Episode 17: The Hidden Cost of Chronic Stress: Is Your Body Carrying More Than You Realize?

Episode 17: The Hidden Cost of Chronic Stress: Is Your Body Carrying More Than You Realize? You may not feel stressed—but that doesn’t mean your body isn’t carrying stress. In Episode 17 of Built, Not Burnt Out, Melissa Petersen explores the hidden cost of chronic stress and why your body responds to the total load you’re carrying—not just the things you consciously identify as stressful. Poor sleep. Hard workouts. Dieting. Parenting. Work. Relationships. Financial pressure. Pain. Perfectionism. Constant demands. Even positive things you love can add to what Melissa calls your “stress bucket.” In this episode, Melissa breaks down how chronic stress can affect: Sleep and recovery Hunger and cravings Weight and fluctuations on the scale Exercise performance and recovery Digestion Emotions, thoughts, and reactions Your ability to stay consistent with healthy habits You’ll also learn practical ways to reduce your overall stress load through sleep, walking, boundaries, quiet, recovery, and recognizing your own early warning signs. The goal isn’t to eliminate stress from your life. That’s impossible. The goal is to recognize what your body is carrying and build enough recovery and resilience to support the life you’re trying to create. Because sometimes the answer isn’t to push harder. Sometimes the problem is that you haven’t recovered enough. EPISODE 16: FROM SICK & EXHAUSTED TO HEALED & ON MISSION:Laine Penney’s Carnivore Journey & Carni-Con

EPISODE 16: FROM SICK & EXHAUSTED TO HEALED & ON MISSION:Laine Penney’s Carnivore Journey & Carni-Con What happens when decades of serious health struggles begin to change after changing what you eat? In Episode 16 of Built, Not Burnt Out, Melissa Petersen sits down with Laine Penney, co-founder of Carni-Con, to hear his powerful personal carnivore journey. Laine was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at 17 and eventually suffered a perforated colon that required surgery and the removal of approximately two feet of intestine. Over the years, he also struggled with extremely high blood pressure, triglycerides around 745, recurring gout, arthritis, chronic fatigue, insomnia, and overwhelming exhaustion. Then Laine discovered carnivore. On May 16, 2024, he began eating carnivore—and in this episode, he shares what happened next. Laine talks about his increased energy, improved sleep, weight loss, changes in his Crohn’s symptoms and arthritis, going two years without a gout attack, his triglycerides dropping from approximately 745 to 145, and his blood pressure normalizing as his doctor progressively removed his blood-pressure medications. And one unexpected change? His hair started growing back. This is Laine’s personal story of questioning what he had been told, changing his nutrition, and experiencing a transformation that ultimately became part of something much bigger. 🔥 INTRODUCING CARNI-CON 2026 Laine and his wife, Valerie Penney, are co-founders of Carni-Con, a three-day, 100% virtual carnivore convention designed to bring the carnivore community together for inspiration, education, implementation, and connection. 📅 September 18–20, 2026💻 100% Virtual🎥 Recordings available to registered attendees🌐 https://carni-con.live🎟️ REGISTER: https://carni-con.live/home?am_id=melissa8766🏷️ DISCOUNT CODE: MELISSA20 🎤 CONFIRMED PRESENTERS Thaddeus Owen • Dave Mac • Coach Stephen Thomas • Coach Charlene Andersen • Coach Barb Herrell • Dr. Sean O’Mara • Coach Melissa Petersen • Lee Copus • Dr. Robert Kiltz • Ashley Rogers of The Carnivore Brothers • Emily Penton • Jaime Gill • Lash • Coach Lisa Pickart • Brett Smith • Coach Raymond Nazon • Dr. Ana Rosa • Professor Bart Kay 🎤 MELISSA’S CARNI-CON PRESENTATION “Food Addiction Is Not Your Fault” Melissa will explore how the modern processed-food environment can influence cravings, reward pathways, and eating behavior—and why struggling with highly processed foods involves much more than simply lacking willpower. 🌱 CONNECT WITH MELISSA PETERSEN Attorney 26+ Years | Founder, The Becoming Method | Health Coach | Certified Food Addiction Advocate | Host, Built, Not Burnt Out | Fitness Instructor 22+ Years | Carnivore | Mom of 10 🔗 ALL MY LINKS:https://linktr.ee/melissapetersen10 ▶️ The Becoming Method on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@TheBecomingMethod ❤️ ENJOYED THIS EPISODE? Episode 15: STOP BEATING YOURSELF UP: The Power of Mindful Self-Compassion with Lisa Murphy

