Escaping Narcissistic Abuse | Elevate Within Roundtable

Every Friday, host Sandy Davis and co-host Claudia Cuevas, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, sit down for the Architecture of Reinvention Roundtable to go deeper into the themes from that week's guest conversation. This week, following Jennifer Jayne's episode, Sandy and Claudia unpack why some of the very traits that make women high achievers, strategic thinking, self-sufficiency, and the instinct to solve problems, can also make them targets for narcissistic and manipulative partners. Jennifer, founder of the Fempreneur Collective, described her own experience as death by a thousand paper cuts, and that phrase becomes the throughline for a conversation about red flags, healthy relationships, and the guilt that keeps high-achieving women stuck longer than they should be. Claudia offers a simple diagnostic question for spotting an unhealthy relationship, or job, before it costs years: does something feel off, and is my first instinct to fix myself, or to ask whether the relationship itself is the problem. They also talk about the specific tactic manipulators use to isolate their partners, and why leaving a marriage, even a bad one, can feel like a personal failure for women who are successful everywhere else. What You Will Hear in This Episode Why strategic, self-sufficient, high-achieving women are targets for manipulators, not just resilient against them. Death by a thousand paper cuts, Jennifer's own words for the slow erosion of narcissistic abuse. The difference between a healthy relationship and an unhealthy one, in one simple question. Why compartmentalizing emotion at work gets used against women at home. Claudia's diagnostic question for telling whether the problem is you or the relationship. How manipulators deliberately isolate you from the friends who would call it out. Why leaving after twenty or twenty five years can feel like failure, and why it is not. ⭐ If this resonated, please leave a rating or review, it helps reach more women who need this conversation.  🎙️ ABOUT ELEVATE WITHIN Elevate Within is a podcast and community for high-achieving women navigating the messy middle — the space between who you were and who you're becoming. 🎧 SUBSCRIBE & NEVER MISS AN EPISODE  🎵 Spotify: Elevate Within with Sandy Davis 🍎 Apple Podcasts: Elevate Within with Sandy Davis  ▶️ YouTube: Elevate Within Always  📻 Amazon Music: Elevate Within with Sandy Davis 📻 iHeart Radio: Elevate Within with Sandy Davis 📖 Substack: https://substack.com/@elevatewithin ⭐ APPLE PODCAST LISTENERS If this resonated with you, a rating or review would mean everything. Leaving Narcissistic Abuse & Rebuilding | Jennifer Jayne

Jennifer Jayne spent a decade in a narcissistic marriage before she escaped and what that escape looked like is not what most people imagine.  It started with a locked bedroom on her birthday. A phone call to her mom in Canada. Four words: I’m coming home. And then a weeks-long logistical operation, a secret office, a personal assistant running bags to storage, a relay of friends driving her from Texas to the Canadian border, and a 3AM confrontation where she finally said out loud what she’d known for years.  In this episode of Elevate Within’s Architecture of Reinvention: The Art of Unbecoming, Jennifer joins Sandy Davis to talk about what narcissistic abuse looks like when it’s quiet and invisible the death by a thousand cuts that high-achieving women often don’t name until it’s almost too late. She was running a six-figure business, appearing to thrive, and completely controlled from the inside.  Jennifer is now the founder of the Fempreneur Collective, creator of the Flourish Circles mastermind, and the woman behind She Owns the Feed on Skool. She built a community of thousands from a pandemic basement in Canada by doing 90 coffee chats in 30 days. And she has a philosophy that is changing how women approach their work: done is data. We cannot learn from, make money from, or grow from what we never complete.  What You Will Hear in This Episode  What narcissistic abuse looks like when it is quiet, slow, and invisible from the outside. How Jennifer planned and executed her escape during the COVID pandemic with a secret office and a relay of friends. The 3AM confrontation and the moment she said out loud that she was leaving. What she built from a pandemic basement in Canada and why community is one of the most underrated healing tools we have. The done is data philosophy and what it means for women who struggle to finish what they start. Why to be a generous giver, you first have to learn to be a generous receiver. Her message to every woman sitting in her own locked bedroom right now. Survival Is Just an Attitude | Elevate Within Roundtable

