Miami just put it in writing. On Oct. 2, the presidents and chancellors of Miami, Florida State, Clemson and North Carolina sent a joint letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Majority Whip Tom Emmer. They asked for two changes to the Protect College Sports Act, and both make it easier for a school to leave its conference. The Senate passed the bill 77-22 on Sept. 28. As it stands, it caps power conferences at 20 schools (up from 19, thanks to Sen. Ashley Moody's amendment) and makes a school that switches power conferences play three years as an independent first (down from five). The four schools want the cap raised to 22 and the three-year rule removed entirely.
