How did a fine arts scene first emerge in Sharjah?   What connected artists in the UAE to cultural movements in the Gulf, the wider Arab world and beyond?   And how can we rethink about modernism in the region before the rise of today’s global contemporary art scene, of which the UAE is a major hub?    To find out, tune in to Radial Histories, a six-part audio miniseries  that brings to light untold stories about visual art in Sharjah and the wider UAE from the 1960s to the early 1990s, just before the inception of the Sharjah Biennial in 1993.   Taking Sharjah as its point of departure, the series features interviews with leading artists, curators, critics and institution-builders, as well as archival sound and historical analysis.   Following movements inward and outward, the six chapters map the flow of people and ideas across expanding geographies and trace the shifts in political currents from the local to the international.  Radial Histories  offers a new way of listening to the past—one that deepens our understanding of the present.

    Radial Histories, a six-part audio miniseries produced by Sharjah Art Foundation, weaves together oral histories, archival sound and scholarly commentary to narrate untold stories about visual art in Sharjah and the wider UAE from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, just before the inception of the Sharjah Biennial.  Before the international acclaim of the Sharjah Biennial and the UAE’s contemporary art boom, there were decades of experimentation, exchange and cultural formation. In this opening episode, host May Alqaydi is joined by researchers Kamayani Sharma and Hasan Hujairi to introduce the concept, methodology and unexpected moments behind the series.     Radial Histories, a six-part audio miniseries produced by Sharjah Art Foundation, weaves together oral histories, archival sound and scholarly commentary to narrate untold stories about visual art in Sharjah and the wider UAE from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, just before the inception of the Sharjah Biennial. Set against the rise of Pan-Arabism and the era of Gamal Abdel Nasser, this episode situates the UAE’s emerging art scene within regional solidarities and political shifts. Abdulaziz Almusallam, Jassim Ali Awadhi, Mohamed Yousif, Abdulraheem Salim, Ali Al Abdan and Fatma Lootah reflect on how a coastal, cosmopolitan society absorbed new media, technologies and pedagogies. Early photographers such as Abdul Kareem ‘Captain’ and Muneera Al Mazrou helped shift image-making from documentation to self-representation, while magazines from Lebanon and Egypt circulated new visual languages. Educational ties with Kuwait and the arrival of Palestinian, Egyptian and Syrian teachers further embedded the Emirates within wider Arab cultural networks.     Radial Histories, a six-part audio miniseries produced by Sharjah Art Foundation, weaves together oral histories, archival sound and scholarly commentary to narrate untold stories about visual art in Sharjah and the wider UAE from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, just before the inception of the Sharjah Biennial. In this episode, we enter the 1970s—an era of radio waves, revolutions and artistic departures. Through the voices of Fatma Lootah, Najat Makki, Mona Al Khaja and others, we trace how some of the first Emirati artists pursued formal training abroad, navigating the cultural currents of Baghdad and Cairo. In Baghdad, Lootah encountered a vibrant modernist scene shaped by figures like Faiq Hassan and Soviet-era exchange. In Cairo, students formed the Emirates Students Association and exhibited their work while studying at Cairo University, even visiting the Alexandria Biennale.     Radial Histories, a six-part audio miniseries produced by Sharjah Art Foundation, weaves together oral histories, archival sound and scholarly commentary to narrate untold stories about visual art in Sharjah and the wider UAE from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, just before the inception of the Sharjah Biennial. This chapter explores the vibrant artistic landscape of Sharjah during the 1980s, a decade marked by experimentation, collaboration and the return of artists trained overseas. Through the voices of artists and writers, including Najat Makki, Mohammed Kazem, Mohamed Yousif, Abdulraheem Salim, Ali Al Abdan and Khalid Albudoor, the episode reveals how artist collectives, cultural clubs and informal ateliers shaped a cosmopolitan visual arts ecology shaped by both local and émigré participants. These independent initiatives paralleled and intersected with state-supported exchange with regional neighbours through Gulf Cooperation Council Youth exhibitions and distant nations such as the Soviet Union.     Radial Histories, a six-part audio miniseries produced by Sharjah Art Foundation, weaves together oral histories, archival sound and scholarly commentary to narrate untold stories about visual art in Sharjah and the wider UAE from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, just before the inception of the Sharjah Biennial. In the 1980s, Sharjah was witness to the rise of experimental practices and leftist thought as well as the tussle between institutional frameworks and independent initiatives. Featuring conversations with Yousif Aydabi, Khalid Albudoor, Mohammed Kazem and Aisha Stoby, this episode traces how artists and writers navigated a rapidly evolving artistic landscape. Central to this moment was the Aqwas collective, whose self-published journal Silsilat Al Ramad challenged dominant artistic norms through experimental poetry and visual work. These practices were informed by socialist and Marxist ideas circulating through Arab intellectual networks and Cold War geopolitical circuits. The Arabic-language newspaper Al Khaleej also fostered critical debate, despite tensions around censorship and publishing restrictions.     Radial Histories, a six-part audio miniseries produced by Sharjah Art Foundation, weaves together oral histories, archival sound and scholarly commentary to narrate untold stories about visual art in Sharjah and the wider UAE from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, just before the inception of the Sharjah Biennial. In this episode, host May Alqaydi and researchers Kamayani Sharma and Hasan Hujairi reflect together on the conceptual arc traced across Radial Histories. Their discussion revisits regional solidarities and the formation of local institutions, situating these developments within wider political currents, including Pan-Arabism, Cold War alignments and postcolonial exchange. About

How did a fine arts scene first emerge in Sharjah?   What connected artists in the UAE to cultural movements in the Gulf, the wider Arab world and beyond?   And how can we rethink about modernism in the region before the rise of today’s global contemporary art scene, of which the UAE is a major hub?    To find out, tune in to Radial Histories, a six-part audio miniseries  that brings to light untold stories about visual art in Sharjah and the wider UAE from the 1960s to the early 1990s, just before the inception of the Sharjah Biennial in 1993.   Taking Sharjah as its point of departure, the series features interviews with leading artists, curators, critics and institution-builders, as well as archival sound and historical analysis.   Following movements inward and outward, the six chapters map the flow of people and ideas across expanding geographies and trace the shifts in political currents from the local to the international.  Radial Histories  offers a new way of listening to the past—one that deepens our understanding of the present.
