    Don't Raise Weak Children

Are we protecting our children so much that we're actually holding them back? Every parent wants to give their children a better life. We want to protect them from hardship, provide opportunities we never had, and make their childhood as wonderful as possible. But could our good intentions be preventing them from developing the resilience, independence, and work ethic they'll need as adults? In this episode of Faith Fit Family, Carlyn shares some hard truths about modern parenting and why raising strong, capable children sometimes means allowing them to struggle, work hard, and experience disappointment. Drawing from her own difficult childhood, years of working multiple jobs, and experiences raising two daughters in very different financial circumstances, Carlyn explains why children need more than comfort and privilege to become successful adults. In this episode, you'll discover: Why overprotecting children can leave them unprepared for adulthoodThe difference between protecting kids from adult problems and sheltering them from valuable life experiencesWhy part-time jobs, even ones teenagers don't enjoy, build character and work ethicHow privilege can unintentionally create entitlementThe importance of teaching practical life skills like cleaning, budgeting, and household responsibilitiesWhy children need to understand that success must be earnedHow to raise resilient, independent kids who can handle life's challengesCarlyn also shares how working at McDonald's as a teenager shaped her perspective on education and hard work, how her older daughter's restaurant job taught her gratitude, and why she's making changes at home to ensure her younger daughter develops essential life skills. Our goal isn't to raise children who never experience difficulty. It's to raise children who know they can overcome it. Whether you're raising young children, navigating the teenage years, or planning for a family in the future, this episode will challenge you to consider whether you're truly preparing your children for the world they'll eventually face. Adult Children & In-Laws: Boundaries, Letting Go & Staying Close

What happens to the parent-child relationship when your kids become adults? And how do you navigate in-laws, marriage, boundaries, and changing family roles without damaging the relationships that matter most? In this episode of Faith Fit Family, Carlyn talks about one of the hardest transitions in family life: learning to step back as your children grow up. As parents, we spend years guiding, protecting, correcting, and making decisions for our children. But eventually, that role has to change. Carlyn shares why parents of adult children need to move from being the authority to becoming a trusted friend and “guide on the side”—offering support without unsolicited advice, judgment, or control. She also tackles the complicated world of in-law relationships and family boundaries. When you get married, your spouse becomes your primary family relationship. That may mean setting new boundaries with your own parents around visits, advice, grandchildren, holidays, and involvement in your home and marriage. And if you're becoming the in-law? Carlyn explains why the same principle applies: offer help, love, and support—but know when to step back. In this episode: • How your relationship with your children should change as they become adults • Why unsolicited advice can push adult children away • Letting go of control while remaining close to your kids • Setting healthy boundaries with parents after marriage • Putting your spouse first when family expectations conflict • How to be a supportive mother-in-law or father-in-law • Building relationships with a son-in-law or daughter-in-law • Respecting your children's parenting decisions with your grandchildren • Why adult children should extend grace to their parents and in-laws • Creating the kind of family your grown children actually want to come home to Strong families don't happen automatically. They require intention, healthy boundaries, humility, and a willingness to let relationships change as the people we love enter new seasons of life. Whether you're raising teenagers, parenting adult children, preparing for an empty nest, navigating difficult in-laws, or becoming an in-law yourself, this conversation will help you think differently about the role you play in your family. Faith Fit Family is about becoming stronger in faith, marriage, parenting, family, health, discipline, and the everyday work of building a life and home you love. E20: How to Handle Stress and Anxiety

Navigating Stress: Foundational Practices for Peace Explore practical ways to handle stress, overwhelm, and anxiety. Life is a journey filled with peaks and valleys. As Carlyn shares on the Faith Fit Family podcast, we all encounter stress and overwhelm at different points. Today, she offers practical, grounded approaches to navigate these challenges, emphasizing that while life is ever-changing, there are effective ways to cope. Seeking God in Times of Stress Carlyn begins with a powerful reminder: "Going back to God will absolutely help you with your depression and your stress." Engaging with your faith can provide a solid foundation during turbulent times. Whether it's through prayer, reading scripture, or using a devotional, reaching out to God can anchor you when life feels overwhelming. Carlyn encourages listeners to actively seek out God, reminding us that "He is all powerful, already knows what's going on, can and will handle it for you in ways better than you could have ever asked for or imagined." This relationship can be transformative, helping to alleviate feelings of isolation and helplessness. The Power of Gratitude Next, Carlyn shifts to the science-backed benefits of gratitude. She highlights that "how you set your mind determines how your life is." This perspective is vital, especially in challenging times. Take a cue from Corrie ten Boom, who, despite her harrowing experiences during the Holocaust, found reasons to be grateful—even for the fleas in her bedding. Carlyn suggests keeping a gratitude journal, writing down at least one thing you’re thankful for each day. Exercise: A Non-Negotiable Carlyn emphasizes the critical role of exercise in managing stress. She notes, "Exercise is going to help you emotionally... it helps the same, if not more so, than medication in the majority of the cases." The endorphins released during physical activity can dramatically enhance your mood. While the urge to retreat into comfort may be strong, it's essential to fight that impulse and get moving. "No one feels worse after they exercise," Carlyn states, encouraging listeners to push through, even when it feels tough. Connecting with Friends Lastly, Carlyn reminds us of the importance of maintaining connections with friends during stressful times. Social support can provide a buffer against the pressures we face, so carve out time for those who uplift you. In summary, Carlyn's insights offer a roadmap for dealing with stress: seek God, cultivate gratitude, commit to exercise, and nurture your relationships. These foundational practices can equip you to face life's challenges with resilience and hope. Remember, while we can’t control every situation, we can control how we respond to them. For more in-depth insights and personal stories, tune into the full episode of the Faith Fit Family podcast. Reflect on these strategies and consider how they might fit into your life. You are not alone in this journey; there are ways to find peace amidst the chaos.

E19: Why Movement Matters - The Hard Truth

What you do with your body today can have a major impact on how you live decades from now. In this episode of the Faith Fit Family Podcast, Carlyn shares why simply moving your body consistently may be one of the most important things you can do for your long-term health, strength, mobility, and quality of life. After growing up in a family where healthy eating and exercise weren't a priority, Carlyn saw firsthand how declining health can affect not only how long someone lives, but how well they are able to live. She also shares the other side of that story: people in their 70s who are still walking, lifting weights, getting up and down from the floor, and living active, independent lives. Their secret isn't an extreme fitness routine. It's decades of consistency. This episode isn't about becoming a marathon runner or spending hours every day in the gym. It's about starting where you are and making movement part of your life. Carlyn discusses: • Why your health in your 70s and 80s starts with what you're doing today • What a 73-year-old woman taught her about consistency and healthy aging • Why strength and mobility become increasingly important as we age • The connection between body weight, joint health, and quality of life • Why you may be moving much less than you think • How tracking your daily steps can reveal your true activity level • Why adding just 2,000 steps can be a realistic place to start • How small, sustainable changes can become lifelong habits • Taking responsibility for the health choices you can control •A Christian perspective on caring for your body Your challenge this week: Find out how much you're actually moving. Track your steps, establish your current baseline, and then look for a realistic way to increase your movement. Instead of trying to change everything overnight, start small and build from there. Your future health isn't something you begin working on when you're 70 or 80. You're building it right now.
