Seljuks vs. Mamluks: Mastering the AP World History Compare & Contrast LEQ

How do you turn historical facts into a high-scoring AP World History LEQ? In this longer than normal episode of AP World History in 15, Mr. Bruns breaks down one of the most important essay skills on the AP exam: Compare and Contrast! Using the Seljuk Empire and the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt, we'll explore how new Islamic political powers emerged as Abbasid authority declined and how these states built, justified, and maintained political control. In this episode, you'll learn how to: Understand the LEQ prompt: Break down “To what degree?” and identify what state formation really means. Write a strong thesis: Develop a defensible argument that evaluates similarities and differences. Compare military power: Examine how Seljuk rulers and Mamluk military elites established political authority. Explain religious legitimacy: Explore the Seljuks' relationship with the Abbasid caliphs in Baghdad and the Mamluks' establishment of a symbolic Abbasid caliphate in Cairo. Use specific historical evidence: Analyze Tughril Beg's capture of Baghdad (1055), Nizam al-Mulk, the Battle of Ayn Jalut (1260), and the Cairo caliphate (1261). Build stronger body paragraphs: Connect evidence to claims instead of simply listing historical facts. The Big Takeaway: Both states relied on military power, Sunni Islamic legitimacy, and established administrative traditions, but they developed different political structures and systems of leadership. Whether you're preparing for an AP World History LEQ, reviewing state formation, or strengthening your historical reasoning, this episode will help you move from memorizing facts to building a convincing historical argument.
