Inside the Legal AI Trust Layer | GenieAI Legal Engineers | Out of the Bottle by GenieAI

Fluency is not expertise. A document can read like a seasoned counsel wrote it and still be wrong in a way nobody notices for five years. In Episode 6 of Out of the Bottle, Rafie Faruq sits down with the two legal engineers who work on Genie every day: Swetha Meenal, formerly an AI ethics researcher at the University of Melbourne and a litigator in India, and Imad Nazar, who trained and qualified into M&A at Skadden in London before joining GenieAI. They get into what it actually takes to make a machine think like a counsel: acquiring the right context from an ambiguous brief, running a process you can explain, and producing an outcome rather than a document. Then the trust layer: citations, deep links, provenance mapping, and negative evidence, so when the AI says "not found" you can see whether that means "it isn't there" or "page 80 didn't scan". 00:00 - Meet the legal engineers 01:52 - Does a legal AI company need real lawyers? 05:11 - Fabricated case law, and thinking like a counsel 06:56 - Not a document. An outcome. 09:18 - Context rot: why AI reads the middle worst 13:39 - What should never be automated 16:44 - Where AI belongs in an in-house team 19:24 - Judgment of judgments, and the art of lawyering 23:20 - The verification paradox 23:51 - The trust layer: citations, deep links, provenance 25:33 - Negative evidence: when the AI says "not found" 27:23 - The Future Lawyer Fellowship 32:02 - In-house is here to stay. Law firms should worry. 36:30 - AI native law firms, and what they really charge for 40:53 - Advice, and the one question to ask your vendor Out of the Bottle is a podcast by GenieAI, conversations with the people building, leading and rethinking the future of work. 👉 Subscribe for new episodes. 💬 Buying or building legal AI? They Told Us It Was Impossible: Building Genie 3.0 | Out of the Bottle by GenieAI

They asked a room full of machine learning experts if it could be done. Every answer was no. In Episode 5 of Out of the Bottle, Nitish Mutha (Co-Founder and CTO) sits down with the engineers Daniele Tassone, Head of AI Engineering, Merve Kucuk, Senior Software Engineer, and John Davison, Lead Frontend Engineer to talk about Genie 3.0 This is the full behind the scenes of an agentic legal system, built in November 2025, before Claude Cowork or anything like it existed. They get into the insight the whole product rests on (contracts are owned by business teams, not lawyers), the shift from human in the loop to AI in the loop, and the state machine they describe as an escape room: four phases the AI cannot leave until every legal criteria is satisfied. Plus GLF, the temporal graph that lets Genie know whether a WhatsApp message came before or after the contract was signed. Thinking steps, and why a slower answer can be the selling point. Agentic evals, personas and simulating how real customers will break the product. And how the team got the whole thing token efficient enough to start at £56. 400,000 conversations and legal cases solved so far, and GenieAI 4.0 is already in the works. 00:00 - Intro 01:10 - Why we built Genie 3.0: contracts aren't owned by lawyers 03:05 - They told us it was impossible 04:57 - What Genie 3.0 actually is 06:24 - Not an AI wrapper: designing a UI for a system that can do anything 09:56 - Teaching the agent to ask the right questions 13:28 - "It read my mind": testing with real lawyers 14:23 - The AI was talking like a lawyer 17:00 - Inside the multi-agent system 19:41 - How do you evaluate a system with no precedent? 21:42 - The first user tests, from the UK to South Africa 22:16 - Testing an AI that can do anything 25:20 - Simulating how customers will break it 28:45 - The escape room: four phases the AI can't leave 32:56 - 400,000 cases, and the technology underneath 34:04 - GLF: the temporal graph behind document intelligence 35:57 - Thinking steps, and why slower can be better 39:11 - One clause, a several hundred page document 40:38 - We built this before Cowork existed 41:40 - The most innovative thing we did 46:21 - Wrap up, and a spoiler about Genie 4.0 🔗 Nitish Mutha: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nitishmutha 🔗 Daniele Tassone: https://www.linkedin.com/in/danieletassone 🔗 Merve Kucuk: https://www.linkedin.com/in/merve-kucuk 🔗 John Davison: https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-davison-87813953 Out of the Bottle is a podcast by GenieAI, conversations with the people building, leading and rethinking the future of work and shaping the AI industry. 👉 Subscribe for new episodes. 💬 Building agentic systems yourself?
