    A Contadora Oculta

A Contadora Oculta is a European Portuguese podcast for learners at every level, from A1 to C2. Each episode features an original story or a text from the Portuguese literary public domain, narrated and followed by graded commentary on vocabulary, grammar, and semantics. You will never see my face. But you will hear the language as it truly exists, one story at a time. This is not a classroom. This is not literary analysis. This is European Portuguese, told by a hidden voice, one story at a time. 📚 In a quiet library in Portugal's highest city, two strangers find warmth in the coldest of winters. In this episode of A Contadora Oculta, I narrate an original short story in European Portuguese — A Biblioteca da Guarda — set in the snow-covered streets of Guarda, where Cristina, a librarian surrounded by old books and comfortable silence, meets Rui, a wanderer from the Algarve discovering the North. This story is rated B1/B2 . After the narration, I guide you through the key vocabulary, grammar, and/or semantics of the text with clear, graded explanations designed to help you understand and internalise European Portuguese as it is truly written and spoken. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒂𝒄𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒏𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓, 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒖𝒂𝒈𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒕. METHODOLOGICAL NOTE:This podcast is exclusively didactic and linguistic in nature. All commentary focuses on the lexical, morphosyntactic, semantic, and pragmatic dimensions of the texts and does not constitute literary criticism, textual interpretation, or hermeneutic analysis of any kind. Episodes are organised according to CEFR proficiency levels, from A1 to C2. At A1 and A2, explanations are provided in English. As levels progress, commentary transitions into European Portuguese, reflecting the learner's own growth. At C1 and C2, all commentary is conducted exclusively in Portuguese. Some excerpts belong to works in the public domain, used exclusively within an educational and linguistic commentary context, in accordance with applicable copyright legislation. O silêncio foi crescendo, cobrindo as palavras não ditas. O musgo foi aumentando, cobrindo as pedras antigas. THE GERUND IN EUROPEAN PORTUGUESE — when to use it: This is an important distinction from Brazilian Portuguese. In European Portuguese the gerund is used much more restrictively than in Brazilian Portuguese. Here are the rules: USE the gerund in European Portuguese when: The gerund in European Portuguese — the honest rule: The gerund exists and is used in European Portuguese in three main situations: 1. Literary and poetic language — as in your text: "cobrindo tudo de sentido" 2. Regional everyday speech — Alentejo, Algarve, Madeira, Açores: "Estou comendo" is heard naturally in these regions 3. Simultaneous actions — "Lá foram eles, correndo e cantando" though European Portuguese more commonly prefers "a + infinitive": "Lá foram eles, a correr e a cantar." The key distinction for learners: The construction "estar/andar/vir/ir a + infinitive" is the dominant form in standard European Portuguese — "Estou a comer" rather than "Estou comendo."   SOCIAL MEDIA: https://www.instagram.com/speakportugal/ https://www.youtube.com/@SpeakPortugalPLJ If you’re just starting out, I recommend my Absolute Beginners Course at www.speakportugal.pt.
