EP05: The Pentagon Failed Its Audit Again. The Budget Went Up Anyway.

The Pentagon failed its financial audit for the eighth straight year. Auditors could not verify 64 cents of every dollar of budgetary resources, and the budget went up anyway. Meanwhile the same government grades SNAP to the second decimal. Markus Grant runs the mechanism: cost-plus contracts that pay a fee on top of whatever gets spent, award fees paid out for acceptable work, and a fighter program marketed as jobs in all fifty states so every member of Congress can find theirs. One side of the ledger gets an error-rate target. The other gets a bigger check. Key receipts: - 8: consecutive failed Pentagon audits, a disclaimer of opinion with 26 material weaknesses (DoD FY2025 audit) - 64 cents: of every dollar of budgetary resources that auditors could not verify - $900.6 billion enacted for fiscal 2026, $1.07 trillion proposed for fiscal 2027 - About $2.4 trillion: to contractors from 2020 to 2024, roughly 54% of Pentagon discretionary spending (Costs of War and Quincy Institute, July 2025) - 10.62%: the SNAP payment-error rate states are graded to Receipts and case file: theranter.com/case-file/the-audit-they-dont-run Newsletter: newsletter.theranter.com Watch on YouTube: youtube.com/@TheRanterOfficial

EP04: Why Your Rent Is So High. Your Landlords Share One Algorithm.

Your landlord says the market set your rent. The market was a piece of software. RealPage collects private lease data from landlords who are supposed to be competing, runs it through one pricing model called YieldStar, and hands each of them a rent recommendation. Nobody needs a back-room meeting when everyone reads off the same screen. Markus Grant walks through how the algorithm works, what it costs renters, and the one move you can make. Key receipts: - 13 million+ units: lease data feeding the model (DOJ complaint, Aug 2024; ProPublica) - About 80%: RealPage's share of the commercial revenue-management software market (DOJ complaint) - Nearly 60%: final prices that landed within 2.5% of the recommendation (DOJ complaint) - About $70 a month: extra rent in algorithm-priced buildings, about $3.8 billion out of renters in 2023 (White House CEA) Receipts and case file: theranter.com/case-file/the-rent-algorithm Newsletter: newsletter.theranter.com Watch on YouTube: youtube.com/@TheRanterOfficial

Where Your Rent Goes. It Leaves Before You Get the Key.

My college roommate made $240,000 selling a house. I came in seventh at an open house, behind an LLC with better credit than God. So where does your rent actually go? It leaves before you even get the key. By the time your rent check clears, it has already been promised to people you will never meet. The building was bought with borrowed money, the loan was bundled into a bond, and the bondholders get paid first, before anyone gets to the repair you called about. Markus Grant follows one dollar of rent down the waterfall, ledge by ledge, and shows where you stand in it. You are not on any ledge. You are the water. Key receipts: - About 1 in 6: homes bought by investors in Q2 2024, and about 1 in 4 of the lowest-priced homes (Redfin) - About 574,000: single-family rentals held by large institutional investors as of June 2022 (Urban Institute) - 90 percent: share of taxable income a REIT must pay out to shareholders each year (26 U.S.C. 857) - $48 million: Invitation Homes' FTC settlement over hidden fees and withheld deposits, with more than $47.2 million mailed back to renters in March 2026 - About $86 million: what the National Association of Realtors spent on lobbying in 2024, more than any other group (OpenSecrets) Receipts and case file: theranter.com/case-file/where-your-rent-goes Newsletter: newsletter.theranter.com Watch on YouTube: youtube.com/@TheRanterOfficial

Why "Nobody Went Back to Check" Is the Most Important Phrase in Journalism

The story everyone tells: Colonial India had a cobra problem. The British put a bounty on dead cobras. People started breeding cobras to collect it. The British canceled the program, the breeders released their worthless snakes, and the colony ended up with more cobras than when it started. It is the textbook example of perverse incentives. Nobody went back to check. Markus Grant tells the story everyone tells, then walks through what the record shows: the Bombay Natural History Society called the breeding highly improbable in 1887, no breeder was ever found, the dramatic version traces to an 1873 newspaper that printed it as "alleged," and the phrase "Cobra Effect" was coined by an economist in 2001. Then the same loop in American health care, where every fix bred the next one. The point is the method. The show's own founding metaphor gets the show's own test. Every claim sourced. When something doesn't hold up, we update. Receipts and case file: theranter.com/case-file/cobra-effect Newsletter: newsletter.theranter.com Watch on YouTube: youtube.com/@TheRanterOfficial

Junk Fees: The Price You Click Is Never the Price You Pay

The advertised price is the bait. The fees wait until your card is already out. In one class-action complaint, three concert tickets advertised at $870 came to $1,112.15 at checkout. The allegations are unproven. Markus Grant breaks down drip pricing from concert tickets to rent to checked bags, the settlements that prove it, and the one move that takes the leverage back: sort by total cost. Key receipts: - About 21 percent: extra revenue StubHub made by hiding a roughly 15 percent fee until checkout, in a randomized experiment on real buyers (Marketing Science, 2021) - $48 million: Invitation Homes' FTC settlement over hidden rental fees, with more than $47.2 million mailed back to renters in March 2026 - $24 million: Greystar's settlement with the FTC and Colorado over concealed rental fees (Dec 2025) Receipts and case file: theranter.com/case-file/junk-fees Newsletter: newsletter.theranter.com Watch on YouTube: youtube.com/@TheRanterOfficial

