What Your Eyes Reveal About Your Health | Dr Don Railsback

What Your Eyes Reveal About Your Health | Dr Don Railsback When was the last time you had your eyes examined? Not because you needed new glasses. Not because your vision had changed. Simply as part of looking after your health. For many of us, eye care only becomes a priority when something goes wrong. But our eyes offer a unique opportunity to observe structures that can provide valuable information about vascular, neurological and general health — sometimes before someone is aware that anything has changed. In this episode of the Revital Health Podcast, Jodi speaks with Dr Don Railsback, optometrist and CEO of Vision Care Direct, about why eye care needs to become a much bigger part of the preventative-health conversation. Don spent years in clinical optometry before moving into healthcare leadership, but his underlying mission has remained the same: helping people access quality eye care earlier and supporting the practitioners providing it. In this conversation, we explore: • Why an eye examination is about far more than whether you need glasses • What an optometrist is actually examining inside the eye • Why 20/20 vision does not necessarily mean your eyes are functioning optimally • What retinal blood vessels may tell us about vascular health • The connection between the eye, optic nerve and brain • Emerging research into retinal imaging, OCT, AI and neurological health • The extraordinary case of an asymptomatic patient whose routine eye examination detected a choroidal melanoma • Blood pressure and systemic changes that can sometimes first become apparent during eye care • Mitochondrial function, oxidative stress, nutrition and eye health • Cataracts, macular health and protecting the eyes from UV exposure • Why visual function can have such a profound effect on learning • What parents need to understand about children's eye examinations • Why a child can pass a standard vision screening and still have a visual-function problem • Near work, screens and the increasing prevalence of myopia • Screen-related eye strain, dry eyes and why our blink rate matters • Workplace ergonomics and the relationship between vision, posture, headaches and neck strain • What happens to our eyes as we enter our forties, fifties and beyond • Presbyopia, dry eye, cataract development and glaucoma risk • Why preventative eye examinations may represent an underused opportunity for earlier intervention • The challenges created when healthcare becomes focused on treating symptoms rather than looking at the whole person • Don's work with Vision Care Direct and his approach to making preventative eye care more accessible One of the most important messages from this conversation is incredibly simple: Seeing well does not necessarily mean there is nothing to see. Your eyesight can feel completely normal while changes are occurring within the eye — which is exactly why preventative eye care matters. Sound, Frequency & Staying Human in a Digital World | Tenille Bentley

Sound, Frequency & Staying Human in a Digital World | Tenille Bentley What happens to our emotional intelligence, nervous systems and human connection as technology becomes an increasingly dominant part of our lives? And where might something as ancient and fundamental as sound fit into the future of human wellbeing? In this episode, Jodi speaks with Tenille Bentley — an award-winning entrepreneur, educator, sound therapist, author and international speaker whose work spans emotional intelligence, education, leadership, therapeutic sound and human potential. Tenille is the founder of ELMA Education, the Emotional Literacy and Mindfulness Academy, and founder and Creative Director of the internationally recognised En Coda 432Hz Orchestra. She is also co-creator and executive producer of the award-winning documentary Does Sound Heal? Jodi and Tenille have known each other for many years, making this a particularly personal and wide-ranging conversation about the threads that have connected Tenille’s work over more than a decade. They explore: • Why emotional intelligence may become even more important in the age of AI • Children, technology, attention and the loss of face-to-face connection • Building self-awareness around our own relationship with phones and digital technology • Why moments of silence, observation and wonder still matter • Nervous-system regulation and our perception of safety • Tenille’s journey from technology and business into emotional intelligence and therapeutic sound • Why music can access emotion and memory in ways language sometimes cannot • Deep listening as a way of returning attention to the present moment • Tenille’s work with 432 Hz tuning and the En Coda Orchestra • The complexities of studying something as subjective as our response to music • QEEG, heart-rate variability and physiological measurement during sound experiences • Sound, trauma and the importance of individual nervous-system responses • Music, creativity and flow states • The award-winning documentary Does Sound Heal? • The Institute of Sound & Frequency and Tenille’s sound therapy training • Tenille’s next chapter, including her work to make frequency-based music more accessible in everyday life Underlying the entire conversation is a bigger question: as our world becomes more technologically sophisticated, how do we make sure we don’t lose the human capacities that technology cannot replace — presence, awareness, empathy, connection, creativity and wonder? The Future of Medicinal Cannabis: Trials, Access and What Comes Next with Matt Shales

