight in the streets about it, but she would win. Then we got into the part of her story I did not know. Anjelah and her husband never wanted kids. Their careers were the baby. Then COVID shut everything down, and for the first time in her life she thought, "If I never tour again, I think I'm okay." And right behind that thought: did I mess up? At 38 she found out she had very few eggs, went through two rounds of retrievals, ended up with five eggs and zero viable embryos, and told her husband she was taking a left turn off the freeway. Then, while she was getting her body ready for her comedy special taping, she got pregnant naturally. Her miracle baby, Rosie. We talked about being older moms (the knees, girl, the knees), the three-day rule for touring away from her daughter, the screen time rule that went out the window, why she and her husband stopped posting Rosie online, and how she wishes she had shown up for her friends when they had babies. I could have talked to her all day. In this episode we get real about: How a Raiderette became a stand-up comedian, and what cheerleading taught her about being a public figure Never wanting kids, until COVID made her ask whether her career was actually fulfilling her Five eggs, zero viable embryos, and the natural pregnancy that showed up right before her special Choosing not to live in fear during a high-risk pregnancy Becoming a mom later, and what this version of her gets to give her daughter Touring with a three-year-old at home, and letting your kids watch you chase your dreams Telling the new mom at the next table "great job getting the baby out at a restaurant" Why she and her husband stopped sharing Rosie on social media Momma, you can be a present, engaged mom AND still take time for yourself. Do I Still Get Periods?! (I'm 38, Not 88)

I recorded this one on my 39th birthday, with a lip I literally cannot move. I got a little lip flip, they did a little more than usual, and now I get to wait it out. Don't get a lip flip, guys. So if I talk weird or look funny on YouTube, that's why. A couple of weeks before my birthday, I woke up with a swollen, red, warm knee for no reason. Off to urgent care on a Sunday, where the doctor looked at me and asked, "Do you still get periods?" Ma'am. I just had a baby. He just turned one. My producer Jess (who just turned 40) agreed: straight to jail. It turned out to be bursitis, which explains the extra-thick Pilates mat I've been hiding behind. Then Jess and I got into the real stuff. Getting older as a woman, why men get "distinguished" while we get told to keep up, and the women who are hot AND aging out loud. Plus my very lofty next-chapter goals, the hobby question nobody can answer, and my mom, who I'm still trying to convince that it's never too late to figure out what you want to be when you grow up. In this episode I get real about: The lip flip I regret (and why you can't just dissolve it) The bum knee, the urgent care visit, and the question that made me feel 88 Being a new mom postpartum AND approaching 40 at the same time Why my thirties beat my twenties, and why I'm not wishing away my last year of them Patriots cheerleader, Laker Girl, WWE... and my next lofty goals: the cover of Sports Illustrated and Roxie Hart on Broadway Needing something that's mine beyond being a mom, and what Anjelah Johnson-Reyes said that stuck with me Hobbies, my mom, and why nobody actually has it figured out Momma, you can love being a mom more than anything AND still need a dream that's just yours. Feel It to Heal It: Infertility, Pregnancy Loss & the Angel Baby Who Got Her Here with Abbe Feder

October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, and I could not think of anyone I would rather spend it with than Abbe Feder. Abbe trained as an actress, moved to LA, married a filmmaker, and then spent the better part of six years trying to become a mom. IUIs, four egg retrievals, eight transfers, a miscarriage, an ectopic pregnancy, and a lot of doctors telling her it was probably not going to happen. Now she runs InCircle Fertility, where she holds the hands of women going through exactly what she went through. We got into the part nobody warns you about: that your partner might handle a loss completely differently than you do. Abbe's husband was going to leave town while she was waiting to miscarry, because in his head, she was so strong and did he really need to sit there and watch it happen? I told her about my ectopic, when I was being transported by ambulance and my husband had to leave because his son had a haircut. Neither of our husbands are the bad guys here. They just did not know what they did not know, and both of them grew from it. Then Abbe told me about her Hail Mary round. Three embryos in, all three implanted, all three had heartbeats, and at 39 her doctors told her she could not safely carry triplets. She reduced from three to two. She still calls the third her angel baby, because that baby got her to her twins. I could have talked to her all day. In this episode we get real about: How an actress with a behavioral science degree ended up running a fertility coaching practice Why infertility takes over your entire brain, and why it is a grief nobody lets you talk about When your partner handles pregnancy loss completely differently than you do (and the growth on the other side of it) Feel it to heal it: take the help, ask for what you need, and give yourself permission to not be fine What to say when people keep saying the wrong thing, including Abbe's genius "don't check on me until May" move Three embryos, a reduction, and the angel baby who got her to her twins Why remembering your first due date is normal, and why you should book the trip Momma, you can be grateful for the family you have AND still remember the one you lost. Both are true. Thank god it's not just us. Listen to new episodes of Hot Mom Sh!t dropping every Tuesday. Follow along wherever you listen to podcasts. REPLAY: Mental Load, Mom Guilt & Quitting Breastfeeding Without the Shame with Dr. Sanam Shamtobi

