    The Exorcist (1973)

We’re continuing spooky season with a review of ‘The Exorcist’ in an all new episode of Cinephomaniacs! 12-year-old Regan is possessed by a demon in this iconic 1973 horror film. Desperate to save her, Regan’s mother seeks the help of two Catholic priests. The showdown between good and evil is one of most thrilling, and referenced, finales you’ll see. ‘The Exorcist’ was the highest grossing film of 1973 and became the first horror movie nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair, and Jason Miller were all nominated for their performances. It’s available to stream on HBO Max and rent or borrow anywhere else. Peyton and Andrew discuss the film’s theme of faith vs. science, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and the struggle of a mother to help her daughter that makes the film so gripping, even today. This episode also includes a mini-review of ‘V/H/S/Mixtape’, a reaction to the disappointing first trailer for Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’, and a discussion about Steven Soderbergh stepping in to help Matt Reeves finish ‘The Batman: Part II’. We compel you to listen to the newest episode wherever you get your podcasts. Possession (1981)

It’s officially spooky season, and Cinephomaniacs is starting it with a bang! Peyton and Andrew review Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 cult classic ‘Possession’. Sam Neill (RIP) and Isabelle Adjani play Mark and Anna, a couple living in West Berlin whose marriage is rapidly falling apart. When Anna asks for a divorce and begins exhibiting increasingly strange behavior, Mark suspects she’s seeing another man, but the reality is something beyond his wildest nightmares. ‘Possession’ premiered at the 1981 Cannes Film Festival, where Adjani won the award for Best Actress. Żuławski wrote the film during his own painful divorce. The result is a bizarre mix of drama, horror, action, and sci-fi. The film was banned and censored for years, but you can now watch it from the comfort of your living room. ‘Possession’ is available on Shudder and for free with a public library card on Hoopla and Kanopy. This episode also features discussion of ‘Masters of the Universe’ (2026) and Curry Barker’s ‘Obsession’ followup, ‘Anything but Ghosts’ (2027). Resident Evil (2026) feat. Kyle Flynn

Andrew and Peyton are joined by their friend and fellow film critic Kyle Flynn to review ‘Resident Evil’ in an all new episode of Cinephomaniacs. In the latest movie from Zach Cregger (‘Barbarian’, ‘Weapons’), Austin Abrams plays a hapless organ transport driver unknowingly caught in the first night of a zombie apocalypse.  None of our hosts had ever seen a ‘Resident Evil’ movie before, and they brought a mix of reactions to the newest one. Is it a fun horror comedy that recreates the feeling of playing the game or a dull affair that just feels like holding a dead controller? The discussion also includes reactions to the Palme d’Or winner ‘Fjord’, the upcoming Chris Evans Hollywood satire ‘Sacrifice’, and the right wing Jonathan Majors action film ‘Run Hide Fight: Infidels’. Onslaught

Peyton and Andrew review ‘Onslaught’, an action thriller in theaters now. ‘Onslaught’ has been one of their most anticipated movies of the year, and they were ecstatic when A24 invited them to a press screening earlier this month. Adria Arjona (‘Don’t Blink’) stars as a veteran managing a trailer park whose daughter is staying with her for the weekend. When a trio of super soldiers escape a nearby military base and begin killing everything in their path, they soon find they messed with the wrong mom. Dan Stevens (‘Cuckoo’) also stars as the Nazi scientist behind the experiment, and Drew Starkey (‘Outer Banks’) as the government agent trying to cover it up. Adam Wingard (‘The Guest’) directs, returning to horror after directing ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ and ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’. They get into all things ‘Onslaught’, from funny acting choices to some stomach-turning gore. Along the way, we touch on the big Telluride news of Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s Elizabeth Holmes documentary, ‘You Can See Everything’, and Luca Guadagnino’s OpenAI biopic, ‘Artificial’. The Iron Giant (1999)

Mmm boy! We mark Andrew’s 30th birthday with a discussion about one of his lifelong favorites, ‘The Iron Giant’! Set in 1950’s Maine, the animated classic follows a precocious and lonely young boy named Hogarth, who desperately wants to make a friend. He soon gets what he wished for in the form of the Giant, a 100-foot-tall metal man. Training a Giant doesn’t prove easy, especially in a Cold War America that sees him only as a threat. The Giant faces a choice: will he be the hero, or the villain the world already sees him as? The movie leaves us with the inspiring message, “You are who you choose to be.” ‘The Iron Giant’ originated as ‘The Iron Man’, a series of bedtime stories told by Ted Hughes to his children. Brad Bird (‘The Incredibles’, ‘Ratatouille’) directed the film adaptation, which was released in 1999. Though it was originally a box office failure, ‘The Iron Giant’ has steadily increased in cult classic status, and it’s now consistently ranked as one of the greatest animated movies of all time. Listen to hear our thoughts on the movie, including commentary about its origins and the meaning it holds for Andrew. Plus, we review the new releases ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ and ‘Onslaught’. Teenage WHAT at Camp Miasma?

Rise and shine, campers, for an all new episode of Cinephomaniacs! Andrew and Peyton review ‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’, a new film from Jane Schoenbrun that hit them like a spear through the chest. Hannah Einbinder (‘Hacks’) stars as Kris, a queer horror director tasked with rebooting a classic slasher franchise. Kris meets Billy (Gillian Anderson, ‘The X-Files’), the star of the original Camp Miasma film, leading her on a fantastical journey of sexual discovery that blurs the line between reality and the film franchise she fell in love with. We discuss the film’s genre-bending narrative, the hand-crafted feel of the production design, and the personal story that ‘We’re All Going to the World’s Fair’, ‘I Saw the TV Glow’, and ‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’ tell about Jane Schoenbrun's gender identity and sexuality. In movie news, Marvel has chosen their new ‘X-Men’, and Criterion will release Paul Thomas Anderson’s Cameron Winter concert film in theaters this November. Out now, a group of kids find themselves trapped in a children’s show with an orange unicorn in ‘Buddy’ from Casper Kelly (‘Too Many Cooks’). Also, Macon Blair (‘The Toxic Avenger’) directs ‘Idiots’, a black comedy road movie starring Dave Franco, O’Shea Jackson Jr., and Mason Thames.