Medicinal cannabis has moved rapidly from the fringes of healthcare into clinical practice — but research, practitioner education, regulation and public understanding are still trying to catch up. In this second conversation with Matt Shales, Founder and CEO of MediCann Health and MediCann Clinics, Jodi Duval goes deeper into the future of cannabinoid medicine in Australia. Following their first episode exploring cannabis from seed to patient, this conversation examines what happens next: how clinicians learn to prescribe medicinal cannabis, why standardised education remains challenging, how products are developed and kept consistent, and why clinical research will ultimately determine how widely cannabinoid therapies are integrated into mainstream medicine. Matt shares insights from MediCann’s involvement in emerging research across areas including endometriosis, concussion and pain, while Jodi explores the broader role of the endocannabinoid system in maintaining homeostasis and why the effects of cannabinoid medicine can be far more nuanced than simply “feeling” a medication working. They also discuss access and affordability, the possibility of pharmacy-accessible CBD, the pathway towards registered medicines and PBS subsidy, the extraordinary amount of cannabis currently lost through production and regulation, and the potential of hemp well beyond medicine. In this episode: • Why there is still no single standardised pathway for medicinal cannabis prescriber education • Why “cannabis” cannot be treated as one uniform medicine • The importance of cannabinoids, terpenes, formulation and delivery method • Emerging research involving CBD and endometriosis • Cannabinoid research in concussion and pain • Why clinical trials are critical for the next stage of the industry • The enormous challenge of creating consistent plant-based medicines • Product quality, reliability and continuity for patients • Why CBD can produce subtle rather than immediately noticeable effects • The endocannabinoid system, anandamide, 2-AG and homeostasis • The potential role of lesser-known cannabinoids such as CBG • The pathway towards over-the-counter pharmacy CBD in Australia • Whether medicinal cannabis could eventually receive PBS subsidy • Cannabis production, wastage and regulatory barriers • Hemp, sustainability, biofuels and regeneration of degraded land • Medical versus regulated adult-use cannabis • Where Matt believes cannabinoid medicine may have its greatest future impact This is a fascinating look at a medicine, an industry and a research field that are all evolving at the same time. Your Skin Is Talking: Skin Barrier, Peptides, Fragrance & the Exposome | Mukti

What if skincare wasn’t just about what you see on the outside? Our skin changes throughout our lives — through pregnancy, hormonal shifts, perimenopause, menopause and ageing — but it is also continually interacting with the environment around us. In this episode of the Revital Health Podcast, I’m joined by Mukti, founder of Mukti Organics, an Australian certified organic skincare brand established in 2000. Mukti has a background spanning complementary medicine, skin therapy and cosmetic formulation, and has spent more than 25 years questioning what we put on our skin and how skincare can evolve alongside the science. We explore the intersection between skin physiology, hormones, beauty and the exposome, including: Why our skin changes alongside hormonal shiftsPregnancy, perimenopause, menopause and ageing skinThe rise in skin-barrier disruption and sensitivityWhy Mukti is now simplifying many of her formulationsFragrance and the wider conversation around endocrine-disrupting exposuresWhat to consider with PFAS and long-wear cosmeticsHow to start reading an ingredient labelPeptides, collagen and skin longevityTopical versus internal approaches to supporting skinWhy formulation and delivery matter as much as the “hero ingredient”Greenwashing and what terms like natural, organic and clean actually tell usWhy certified organic is different from simply putting “organic” on a labelMukti’s simplest non-negotiables for supporting the skinWhy sometimes less really is more Mukti also shares the philosophy behind her book Truth in Beauty, her ongoing research into skin physiology and why she believes protecting the skin barrier is becoming increasingly important. This conversation is ultimately about becoming more informed — not frightened — about the products we use every day, and remembering that healthy skin is part of a much bigger biological picture. Red Light Therapy Beyond the Hype: Pain, Recovery and Women’s Health with Matt Camenzuli

Red light therapy has rapidly become one of the most talked-about technologies in health and recovery, but what is it actually doing inside the body, and how do we separate evidence-based therapy from clever marketing? In this episode of the Revital Health Podcast, I speak with Matt Camenzuli, physiotherapist and Fringe Education Director. After more than a decade working across musculoskeletal, sports, disability and aged-care settings, Matt began noticing the same pattern in clinic. People living with pain and inflammation wanted accessible options that could complement their treatment, support recovery and be used consistently at home. This clinical gap led Matt into the world of red and near-infrared light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation. Matt explains the science in an easy-to-understand way, including how specific wavelengths of light interact with the mitochondria, support cellular energy production and influence circulation, oxidative stress, inflammation and tissue recovery. We discuss: • What photobiomodulation is and how it works • The difference between red light, near-infrared light, blue light, lasers and ultraviolet light • Why red-light therapy is not simply a new health trend • How light may support pain management, injury recovery and physical performance • Why stronger devices and higher intensity are not necessarily better • The importance of wavelength, dose, distance and treatment duration • What to consider when choosing an at-home red-light device • Emerging applications in concussion, neurological health and cognitive function • Why women’s pelvic pain continues to be underdiagnosed and undertreated • The emerging role of red-light technology in pelvic and women’s health • How red-light therapy may become more widely integrated into physiotherapy, allied health and mainstream clinical care Matt also shares the process of creating Fringe’s range of accessible, home-based red-light devices and why safety, regulatory compliance, ease of use and practitioner education have remained central to the company’s development. This is a practical and informative conversation for anyone curious about red-light therapy, whether you are living with pain, supporting recovery, exploring women’s health options or simply trying to understand what makes one device different from another. In Rhythm: How Light Shapes Sleep, Skin, Metabolism and Health with Daniel White and Jai Kapoor

