    Episode 12 - Mark Barrett

Send us Fan Mail Episode 15 – Mark Barrett | Dog Days, Wobbly Boots & Shorty PantsDog Days is one of those Lake of the Ozarks names that feels like it’s always been here—but the real story behind it is a whole lot scrappier, crazier, and funnier than you might expect. On Episode 15 of the Swift Tea Podcast, we’re sitting down with Mark Barrett of Barrett Restaurant Group to hear how a kid from southern Iowa turned an internship at Tan-Tar-A into more than three decades of building some of the most recognizable restaurants, bars, and events at Lake of the Ozarks. Mark takes us back to the beginning—moving to the Lake, deciding he wasn’t leaving, finding a foreclosed waterfront property, bringing together a group of early investors, and putting in enough sweat equity to turn that property into Dog Days Bar & Grill. There was no playbook, and the learning curve of running a seasonal waterfront restaurant got real FAST. From there, we get into the stories behind Dog Days, Wobbly Boots Roadhouse BBQ, and Shorty Pants Lounge and what Mark has learned about building brands that people remember. We talk about why the right name matters, how merchandise can turn customers into walking billboards, and how Wobbly Boots built the systems and team needed to deliver the same experience year after year. Then we get into the events that helped shape Lake of the Ozarks summer culture. 🍹☀️ Mark takes us behind the scenes of the White Party, Aquapalooza, the raft races, and the Canine Cannonball, including how some of these events started, how they evolved, and how a pool at Dog Days helped change the daytime party scene at the Lake. And, of course, we’re talking about the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout. 🏁🚤 Dog Days has become one of the major hubs for Shootout week, and Mark breaks down what they learned from previous years and what’s changing this year. We talk docks, shuttles, vendor space, DJs, live bands, crowds, and how you build a party around some of the fastest boats in the world without taking away from what everyone came to see—the racing. Then there are the stories that could ONLY happen at the Lake. We get into legendary Big L moments, Key West adventures, the infamous gum-in-the-ears story 😂, celebrity drop-ins, and what it was like booking performers before some of them became household names. Mark also takes us inside the side of the restaurant business customers rarely see. What does it take to staff and operate multiple high-volume Lake restaurants during the busiest weeks of summer? How do you create consistency when thousands of people can walk through your doors? And what happens when Mother Nature decides to throw the whole plan out the window? That brings us to the Fourth of July storm. ⛈️ Mark shares what happened when a brutal storm knocked out power on one of the biggest days of the entire season and what decades in the hospitality business have taught him about preparing for the one thing nobody at the Lake can control—the weather. From a foreclosed waterfront property to 33 years in the Lake hospitality business, this episode is packed with Lake history, entrepreneurship, restaurant stories, legendary parties, Shootout memories, and a behind-the-scenes look at the people and places that helped make Lake of the Ozarks what it is today. If you love Dog Days, Wobbly Boots, Shorty Pants, the Shootout, Lake of the Ozarks history, restaurant and bar stories, or hearing how successful businesses actually get built, you won’t want to miss this one. 👇 What’s your favorite Dog Days memory? You can buy tickets IN PERSON directly from the Ozarks Amphitheater box office and save on the online fees! What does it actually take to bring some of the biggest names in music and entertainment to the Lake of the Ozarks? For Episode 14 of the Swiftea Podcast, we’re going backstage at Ozarks Amphitheater with Mary Kay Von Brendel and Dallas Hall to find out what really happens before the gates open, the lights go down, and thousands of people pack into one of the Lake’s biggest entertainment venues. From booking artists and negotiating tour schedules to thunderstorms, crazy riders, pyrotechnics, packed parking lots, and everything that can go wrong on show day—this one gives you a look behind the curtain that most concertgoers never get to see. We dive into the history of Ozarks Amphitheater, how the venue was brought back to life, the upgrades needed to meet modern industry standards, and what it takes to keep attracting major touring acts to Lake of the Ozarks year after year. Then we get into one of the biggest challenges of running an outdoor venue: Missouri weather. ⛈️ Mary Kay and Dallas explain how weather decisions are actually made, what happens when lightning gets too close, where thousands of concertgoers are supposed to go during a delay, and the balancing act between keeping everyone safe and still trying to make sure the show goes on. Ever wonder how they decide who plays at Ozarks Amphitheater? We talk about booking talent, watching artist tour routes, finding opportunities when major acts are already traveling through the Midwest, and how the requests fans make on social media can actually help influence who the venue tries to bring to the Lake. And then there are the tour riders. 😂 We get into the behind-the-scenes requests artists make when they come to town, the gifts the Amphitheater puts together for performers, and some of the things artists have requested that the venue simply wasn't willing to make happen. We also talk about what YOU guys try sneaking through the gates. 