We have had Dr. S on twice in a row now, and every single time my DMs fill up with the same thing — where do I start with her, what was the first one, send me that episode. So this week I am bringing it back. This is the very first conversation I ever had with Dr. Sanam Shamtobi, before she was a regular around here, and it still holds up. Here is the thing about this one: I came in with a breastfeeding question. That was it. I was six months postpartum, exclusively pumping with a toddler and a newborn, completely over it, and feeling guilty for being over it. And I left with a completely different way of thinking about mom guilt, identity, and why the mental load feels so invisible to the people we live with. She also said the three words I could not say to myself. I asked if I was allowed to stop breastfeeding just because I wanted to, and she looked at me and said that wanting to stop is exactly the reason to stop. I have thought about that a hundred times since. If you are new here, start with this one. If you were here in May, it hits different now that you know her. In this episode we get real about: Why partners are not clueless, they just need a different kind of direction (Dr. S literally makes handouts for husbands in therapy) The mental load, and why it is so hard to explain to someone who is not carrying it The "just a mom" identity crisis, and why the mom hat is less of a hat and more of a tattoo on your brain Whether dads love their kids the same way we do, and the biology underneath it Wanting to quit pumping at six months, and the permission I did not know I needed Matrescence, the word somebody should have taught all of us Why mom guilt will always find a new target no matter what you do Momma, you can be completely done with something and still love your kid more than anything on earth. Both are true. Neither one cancels the other out. Thank god it's not just us. Listen to new episodes of Hot Mom Sh!t dropping every Tuesday. Follow along wherever you listen to podcasts. Postpartum Rage Is Real: Mom Rage, DMER & Postpartum Anxiety with Dr. Sanam Shamtobi

Dr. S is back, and this time we actually made it to the questions — which, if you heard the last one, is a genuine achievement for the two of us. I feel lighter every single time I talk to her, and I needed this one. We started with the question I had been sitting on for ages without knowing I was sitting on it: is it normal to feel rage toward your partner after having a baby, even when he is actually a good partner? Her answer was yes, 100%, and it has almost nothing to do with him. So I told her the thing I have never really told anybody. After my first, I would come downstairs after bedtime — my husband had cleaned the entire kitchen, put every dish away, done everything — and there would be one dirty bottle on the counter. And I would see red. I wouldn't yell at him. I would just stand there unscrewing it, washing it, slamming the dishwasher, quietly hating a man who had done nothing wrong. I carried that guilt for a long time. Dr. S listened to the whole story and said: that's it. That's postpartum rage, exactly. And by the way, you are still postpartum at eight and nine months, which is another thing nobody bothers to mention. Then we got into DMER — dysphoric milk ejection reflex — which we both had, and which neither of us knew had a name until we went looking. For me it felt like homesickness every single time I nursed. Dr. S saw three or four lactation consultants and not one of them asked; it is the reason she opened her practice. And when I asked what she would say to a mom who is postpartum right now, she said the thing that has been rattling around my head since: women will cry to their friends all day long and still never sit down and actually process any of it. We push it down with a fury. In this episode we get real about: Whether it is normal to rage at a genuinely good partner, and why the 3AM math has nothing to do with him How to have the unequal-load conversation — and why the middle of the rage is the worst possible time to have it The rage that shows up because parenting looks easy for him and hard for you How much rage is normal, and the line where Dr. S says go get help The dirty bottle on the counter, and all the guilt I carried before anyone gave it a name DMER, the homesick feeling during letdown that nobody warned either of us about Why women will tell a friend everything and still not book the one hour a week for themselves Momma, if you have ever loved your husband and wanted to break a bottle over his head in the same five minutes, both of those are true. Neither one cancels the other out. Thank god it's not just us. Listen to new episodes of Hot Mom Sh!t dropping every Tuesday. Follow along wherever you listen to podcasts. Is Being a Mom Enough? (Mom Guilt, Gentle Parenting, and Why "Breast Is Best" Has to Go — with Dr. Sanam Shamtobi)