What if improving your sleep, mood, energy and metabolic health began not with another supplement, but with changing the light around you? In this episode of The Revital Health Podcast, Jodi Duval is joined by Daniel White and Jai Kapoor, co-founders of In Rhythm, to explore the emerging science of chronobiology and the profound relationship between light, our environment and human health. Daniel is a Registered Nutritionist, Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach and Applied Quantum Biology Certified Health Practitioner, with extensive research and clinical experience in sleep science, circadian biology and human behaviour change. Jai brings a very different but complementary perspective from his career as a senior executive within the artificial intelligence and technology sectors. He has helped build and scale several high-growth technology companies from their early stages, including Wayve AI and Revolut. Daniel and Jai both arrived at this work through deeply personal health experiences. Daniel describes experiencing significant circadian disruption during adolescence after years of late-night screen use, technology addiction, poor sleep, weight gain, anxiety and declining mental health. His search for answers led him into nutrition, psychology, functional medicine, circadian biology and photobiology. Jai’s demanding career in artificial intelligence, finance and technology involved long working hours, chronic pressure and a highly stimulating lifestyle. After suddenly developing severe psoriasis, he explored a range of conventional and holistic approaches with limited success. It was only after changing his relationship with natural and artificial light that he began to experience significant improvements in his skin, sleep and wider health. This experience became the catalyst for his work with Daniel and the creation of In Rhythm. Together, Jodi, Daniel and Jai explore why light is one of the body’s most important environmental time signals and why modern life can create such a significant mismatch between our biology and our surroundings. In this conversation, they discuss: • Why circadian health involves much more than sleep • How light helps regulate the body’s internal clocks • Why bright, blue-enriched artificial light can keep the body in a perpetual “midday” state • The potential effects of invisible light flicker on the brain and nervous system • Why infrared light is an important component of natural light • How indoor lighting may affect sleep, mood, energy and cellular repair • Why children can be particularly sensitive to evening light • The relationship between screen exposure, melatonin, sleep and behaviour • Practical ways to improve a child’s evening light environment • Morning light, UVA, UVB and gradually developing tolerance to sunlight • Skin health, psoriasis and the timing of light exposure • Why sunlight should be approached with respect rather than fear • How eating earlier can support circadian and metabolic alignment • Habit stacking light exposure, outdoor meals, movement and grounding • In Rhythm’s LIGHTER framework for circadian health • The Better Sleep Bulb and the limitations of conventional indoor LEDs • The future of biologically coherent homes, schools, workplaces and healthcare environments The LIGHTER framework includes: L — Light first thing in the morning Get outside as early as practical and allow natural morning light to reach the eyes and skin. I — Include UVA Gradually include appropriate natural light exposure as UVA becomes available during the day. G — Gather UVB When appropriate for your skin type, location and UV conditions, obtain measured UVB exposure without allowing the skin to burn. H — Harness evening light Use the natural light at the end of the day to help communicate to the body that daytime is finishing. T — Turn off artificial light at night Reduce bright overhead lighting, blue-enriched lighting and unfiltered screens during the evening. E — Earth or ground Spend time barefoot on natural surfaces or in natural water where safe and practical. R — Regular early meal timings Maintain consistent meal timing and aim to finish the final meal several hours before sleep. This conversation offers a powerful reminder that health does not always need to be forced. When the appropriate environmental conditions are restored, the body may be better able to regulate, repair and return to rhythm. Why Hormones Are Not Just a Numbers Game with Dr Nayan Patel

In this episode of The Revital Health Podcast, Jodi Duval sits down with Dr Nayan Patel, clinical pharmacist, founder of Auro Wellness, and author of The Glutathione Revolution, for a deep conversation on hormone health, personalised medicine, glutathione and cellular resilience. Hormone health is one of the most talked-about topics in health right now, but also one of the most misunderstood. With so much information circulating around HRT, menopause, testosterone, progesterone, oestrogen, peptides and “optimal ranges”, it can be difficult to know what is genuinely useful and what is simply noise. Dr Patel brings a pharmacist’s precision to the conversation, explaining why hormone therapy should never be treated as a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead of chasing numbers alone, he encourages a more outcome-focused approach that considers symptoms, physiology, lifestyle, stress, insulin, thyroid function, hormone metabolism and long-term health goals. In this episode, we explore: Why hormone health is not just about replacing what is “low”The problem with chasing ideal numbers without considering outcomesWhy progesterone can be such an important balancing hormoneThe role of cortisol, insulin and thyroid in the hormone pictureWhy men and women need different hormone conversationsThe risks of using hormones or peptides without changing lifestyle foundationsWhy oxidative stress matters for hormones, ageing and repairWhat glutathione does in the bodyHow glutathione supports antioxidant defence and conjugation pathwaysWhy delivery of glutathione is so challengingDr Patel’s work with topical glutathione delivery technologyWhy “more” is not always better when it comes to antioxidant supportHow food, sleep, stress, water and environmental load influence cellular health This episode is a reminder that true health optimisation is not about outsourcing your health to a single product, prescription or test result. It is about understanding the body’s signals, reducing the noise, and supporting the foundations that allow the body to do what it is designed to do.
