UniCredit Bank GmbH v Celestial Aviation Services Ltd

When sanctions law is unclear, do you pay and risk breaching sanctions, or refuse and risk being sued for breach of contract? In this episode, Naomi Wilkinson and Hannah Pring, founders of SanctionsIQ, unpack the landmark case of UniCredit Bank GmbH v Celestial Aviation Services Ltd. They explore what happens when businesses find themselves caught between sanctions legislation and contractual obligations, and how a series of court decisions ultimately overturned the market's understanding of how Letters of Credit operate and when payments could lawfully be made. The case raises fundamental questions about sanctions clauses, legal uncertainty and who bears the risk when compliance and commercial obligations collide.

The Strait of Hormuz

You don’t need Iranian oil, an Iranian counterparty or even an Iranian destination to end up with an Iranian sanctions problem. In this episode, Naomi Wilkinson and Hannah Pring, founders of SanctionsIQ, explore sanctions against Iran, the Strait of Hormuz and how seemingly ordinary transactions can create unexpected sanctions exposure. We discuss why traditional screening frameworks may miss the risks that matter most in this context and why sanctions intelligence is becoming critical in an increasingly complex world.