Episode 15: STOP BEATING YOURSELF UP: The Power of Mindful Self-Compassion with Lisa Murphy What if being hard on yourself isn’t actually helping you change? In Episode 15 of Built, Not Burnt Out, Melissa Petersen sits down with Lisa Murphy, M.S., a mindfulness and self-compassion practitioner and Addiction Recovery Peer Advocate, to explore the power of Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC). We often know exactly how to encourage someone we love when they’re struggling—but when we make a mistake, experience a setback, or fall short of our own expectations, our inner critic can take over. Lisa explains why self-compassion isn’t about making excuses, lowering your standards, or avoiding accountability. Instead, it’s about learning to respond to yourself with the same kindness, care, and support you would offer someone else. In this episode, Melissa and Lisa discuss: 💜 What mindful self-compassion really means💜 Why we’re often harder on ourselves than anyone else💜 Self-compassion vs. letting yourself off the hook💜 How self-compassion can support lasting behavior change💜 Addiction, cravings, setbacks, and recovery💜 How to quiet your inner critic and become more supportive of yourself💜 A simple mindful self-compassion practice you can use in your own life Lisa holds an M.S. in Psychology and is currently completing Mindful Self-Compassion Teacher Training through the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion, founded by Dr. Kristin Neff and Dr. Chris Germer. Lisa is co-teaching an 8-Week Mindful Self-Compassion Course beginning September 12. There will also be a FREE information session on August 16 at 4:00 p.m. Central for anyone interested in learning more about the course. 👉 Learn more and provide your contact information here:https://www.dr-mollie-phd.com/ 🔥 You don’t have to beat yourself up to change. Episode 14: Why the Scale Changes When You Didn’t Gain Fat | What That Number Is Really Telling You

Episode 14: Why the Scale Changes When You Didn’t Gain Fat | What That Number Is Really Telling You Have you ever stepped on the scale, seen the number go up, and immediately thought, “What did I do wrong?” You ate well. You stayed consistent. Maybe you even worked out. Yet somehow, the scale went UP. Before you assume you gained fat, there’s something you need to know: the scale measures weight—not body fat. In Episode 14 of Built, Not Burnt Out, Melissa Petersen breaks down what that number is really telling you and why your weight can fluctuate even when you’re making progress. We’re talking about water retention, sodium, carbohydrates and glycogen, exercise and muscle recovery, inflammation, digestion, hormones, stress, sleep, and more. You’ll also learn why one of the most powerful things you can do for your health journey is stop responding to the scale with criticism and start responding with curiosity. Because the scale can’t measure your consistency. It can’t measure your strength. It can’t measure better energy, fewer cravings, improved health, inches lost, or the healthy habits you’re building. The scale is giving you information—but it isn’t telling you the whole story. 🎧 LISTEN & WATCH Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2pB8hQPE8DMh8q4APLBIaa Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/built-not-burnt-out/id1896886125 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@the_becoming_method 🔗 CONNECT WITH MELISSA All Links: https://linktr.ee/melissapetersen10 Website: https://TheBecomingMethod.com Facebook: https://facebook.com/MelissaMPetersen Instagram: https://instagram.com/the_becoming_method TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@the_becoming_method LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/melissampetersen Health isn’t built by one perfect day. Episode 13: Why Do I React Like That? | Episode 13: Why Do I React Like That? | Understanding the Parts of You That Are Trying To Protect You

Episode 13: Why Do I React Like That? | Understanding the Parts of You That Are Trying To Protect You Have you ever caught yourself saying... "I don't know why I reacted that way." You're not alone. In this episode of Built, Not Burnt Out, Melissa Petersen sits down with Susan Amanda, MBA, RN, to explore one of the most powerful tools they've encountered for lasting transformation: Internal Family Systems (IFS), also known as parts work. Both Melissa and Susan are Certified Food Addiction Advocates through Joan Ifland's Addiction Reset Community (ARC) and are trained in peer-guided IFS. Together, they explain how understanding the different "parts" of ourselves can help us break free from shame, improve relationships, overcome self-sabotaging behaviors, and create lasting change. If you've ever wondered why one part of you wants to eat healthy while another reaches for comfort food, why you overreact in certain situations, or why you keep repeating the same patterns even when you desperately want to change, this episode is for you. Instead of asking, "What's wrong with me?" you'll learn to ask a much more powerful question: "What part of me is trying to protect me?" ✔️ What Internal Family Systems (IFS) and parts work are ✔️ Why we all have different "parts" that influence our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors ✔️ How protective parts develop—and why they're actually trying to help us ✔️ Why shame keeps us stuck, while curiosity opens the door to healing ✔️ What a peer-guided parts work session looks like ✔️ How understanding your parts can improve your relationships, emotional health, and recovery journey This conversation is about more than food addiction. It's about understanding yourself with greater compassion so you can respond differently, heal old patterns, and become the person you were created to be. Episode 12: Putting Chronic Disease Into Remission with Susan Amanda, MBA, RN Can chronic disease really be put into remission? In this episode of Built, Not Burnt Out, Melissa Petersen sits down with Susan Amanda, MBA, RN, a licensed nurse, Certified Food Addiction Professional through Joan Ifland's Addiction Reset Community (ARC), and leader of ARC's Chronic Disease Remission Group. Susan shares her personal journey from food addiction to recovery and explains why so many chronic illnesses are driven by metabolic dysfunction and food addiction rather than simply bad luck or aging. Together, Melissa and Susan discuss what it means to address the root causes of disease instead of merely managing symptoms. They explore the growing evidence that nutrition, food addiction recovery, metabolic health, and lifestyle change can help many people achieve remission from chronic diseases and reclaim their lives. Whether you're living with obesity, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, hypertension, chronic inflammation, autoimmune conditions, or simply want to understand why your body isn't healing, this episode offers practical insights and hope. • The connection between food addiction and chronic disease• Why metabolic health is foundational to healing• What "chronic disease remission" really means• Why treating root causes matters more than symptom management• How nutrition and lifestyle influence long-term health• The work Susan is doing through the Addiction Reset Community to help people restore their health Healing begins when we stop asking, "How do I manage this disease?" and start asking, "Why is my body struggling in the first place?"
