    June 15-21 "The Battle is the Lord's" 1 Samuel17-18;24-26; 2Samuel 5-7

The story of David and Goliath is one of the best known stories in the scriptures. But our song this week points past David to the coming Messiah: - David is the anointed shepherd who fights and wins the battle Israel cannot, a type of Christ, the Good Shepherd and Anointed One, who saves "not with sword." - Verse 2 sharpens the type: the hunted, already-anointed-but-uncrowned David spares his persecutor and refuses to seize the throne by force ("He spared his pursuer, refusing the crown"). This foreshadows Christ, who would not grasp at power, endured persecution, and forgave from the cross. - The bridge sets the Davidic covenant of 2 Samuel 7 (the established throne, the kingdom of mercy) as God's spoken promise, then names its fulfillment:   "the true Son of David." It carries that title straight to Calvary ("hung high on a hill") and the empty tomb, so the hook "the battle is the Lord's" becomes the victory of the Atonement and Resurrection, where "He reigns evermore." Lyrics: A giant came down where the valley grew wide, "I defy the armies of Israel!" he cried. But a young shepherd boy was not greatly dismayed: "The God who once saved me will come to our aid." No sword on his hip, no shield and no spear, Just the name of the Lord, ringing out clear. And the weak become strong, and the trembling stand tall, When they know it is God who will fight for them all. The battle's not yours, you don't fight alone, He saves not with sword, but a strength of His own. No matter how loud, no matter how tall, The battle is the Lord's, watch the giants fall. An outlaw in hiding, pursued by the king, With no weapon to hold and no stone in his sling; He spared his pursuer, refusing the crown, And trusted the Lord to bring righteousness down. No sword on his hip, no shield and no spear, Just the name of the Lord, ringing out clear. And the weak become strong, and the trembling stand tall, When they know it is God who will fight for them all. The battle's not yours, you don't fight alone, He saves not with sword, but a strength of His own. No matter how loud, no matter how tall, The battle is the Lord's, watch the giants fall. A promise was spoken to build Him a throne, A kingdom of mercy that He'd call His own; Then the true Son of David hung high on a hill, The battle was finished, He's winning it still! The battle is won, lay your burdens down, He saves not with sword, but a thorny crown. The empty tomb speaks, though hell tries to roar, The battle is the Lord's, He reigns evermore! The battle is the Lord's. The battle is the Lord's. June 8-14 "The Lord Looketh on the Heart", 1 Samuel 8-10; 13; 15-16

From the stories of Saul and David we learn hard lessons about obedience, humility, pride, and rebellion. We learn that the Lord sees past our labels, our physical appearance, our insecurities. He looks, instead, “on the heart”. And even when our heart isn’t quite right, if we’re willing, He will give us “another heart”.  We learn to see the type of the true Shepherd-King in the Old Testament with allusions to Christ in the New.  Lyrics: A boy went searching for donkeys gone astray, He didn't know the prophet would anoint him on the way. Head and shoulders rising higher than the rest of all his kin, Yet little in his own sight when the call came to him. On the day they crowned him king they searched the city through, And found him hiding, hidden far from public view. Make us a king to judge us, like the nations standing tall, A man of stature, sword in hand, a crown above us all. The Lord said: I have heard their voice, they cast their God aside, They want a king to march before them in their human pride. The Lord looks on the heart, Man looks on the vessel, but the Lord looks on the heart, The Lord sees what's in our heart, What no eye sees, what no hand can chart, The Lord looks on the heart. Saul watched his scattered army shake, impatience turned to pride, He stepped into the prophet's place before the smoke had died. Rebellion is a heavy chain that tears the soul apart, Obedience is the sacrifice that wins the Father's heart. In Bethlehem the prophet came to Jesse's dwelling place, Seven sons before him passed, but God looked past each face. Behold the Lord's Anointed, Samuel saw the eldest tall, But God said, Look beneath the crown, for I refuse them all. Out in the field the youngest stood, his lambs around his feet, A keeper of his father's sheep, a heart God called complete. The Lord looks on the heart, Man looks on the vessel, but the Lord looks on the heart, The Lord looks on the heart, What no eye sees, what no hand can chart, The Lord looks on the heart. He seeks a man of humble heart, selected from the shade, A royal line of shepherd-kings, by sovereign purpose made. No crown of gold, no earthly pride, the True Anointed Son — The Shepherd King who gave His soul to save the scattered one. The Lord looks on the heart, (the Lord looks on the heart) Man looks on the vessel, but the Lord looks on the heart, The Lord looks on the heart, (oh, the Lord looks on the heart) What no eye sees, what no hand can chart, The Lord looks on the heart, He mends the broken pieces, shapes the human heart. The Lord looks on the heart. The Lord looks on the heart, The Lord looks on the heart, (He mends the broken pieces, shapes the human heart.) The Lord looks on the heart, The Lord looks on the heart.