Dr. S is back, you guys, and thank god, because you have all been taking my unhinged advice for months now and I am not qualified to give it. She showed up with barely a voice — her toddler had been in school for approximately two days and already brought something home — which is honestly the exact energy this episode needed. My son did the same thing to me. Two moms, both sick, both in it, finally handing you over to an actual expert. I asked her the question I have been chewing on for months: is being a mom enough for me? Because some days I never want to leave my kids and I just want to be home with them, and other days I need something that is mine, and the guilt shows up either way. What she said about guilt — that the feeling itself isn't the problem, letting it drive every single decision is — rearranged something in my head. We also got into whether motherhood counts as a job at all (she has thoughts), why none of us have a village anymore, the toy rotation on Instagram that sent her into a spiral, and her hot take on gentle parenting, which involves a dad, an eight-year-old named Jimmy, a pond, and a turtle nobody did anything about. And then producer Jess took the mic, and I am so glad she did. When Dr. S said she cannot stand "breast is best," Jess shared what it was like to hear that while her daughter was in the NICU for seven weeks and her milk never came in. Fed is best. That is the whole thing. In this episode we get real about: Is being a mom enough? Why getting rid of mom guilt isn't actually the goal, and what to do with it instead The belief behind why motherhood somehow isn't "a job" until you're paying someone else to do it Her hot take on gentle parenting,  The physical tells that you're spiraling, and the body scan that catches it before the whole day is gone Producer Jess on the NICU, formula, and what "breast is best" cost her that it never should have Momma, if you have ever loved being home with them and quietly needed something that was just yours, both of those are true at the same time. Neither one cancels the other out. Thank god it's not just us. Listen to new episodes of Hot Mom Sh!t dropping every Tuesday. Follow along wherever you listen to podcasts. Just Tell Me I'm a Good Mom (A Hot Mom Q&A on Preschool, Solids, and Saving My Marriage in Therapy)

This was one of those weekends where I genuinely don't know how I'm still standing. Bruno Mars, two sick kids, a three-minute nap that somehow ruined my entire Sunday, and by Monday I was Googling how tall Bruno Mars actually is instead of sleeping. Anyway. You guys have been sending me questions since I started this podcast, so today I finally sat down and answered some of them — no script, no notes, just me and my opinions, which come with a very large asterisk: I am not an expert, I'm just a mom who's figured a few things out the hard way (and gotten plenty wrong). In this episode we get real about: The Bruno Mars concert, the three-minute nap that broke me, and why I couldn't just let it go Why we put Dimitri in preschool before he even turned three, and crying in the parking lot anyway Starting solids with baby number two versus baby number one — what actually changed (spoiler: mostly me) Why marriage counseling has been one of the best things Matt and I have ever done, and what being the "default parent" really costs Learning to just say what I need instead of slamming dishes in the sink and hoping he gets the hint The line that lives in my head now: I don't care if I look hot, I just want to hear that I'm a good mom Momma, if you've ever needed someone to just tell you you're doing a good job — this one's for you. What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Hotter with Laura Clery

I finished her book ten minutes before we hit record. Ten minutes. I have a two-year-old and a ten-month-old, and this is the second book I've read in three years — so understand what I'm telling you when I say I could not put it down. I texted my mom about it. I told Laura she's my new best friend, out loud, on the recording, like a normal person. Laura Clery has 26 million followers, three books, and a new one called What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Hotter — which, if that's not hot mom sh!t, I don't know what is. She wrote it over four years while her marriage came apart in real time, so it reads less like a memoir and more like a thriller you keep having to remind yourself actually happened to a real person. And she still made it funny, because that's what she does. We got into all of it: the boundaries she didn't have, the ones she has now, why motherhood is the thing that made her brave, and what "hotter" actually means when it has nothing to do with your face. In this episode we get real about: Why Laura swears her lack of a filter is the actual secret to 26 million followers and the times that has cost her Waking up to a phone full of calls and texts because her ex announced their separation on YouTube before she'd even told her own mom Being told to pick a lane and why she throws all of it on one page instead Why motherhood, not sobriety and not career wins, is what made her the bravest she's ever been Going from codependent to running her whole life by herself Comparison, haters, and the practice that keeps her self-worth out of the comment section What "hotter" actually means in that title, and her AND: she can love being a mom and want to be very far away from her kids for a minute Momma, if you've been quietly waiting for permission to be more than one thing at a time, this is it. Hot Mom Sh!t is the podcast that lives in the AND — because you can look good and be a good mom. You can love your kids fiercely and still need to be more than just their mom. Hosted by Leah Van Dale, this is the show for the mom who is done pretending to have it all together, all of the time. Hear the real stories, honest conversations, and the moments Leah probably should have kept to herself but didn't. This isn’t a show about doing it perfectly. It’s about the raw side of motherhood exactly as it is — hot and messy.
