    Jack-O (1995)

This very special Halloween episode of Video Vestige is about the classic 1995 B-horror film Jack-O. This film has some unusual stories behind it, starting with a scream queen contest on the Phil Donahue Show where the winner would be in a real movie! Except they didn’t have a movie planned. So director Steven Latshaw and producer Fred Olen Ray scrambled to make our beloved Jack-O in three months. Hosts Diana and Audrey talk about all the behind the scenes antics, including how Joe Bob Briggs was supposed to be involved in the contest, exploding pumpkins in the Florida winter, and shit pickle gate. Jack-O centers around a pumpkin creature created by a wizard being released Halloween night. The Pumpkin Man is set on killing the Kelly family and anyone who gets in the way. The youngest Kelly, 10 year old Sean, is the only one who can stop Mr. Pumpkin from killing them all. The movie is disjointed and chock full of odd cameos from horror icons. Cameron Mitchell and John Carradine have posthumous roles as a TV show host and a wizard, Brinke Stevens and Dawn Wildsmith play sorceresses, and Linea Quiggly is the sympathetic babysitter. Fred Olen Ray was worried about having so many clips in the film, saying they’re touching on Plan 9 From Outer Space fame, but Jack-O sits in a different category of cheesy old films.  It's rough around the edges, but there's something about the film's earnest approach to Halloween, bizarre performances, and homemade atmosphere that has kept people coming back to it. These days, Jack-O is remembered as one of those strange little horror films that found its audience long after its original release. From weird toaster deaths to terrible haunted houses, Jack-O is a perfect Halloween treat.  Follow Video Vestige 🦋 https://linktr.ee/videovestigepodcast?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio Support us on Ko-fi! https://ko-fi.com/videovestigepodcast?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio If you like this episode please rate us and leave a comment of your thoughts! The Devils (1971)

In this episode hosts Diana and Audrey cover the incredible film The Devils (1971) in celebration of the 4k theatrical release by Warner Brothers Clockwork. Ken Russell’s The Devils is a historical drama, based on the real life Loudun possessions in France. The film follows Urbain Grandier (Oliver Reed), an influential priest whose opposition to royal authority puts him at against the Crown and Catholic Church. When Sister Jeanne (Vanessa Redgrave), the mother superior of a local convent, accuses him of bewitching the nuns, her allegations become a means for his political enemies to destroy him. The film displays religious mass hysteria, sexual repression and political persecution. We witness Grandier’s downfall as a relationship between institutional power, desire and religious hypocrisy. With heavy implications that challenges the authority of both Church and state. The Devils has had a tumultuous past with censorship and portions of the film were lost media. There are key scenes, including the desecration of a crucifix, that are pivotal to the plot but have been unseen by the public for decades. Even without these moments, the film still stirred up controversy, being banned in multiple countries and disavowed by the Vatican. Hosts Diana and Audrey cover the history of the production, why so much of the film was cut, and the differences between the censored version and the directors cut. They also cover the real history behind the Loudun possessions, the prolific production designer Derek Jarman, the incredible composer Peter Maxwell Davies, and talk about Ken Russell’s life leading up to the creation of The Devils. Go see the film while it’s still in theatres and join Audrey and Diana on a deep dive into this masterpiece of a film on this week’s episode of Video Vestige. Thanks for tuning in! The Scooby-Doo Project (1999)

“In October 1999, four teenaged sleuths and their Great Dane got lost in the woods while in search of a mystery. This is their story.” This week, as spooky season begins to ramp up, our hosts Diana and Audrey discuss the cult classic Blair Witch Project spoof The Scooby-Doo Project. Originally released as bumpers, Cartoon Network commissioned the short film to be included in a Halloween Marathon in 1999. The compilation of bumpers tells the story of the Scooby Gang investigating rumors about the haunted woods nearby, in a small town. The gang interviews real locals, eventually investigating and camping in the woods ending up lost. Presented in a found-footage style, with live-action footage and the Mystery Gang remaining in their traditional 2D animation. As Fred, Daphne, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo prepare to investigate a monster in the haunted woods nearby, Velma announces her decision to document the adventure with a handheld digital camera. Then the special presents the Scooby-Doo version of the iconic Blair Witch Project. Audrey and Diana discuss the low budget and ambitious making of this special, our love-hate relationship with Scrappy Doo, The Blair Witch Project's legacy and the film’s most memorable spoofs over the years. Lots of Zoinks, Ruh-rohs and Jinkies ahead so thanks for tuning in! Resident Evil (2026) & The Video Games' Lore | Part 2

This week we’re talking about Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil (2026)! Diana is a longtime fan of the games while Audrey went into the movie with basically no Resident Evil knowledge. We talk about Cregger’s take on the franchise, Raccoon City, and the core game lore of Resident Evil 2 and 3, including T, G, and the Las Plagas virus. Then we get into our initial thoughts on the movie and its atmospheric, high stress first 30 minutes. We compare Bryan’s reluctant protagonist energy to Leon and Ethan Winters, discuss whether Bryan’s whole journey is secretly about becoming a father, and debate the movie’s divisive ending. We also discuss the creature design, practical effects, comedy’s place in horror, and whether this entry works better as a Resident Evil adaptation or as a standalone survival horror movie. George A. Romero’s Lost Resident Evil & The Video Games’ Lore | Part 1

For this episode, Diana and Audrey break down the origins of Resident Evil. They begin with Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Sweet Home, both the 1989 film and the Famicom game, which paved the way for the Shinji Mikami & Tokuro Fujiwara's development of the original Resident Evil. Next we take Diana’s 101 Resident Evil lore class, covering Lord Oswell E. Spencer, the Umbrella Corporation, the T-Virus, and the characters and plot of the first Resident Evil game. From there we move on to the big screen; we look at the early attempts to bring Resident Evil to film, including the Constantin Film rejected scripts, George A. Romero’s Biohazard: Resident Evil 2 trailer and his unmade Resident Evil screenplay. And maybe some Wesker and Chris shipping. To be continued...
