Voices Carry For Animals Podcast #536 - Humane World for Animals

Produced & Hosted by Debbie Dahmer aka "Mama Bear" Guest: Keith Dane- Equine Consultant at Humane World for Animals Topics: International donkey hide trade. Ending horse slaughter & New York City carriage horses. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: International donkey hide trade https://www.brookeusa.org/advocacy Millions of donkeys are slaughtered annually for their hides to produce ejiao. The domestic Chinese and international demand for donkey hides is approximately 8–10 million hides per year but the annual supply in China is less than 1.8 million. This demand has led to the slaughter of massive numbers of donkeys across the globe.  ACTION ALERT! Contact your Legislators! SUPPORT H.R. 5544 The Ejiao Act- The Donkey Hide Crisis Nationwide Number (202) 224-3121 -Give your zip code https://www.brookeusa.org/ejiao-act#/ ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Each year, thousands of American equines—working, racing and companion horses, donkeys, mules and even children's ponies—are horrifically slaughtered for human consumption. They are inhumanely transported long distances across our borders, in cramped trailers without food, water or rest. ACTION ALERT! Speak Out to end horse slaughter--SUPPORT H.R.1661 & S.775 SAFE Act- Save America's Forgotten Equines https://secure.humaneworld.org/page/165162/action/1?locale=en-US :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: New York City carriage horses --A horse-drawn carriage ride may look charming, but behind this tourist attraction is a life of hardship for the horses forced to pull it. These sensitive animals are made to haul heavy carriages through crowded streets, loud traffic and vehicle exhaust—conditions that can be stressful, unsafe and completely unnatural for them. Long hours on hard pavement can contribute to painful leg, hoof and joint problems, while breathing polluted air and working in extreme heat or cold can put their health at risk. ACTION ALERT! End horse-drawn carriages in New Your City https://secure.humaneworld.org/page/196085/petition/1 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: The lives of many Tennessee walking horses are filled with fear and pain. Unscrupulous trainers intentionally inflict pain on a horse's legs and hooves to force the horse to perform an exaggerated, high-stepping gait known as the "Big Lick" that is rewarded in some show rings. They use a variety of gruesome techniques, including caustic chemicals that burn the horse's flesh, chains and heavy, stacked horseshoes to accomplish this artificial gait.  Help stop horse abuse which is known as "soring,"  The PAST Act (H.R. 1684) would amend the Horse Protection Act ACTION ALERT! https://secure.humaneworld.org/page/165161/action/1

Voices Carry For Animals Podcast #535 - Humane World for Animals

Produced & Hosted by Debbie Dahmer aka "Mama Bear" Guest: Kate MacFall - Florida State Director of Humane World for Animals Topics: Puppy Mills Legislation. The Importance of Getting Involved with Animal Advocacy Legislation Year Round- How to get involved and Talk Action for the animals in need.. Contacting your State Reps and Senators on current bills introduced in legislation. It's time to end the horrifically cruel treatment of dogs in mass breeding operations. https://www.humaneworld.org/en/issue/stopping-puppy-mills What are Puppy Mills? Inhumane high-volume dog breeding facilities that churn out puppies for profit, ignoring the needs of the pups and their mothers. In puppy mills, mother dogs spend their entire lives in cramped cages with little to no personal attention. Due to poor sanitation, overbreeding and a lack of preventive veterinary care, the puppies frequently suffer from a variety of health issues, creating heartbreaking challenges for families who should be enjoying the delights of adopting a new family member. Efforts to end puppy mill cruelty include supporting legislative reforms, conducting investigations, pursuing litigation and raising public awareness. Humane World for work to improve breeding standards, strengthen enforcement and hold irresponsible breeders and sellers accountable. There are an estimated 10,000 puppy mills across the country, where mother dogs spend their entire lives in cramped cages. Take action to help save puppies and their moms from suffering in these cruel mass-breeding operations. Voices Carry For Animals Podcast #534 - Wildlife SOS

Produced & Hosted by Debbie Dahmer aka "Mama Bear" Guest: Nikki Sharp, Executive Director of Wildlife SOS (USA) Topics: Discuss elephant tourism, the welfare concerns behind elephant rides and direct-contact attractions, and how travelers can make more ethical wildlife tourism choices. A few moments of fun on an elephant’s back for a tourist can mean a lifetime of abuse for the elephant. Few people realize that the captive elephant giving rides to tourists were wild elephants not so long ago. Elephants are wild animals with wild instincts and belong in the deep jungles. Then how is it they are found giving rides to tourists in Asia? It all starts when the baby elephant is illegally trapped and separated from its natal herd. This is followed by a harsh training procedure called “phajaan” that uses pain and fear to break the spirit of the wild pachyderm. Severe confinement and isolation while being restrained with tight ropes and subjected to beating, prodding with bull hooks and spears, starvation and constant psychological abuse eventually makes the elephant a reliable tourist ride. Once this inhumane process is completed, what one has is one less elephant in the wild and one more elephant with a destiny of torture slated for it. Sitting on the back of an elephant may be on a tourist’s bucket list for a royal experience, however the veil behind this seemingly harmless experience conceals a very dark secret, a secret that elephant owners and their riders will hide from the naïve tourists. The only way to train an elephant to perform tourist rides, tricks in circuses, weddings or other public functions and processions is through keeping the elephant in constant pain, fear. There is sadly no other way! Moreover, it is not safe for tourists to ride elephants. Elephants are wild animals, and despite years of breaking their spirits, they are very much susceptible to succumbing to sudden trigger reactions like fear, stress and anger. Very often in a bid to escape their torturous lives, these elephants run amok or retaliate – putting at risk the lives of tourists and bystanders as well as the persons riding them. Voices Carry For Animals Podcast #532- Pilots To The Rescue

Produced & Hosted by Debbie Dahmer aka "Mama Bear" Guest: Michael Schneider- Founder, Executive Director & Chief Pilot aka "Top Dog" · Pilots to the Rescue Topics: Pilots to the Rescue's Mission. Helped 7,000+ furry souls saved & counting! Animal rescue nonprofit with wings, flying pets out of danger and into loving arms. Pilots To The Rescue: They fly to save lives. Pilots To The Rescue founder and Top Dog Michael Schneider embarked on his first animal rescue mission in 2015. He found out through the animal rescue community about a group of puppies that had been abandoned in a ditch in rural North Carolina. These poor souls along with a brand-new litter of puppies had been scheduled for euthanasia just because there was no space for them at their current shelter. Michael was both shocked and saddened to learn that this shelter was so overcrowded that the dogs had no chance of being adopted. They had to be euthanized in a matter of days. Michael knew of several local shelters that had plenty of space, there was just no way for staff members to get to the dogs in time. That’s when Michael and his longtime friend and fellow pilot Brian Orter sprang into action, flying down to North Carolina in just over an hour. After picking up the dogs, they flew back up to the East Coast, where the dogs were given the help and healing, they needed to find happy, loving homes.