Every Friday, host Sandy Davis and co-host Claudia Cuevas, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, sit down for the Architecture of Reinvention Roundtable to go deeper into the themes from that week's guest conversation. This week, following Deb Boulanger's episode, Sandy and Claudia trace where limiting beliefs about self-worth actually come from, tracing them back past the corporate paycheck to childhood, to a critical parent or a teacher's gold star, and the moment approval first became something to be earned rather than given. Claudia breaks down the difference between having self-worth and earning it, and introduces a simple technique she uses with high-achieving clients: trading affirmations for positive questions, always anchored in today. Sandy tests it live on air, and the result is the kind of on-air realization listeners will recognize in themselves. They also talk through the moving-goalpost trap, why hitting a financial or career milestone so rarely feels like enough, and why journaling feels impossible until you shrink the page down to two lines. Deb Boulanger is the founder and CEO of Life After Corporate, a business mentorship company helping women make the identity shift from corporate leader to entrepreneur. What You Will Hear in This Episode The difference between having self-worth and earning it, and why the distinction matters. How childhood systems, a critical parent or a teacher's gold star, wire our need for validation. The journal prompt that stops high achievers cold: who am I beyond what I produce? Why affirmations often backfire, and the positive-question reframe that works instead. Why anxiety lives in the future and depression lives in the past, and how to train your brain to stay in today. The moving-goalpost trap, and why celebrating a win does not mean losing ambition. Leaving Corporate & Reinventing Yourself | Deb Boulanger

What do you do when the career you spent 25 years building no longer feels like yours? Deb Boulanger knows that question from the inside. She rose to run a full business unit two levels below the CEO at Gartner and beyond and then she walked away. Not because she failed. Because she had outgrown the life she built. What followed was a collision of divorce, burnout, perimenopause, and a silent 10-day Buddhist meditation retreat that changed everything.  In this episode of Elevate Within’s Architecture of Reinvention: The Art of Unbecoming summer series, Deb joins Sandy Davis for an honest conversation about the grief that hits when you leave corporate, the identity crisis no one warns you about, and the practical tools she now teaches the women she mentors. Deb is the CEO of Life After Corporate, host of a 250+ episode podcast for women in transition, and a business mentor helping women build companies that actually fit who they are becoming not who they used to be.  What You Will Hear in This Episode  Why leaving corporate is an identity transition, not just a career transition and why the grief is real. How a 10-day silent meditation retreat became the turning point that changed Deb’s direction entirely. Why pushing corporate experience forward in corporate language doesn’t land with new clients. The truth about pricing struggles: they are almost always self-worth struggles in disguise. Her core entrepreneurship framework: find the demand before you build the supply, test before you invest. What she means when she says survival is just an attitude and the question she asks every woman on the edge. Five Women, One Story: A Summer Series Interlude | Elevate Within

Burnout does not discriminate. It does not care who you are, where you come from, or how much you have. In this Elevate Within summer series interlude, host Sandy Davis and co-host Claudia Cuevas, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, pause before the second half of the Architecture of Reinvention season to reflect on what they have learned so far. Joining them is Taina Galarza, a Licensed Master Social Worker and Sandy's best friend, who has spent the summer listening to the series the same way you have. Taina shares what surprised her most across the first five episodes, from Jenny Catalano's honesty about skin picking to Maiko Sakai's reckoning with patriarchy across cultures, and reflects on healing as integration rather than erasure. Sandy and Claudia dig into why burnout looks identical in a corporate executive and in a mother working multiple jobs, why women vet a therapist more carefully than a partner, and why just over half of the show's YouTube audience is men. Sandy also shares, for the first time on the show, the story of losing both of her parents within weeks of each other and returning to work almost immediately after. What You Will Hear in This Episode Why Sandy calls this episode a summer series interlude. How Taina Galarza's outside perspective as a listener reframed the first five episodes. The unplanned throughline Sandy and Claudia discovered across five very different women's stories. Why burnout does not discriminate by income, title, or background. Sandy's metaphor of a foundation turning to sinking sand when you stop checking in with yourself. Why just over half of the show's audience on YouTube is men. A preview of the modalities coming in the second half of the season: EMDR, somatic work, breathwork, and nervous system regulation. Sandy's personal story of losing both parents within weeks of each other while working in corporate America. ⭐ If this resonated, please leave a rating or review, it helps reach more women who need this conversation. 🎙️ ABOUT ELEVATE WITHIN Elevate Within is a podcast and community for high-achieving women navigating the messy middle — the space between who you were and who you're becoming. 🎧 SUBSCRIBE & NEVER MISS AN EPISODE  🎵 Spotify: Elevate Within with Sandy Davis 🍎 Apple Podcasts: Elevate Within with Sandy Davis  ▶️ YouTube: Elevate Within Always  📻 Amazon Music: Elevate Within with Sandy Davis 📻 iHeart Radio: Elevate Within with Sandy Davis 📖 Substack: https://substack.com/@elevatewithin LinkedIN: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sandra-davis-abb21236/ Elevate Ops Advisory https://elevateopsadvisory.com/  ⭐ APPLE PODCAST LISTENERS If this resonated with you, a rating or review would mean everything. You Don’t Need a Reason | Elevate Within Roundtable