👀 From items that get confiscated every single show to the things people somehow think security won't notice, working the entrance at a major concert apparently comes with plenty of entertainment of its own. Then there's everything happening on stage that most of us take for granted—pyrotechnics 🔥, CO2, confetti, massive production setups, merchandise, concessions, food, security, parking, and more than 200 people working behind the scenes to pull off a single night of entertainment. Mary Kay and Dallas also take us back to the COVID era and what it was like trying to operate a live entertainment venue when the entire concert industry basically stopped. We talk about the strict testing requirements some touring acts demanded and just how different those shows looked behind the scenes. And concerts aren't the only thing coming through Ozarks Amphitheater. We get into comedy shows, why they can be completely different from concerts, the strict rules some comedians have surrounding cell phones and recording, and what it takes to manage a crowd when thousands of people suddenly aren't allowed to have their phones out. 📵😂 From dream bookings and venue capacity to weight limits, parking, concessions, artist requests, weather emergencies, production challenges, and the absolute chaos that comes with putting thousands of people in one place, this episode will make you look at your next concert completely differently. The next time you're sitting at Ozarks Amphitheater watching one of your favorite artists, remember: the show you see on stage is only a fraction of what's happening behind the scenes. 🎤 What's your DREAM artist or band you'd love to see play Ozarks Amphitheater? Drop it in the comments! 👇 And don't forget—if you're heading to the comedy show this Saturday night, grab your tickets and come out for a night at the Amphitheater! 🎟️ BUY ONLINE: [TICKET LINK] 🌊 Follow Swift & Co Realty for more unfiltered tea from the Lake of the Ozarks! 📍 Powered by Swift & Co Realty 🌐 www.swiftandcorealty.com Follow us on social: 😎 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/swiftandcorealty/ 📸 Instagram: @swift_and_co_realty 🎥 TikTok: @SwifTeaReal 🏡 Thinking about buying or selling at the Lake of the Ozarks? Episode 13 - Shelly Flippo

Send us Fan Mail If you’ve spent any time at Lake of the Ozarks, chances are you’ve heard the name Shelly Flippo—and if you’ve ever been “Flippo’d,” you already know exactly what you’re getting into. On Episode 13 of the Swift Tea Podcast, we sit down with one of the Lake’s most unforgettable personalities for a conversation that goes everywhere—and we mean everywhere. From growing up on a pig farm in Central Illinois and earning the crown as a Pork Queen, to landing at Lake of the Ozarks, falling in love with John Flippo, and becoming part of the fabric of the Lake community, Shelly’s story is anything but ordinary. We go back to the early days of Kirkwood Lodge, where John’s father, legendary square dance caller Marshall Flippo, entertained generations of families from across the country. Shelly takes us through meeting John over Memorial Day weekend in 1997, falling in love with him and the Lake, and eventually becoming part of an era of Lake nightlife that locals still talk about today. Then we get into the Blue Room years—11 years behind one of the hottest nightlife spots at the Lake, complete with stand-up comedians, packed winter nights, celebrity encounters, questionable drink names, and enough stories to fill another dozen episodes. Shelly talks about meeting comedians like Nikki Glaser and the unforgettable characters who came through the doors during one of the Lake’s most legendary nightlife eras. We also dive into how Shelly transitioned from nightlife into entrepreneurship and created FlipBack Resale, the premium consignment store she’s operated for more than a decade. She shares how relationships built during her bar days helped launch the business, why she believed Lake of the Ozarks needed a higher-end resale shop, and some absolutely WILD stories about what happens when you own a retail store. Of course, you can’t have Shelly on without talking about the legendary Pink Party. What started in 2019 has turned into an annual Lake tradition filled with pink, tequila, live music, friends, and exactly the kind of chaos you’d expect when Shelly Flippo throws a birthday party. This year, Pocket Aces are bringing the music, and Milagro Tequila is helping fuel the celebration. But this episode isn’t all partying. Shelly gets candid about getting older while refusing to slow down, hormone replacement therapy, testosterone, brain fog, fitness, Pilates, and what she’s learned about taking care of yourself while still enjoying life. And then there are the stories you simply have to hear for yourself: getting arrested her first night living in New Orleans, surviving the experience by telling jokes, wild trips with friends, lost-phone missions, celebrity encounters, Saturday Night Live after-parties, broken feet, tequila, and decades of Lake of the Ozarks memories. Through all the insanity, one thing becomes obvious: Shelly genuinely loves the people around her, the Lake of the Ozarks, and the life she and John have built here. Near the end of the episode, we hear one of the best descriptions of their relationship: John once said he could find his dad by listening for people laughing—and now, that’s how he finds Shelly. This episode is Lake of the Ozarks history, nightlife, entrepreneurship, friendship, tequila, and absolute chaos rolled into one. Grab a drink, turn it up, and get ready for a flippin’ good time with Shelly Flippo on Episode 13 of the Swift Tea Podcast. 🌊 Follow Swift & Co Realty for more unfiltered tea from the Lake of the Ozarks! 📍 Powered by Swift & Co Realty 🌐 www.swiftandcorealty.com Follow us on social: 😎 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/swiftandcorealty/ 📸 Instagram: @swift_and_co_realty 🎥 TikTok: @SwifTeaReal Thinking about buying or selling at the Lake of the Ozarks?
