EP11|Growing Up with Avatar "Korra"|My First English Episode

This is my very first English episode of Salty Chat.(For this episode, I decided to include the full script down below.) English isn’t my first language, and this script was created with the help of AI. This isn’t an English lesson or a test of how fluent I am. It’s simply a way for me to practice speaking, improve my confidence, and document my learning journey. Hi everyone! I’m Allen. Welcome to Salty Chat. I’m really happy you’re here today. Before we begin, I want to say something about today’s episode. As you can probably tell from the title, this episode is going to be completely in English. Before you judge my English, let me explain. This script was written with the help of AI. I used AI to organize my ideas and make my sentences sound more natural. So please don’t think this is a test of my English ability. This is something much more personal. One of the reasons I started this podcast is because I want to record little pieces of my life and become better at expressing myself. Recently, I realized that I also want to improve my spoken English. Instead of studying from textbooks every day, I thought, “Why not talk about something I really love?” So that’s what this series is. You can think of it as a fun speech. Or maybe an English journal. It’s just simply me practicing speaking English while sharing things that I’m really love. Maybe I’ll make mistakes. Maybe my pronunciation isn’t perfect. But that’s okay. Because the goal isn’t perfection. The goal is progress. Hopefully, a year from now, I can come back to this episode, listen to it again, and smile because I’ve improved. So Let’s begin. Today, I want to talk about one of my favorite animated series of all time. The Legend of Korra. Recently, the Avatar universe has become popular again because of the upcoming Avatar movie. It reminded me how much I love this world. But today, I don’t want to explain the story. I don’t want to summarize every season. Instead, I want to talk about Korra herself. Because I truly believe she is one of the most misunderstood main characters in animation. Whenever people compare Korra with Aang, the conversation usually sounds the same. People say that Aang is wiser. Aang is kinder. Aang is a better Avatar. And what about Korra? She’s too emotional. Too reckless. Too impatient. I’ve seen these opinions for years. And honestly… I understand them. When I first watched The Legend of Korra, I felt the same way. I kept comparing her to Aang. I wanted another peaceful, gentle, and optimistic Avatar. But the more I grew up, the more I realized something. Maybe Korra wasn’t supposed to be another Aang. Maybe that’s the whole point. Aang and Korra were born into completely different worlds. Aang grew up during a terrible war. His mission was to bring peace back to the world. Korra, on the other hand, was born into a world that was already changing. The war was over. Technology was developing. Politics became more complicated. Different cultures were becoming connected. People were questioning authority. The world no longer needed someone to end a war. It needed someone who could survive constant change. And I think that’s exactly what Korra represents. One thing I admire about Korra is that she never stops trying. She fails. Again. And again. X2 She loses confidence. She loses her connection to the past Avatars. She even loses herself. But every time she falls down, she slowly finds a way to stand up again. To me, that’s much more inspiring than someone who never fails. Because real life feels more like Korra’s journey. Most of us don’t win every battle. Sometimes we feel lost. Sometimes we question ourselves. Sometimes we don’t even know who we are anymore. Another reason why I love The Legend of Korra is its villains. In many stories, villains are simply evil. But not here. Every major villain believes they’re making the world better. Amon wants equality. Zaheer wants freedom. Kuvira wants order. If you only listen to their goals, they doesn’t (it’s don’t here) sound completely unreasonable. The problem is how they try to achieve them. That’s what makes these characters so interesting. They remind us that good ideas can become dangerous when they’re taken to the extreme. Among all the villains, Zaheer is probably my favorite. Not because I agree with him. Don’t get me wrong. Actually, I disagree with many of his actions. But I think he’s one of the most fascinating characters in the Avatar universe. He completely changes Korra’s life. Even after she defeats him, the psychological trauma remains. And I think that’s one of the bravest things this series ever did. Instead of pretending that heroes recover overnight, it shows us that healing takes time. After everything Korra went through, she suffered from fear, self-doubt, and trauma. She couldn’t even recognize herself anymore. Watching her struggle was painful. But it also made her feel incredibly human. Sometimes, the strongest people aren’t the ones who never break. They’re the ones who learn how to rebuild themselves. I think that’s the biggest lesson Korra taught me. Strength isn’t just about fighting. It’s about facing your fears. Accepting your weaknesses. Learning from your mistakes. And continuing to move forward, even when you’re scared. That’s why, today, I actually relate to Korra more than Aang. Not because she’s stronger. But because she’s imperfect. And maybe that’s exactly why she feels so real. If you’ve never watched The Legend of Korra, I highly recommend giving it a chance. Not because it’s better than Avatar: The Last Airbender. Of course. I don’t think they should compete. I think they’re telling two completely different stories. Aang teaches us how to become a hero. Korra teaches us how to remain one after life breaks us. And honestly… I think both lessons are equally important. Thank you so much for listening to today’s episode. If you enjoyed this little experiment, maybe I’ll continue making more English episodes in the future. And again, this podcast isn’t about speaking perfect English. It’s about enjoying the journey of learning, one conversation at a time. I’m Allen. And this is Salty Chat. Thank you for listening. I’ll see you in the next episode.