Sandy Davis and Claudia Cuevas, LMFT, dig into cultural conditioning, code-switching, and the courage to trust yourself without proof. You don't need a reason. That's the permission at the heart of this week's Architecture of Reinvention Roundtable, where host Sandy Davis and co-host Claudia Cuevas, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, dig into the cultural conditioning thread that ran through Maiko Sakai's episode. Sandy and Claudia explore why so many women of color carry the duality of living between two cultures, the feeling of being “ni de aquí ni de allá,” neither fully here nor there and trace it back through generational conditioning, gender expectations, and immigrant experience. Claudia shares her own story as a first-generation Mexican American, and Sandy reflects on growing up between Black, Puerto Rican, and Italian heritage. They talk candidly about code-switching as both a survival skill and a quiet driver of burnout. Sandy shares a personal story about hair discrimination in investment banking, where Black women were not permitted to wear their hair naturally, and what changed for her after California's Crown Act passed in 2020. Claudia introduces a simple, practical tool: an ownership inventory for naming and integrating the dualities we carry, instead of being forced to choose one identity over another. They close on what it means to stop shrinking yourself to fit somebody else's mold. What You Will Hear in This Episode Why cultural conditioning shapes far more than career choices. The meaning behind “ni de aqui ni de alla” and what it's like to live between two cultures. Code-switching as both a superpower and a hidden driver of burnout. A personal story about hair discrimination in corporate America and the impact of the Crown Act. The difference between conforming to survive and staying authentic to change a system from within. A practical ownership inventory tool for integrating dual identities. Cultural Conditioning & Identity | Maiko Sakai

Maiko Sakai left Japan at 17 with no proof it would work. She was told to stay in her lane in two countries. She left both. Maiko Sakai grew up in Japan in what she describes as a society of conformity where nobody should stick out, nobody should be different, and the pressure to fit the standard was never spoken aloud because it did not need to be. It was simply the atmosphere. And for Maiko, who was a late bloomer feeling perpetually behind, that atmosphere settled into beliefs she would carry for decades without stopping to question whether they were true.  At seventeen she left for the United States with no proof it would work. No family. No certainty. Just a pull she could not fully explain. She built a career in music licensing and entertainment finance, navigated H1B visas, and eventually took a role managing money for high net worth clients where her boss kept telling her she was out of scope. Stay in your lane. She had left Japan specifically to escape that instruction. She got her MBA and started her own consultancy. She has been building inside her own scope ever since. In this episode of Elevate Within’s Architecture of Reinvention: The Art of Unbecoming summer series, Maiko joins Sandy Davis to talk about the invisible beliefs shaped by cultural conditioning, what it costs when those beliefs run unchecked in the background, and the diagnostic framework work she now does to help other service providers uncover the patterns that are quietly shaping their decisions. What You Will Hear in This Episode How ambient cultural conditioning installs beliefs without ever saying them out loud and why those are the hardest ones to question. What it costs to build a career as an immigrant while a visa clock is always running in the background. Why being told to stay in her lane in two countries on two continents was the same instruction and what she did about it both times. How diagnostic framework design helps people see the invisible patterns shaping their decisions and behavior. Her closing message: you do not need a reason to follow a compulsion. The proof comes later.   Connect with Maiko Sakai  LinkedIn and Threads: search Maiko Sakai — DMs open ⭐ If this resonated, please leave a rating or review, it helps reach more women who need this conversation.
