We cover hyperpigmentation, melasma, acne, exfoliation, sunscreen, retinoids, the skin barrier, and ingredients that actually work for your skin biology — the questions most skincare content never asks. New episodes weekly.

The Cosmetic Chemist's Guide to Exfoliating Black & Brown Skin

Chemical exfoliation for Black and Brown skin is not the same question as chemical exfoliation in general. The same acid at the same percentage can give someone a visible glow and give someone with melanin-rich skin a dark mark that outlasts the problem they were treating. In this episode, we break down why. We get into the three acid families, AHAs including glycolic, lactic, and mandelic acid, BHAs including salicylic acid, and PHAs for the most reactive skin, and explain what each one actually does, how deep it reaches, and who should start where. We cover the pH truth that most label percentages don't tell you: a 5% acid at the right pH typically outperforms a 10% at the wrong one, and formulators raise the pH on purpose for reasons that matter. We explain why irritation from over-exfoliating activates the same pigmentation pathway as any other injury on melanin-rich skin, and why the minimum effective dose is always the correct frame for this audience, not the maximum tolerable dose. We close with frequency, what not to combine, and how to check whether your routine is accidentally stacking acid-load without you realising. Free routine guides at blackskinscience.com. Ethnicity-Specific Hyperpigmentation Ingredients | What Works for Black & Brown Skin

Most hyperpigmentation guides were built on research that didn't center Black and Brown skin. The ingredient that works best for your dark spots depends partly on your ethnicity — and most skincare content never tells you that. In this episode we go through the evidence with that filter applied. Which ingredients have strong data for skin like ours. Which ones carry specific risks for darker skin that the research doesn't flag prominently. And the routine structure to use them without breaking your barrier in the process. If you haven't listened to Part 1 — The 3-Stage System — start there first. The biology of how dark spots form makes this episode significantly more useful. The ONE Science-Backed Rule for Dark Spots Every Black Woman Should Know | Hyperpigmentation routine 🔬 What we cover: — Why mainstream ingredient lists are incomplete for melanin-rich skin— Hydroquinone vs Tretinoin: the burst treatment safety profile— Trigger matching: how to choose actives for melasma vs post-acne PIH— The one-at-a-time introduction schedule to protect your skin barrier— Pregnancy-safe hyperpigmentation routines that actually work If you are pregnant or planning to be — do not skip the pregnancy section.