Facility Fees: When Your Doctor's Office Becomes a "Facility"

Same doctor. Same room. Same appointment. Then a hospital system buys the practice, rebills the office as a hospital outpatient department, and the visit comes with two bills instead of one. Markus Grant breaks down facility fees: a paperwork reclassification that can push the same visit 40 to 50 percent higher with no change in care. A sidebar: one mechanism, one move. Key receipts: - 40 to 50 percent: added cost once the same visit bills as hospital outpatient (HCCI; North Carolina Health News) - About $100: HCCI's estimated facility fee on a $116 office visit - $503, $488, $355: real facility fees for a pediatric visit, an ADHD medication appointment and a steroid injection (Stateline, Apr 2024) - Your right: a written good-faith estimate before you book (No Surprises Act) Receipts and case file: theranter.com/case-file/facility-fees Newsletter: newsletter.theranter.com Watch on YouTube: youtube.com/@TheRanterOfficial

EP03: Your Hospital Bill Is Wrong. Here's Why That's by Design.

Hospital bills are wrong on purpose. Before a doctor sees you, propensity-to-pay software scores what you can afford. The chargemaster sets a list price nobody negotiates down except insurers, so the people billed the full number are the roughly 27 million uninsured. When the bill can't be paid, the debt gets sold for one to four cents on the dollar and chased for the full amount. Markus Grant traces the trap from the first billing code to the collection call, and hands you the one sentence that forces out the itemized bill. Key receipts: - About 27 million: uninsured Americans, the only people billed the full chargemaster price - $2.30: charity care per $100 of spending at nonprofit hospitals, against $4.10 at government hospitals, while nonprofits collect $37.4 billion a year in tax breaks - 80 percent: nonprofit hospitals that give back less than their tax break is worth - $23 million: UCHealth's DOJ settlement over emergency-room upcoding, after more than 15,000 patient lawsuits filed under collection-company names - 32.99 percent: CareCredit's current standard APR, charged back to the purchase date if a promo balance remains - $39.35: a line item for a mother holding her own baby (NPR, 2016) Receipts and case file: theranter.com/case-file/the-billing-trap Newsletter: newsletter.theranter.com Watch on YouTube: youtube.com/@TheRanterOfficial

EP02: The Cure Heist. How Drugs Get Priced

In 2015, Martin Shkreli's Turing Pharmaceuticals raised the price of Daraprim from $13.50 to $750 a tablet overnight. Same molecule. Same factory. The only thing that changed was who owned the company. Markus Grant maps the system behind it: one drug, five different prices, and a pharmacy benefit manager in the middle that negotiates a rebate off the list price and keeps a cut. Three of them run about 80 percent of the prescriptions in the country. Then the four doors around the middleman. Key receipts: - $13.50 to $750: Daraprim, overnight (New York Times, Sept 2015) - About 80 percent: prescription claims run by the three biggest PBMs (FTC, July 2024) - 132: patents granted around Humira, an unchanged molecule (I-MAK) - $577 billion: what 14 large drug companies spent on buybacks and dividends from 2016 to 2020, $56 billion more than on R&D (House Oversight, 2021) - $751 million: health sector lobbying in 2024, the top sector (OpenSecrets) Receipts and case file: theranter.com/case-file/the-cure-heist Newsletter: newsletter.theranter.com Watch on YouTube: youtube.com/@TheRanterOfficial

EP01: Insurers Deny Claims in 1.2 Seconds. Almost Nobody Appeals.

In 2023, ProPublica reported that Cigna's PxDx system let its doctors deny claims in bulk at about 1.2 seconds each. Roughly 300,000 claims were denied in two months, and one medical director cleared around 121,000 of them. Cigna disputes the characterization. The architecture is the story: software flags a mismatch between the diagnosis and the procedure, a doctor signs off, and the claim is denied. The system is betting you are too tired to fight back. Markus Grant walks through how the machine works, where job-based coverage came from, who profits, and the one move that works: appeal. Key receipts: - About 1.2 seconds: review time per denied claim at Cigna (ProPublica, 2023) - About 300,000: claims denied in two months - 80 to 90 percent: appealed denials overturned for the patient (KFF; Health Affairs) - About 0.3 percent: denied in-network marketplace claims that are ever appealed (KFF) - 8.7 to 22.7 percent: UnitedHealth's post-acute denial rate before and after nH Predict (STAT; Senate PSI) Receipts and case file: theranter.com/case-file/the-house-always-wins Newsletter: newsletter.theranter.com Watch on YouTube: youtube.com/@TheRanterOfficial
