EPISODE 2: Microplastics & the Gut Microbiome

Let’s talk about your gut microbiome. This is the ecosystem of bacteria that helps regulate digestion, inflammation, and even mood. Emerging research shows that microplastics can disrupt this system. They can reduce beneficial bacteria and shift the balance toward more inflammatory species. This is what we call dysbiosis. And dysbiosis doesn’t stay in the gut. It shows up as bloating, irregular bowel movements, fatigue, and even mood changes. Now—this research is still early, mostly lab and animal studies. But the pattern is consistent. When the microbiome is disrupted, the entire system feels it. Next—we’re going deeper into what happens to the gut lining itself. https://www.optimantra.com/optimus/patient/patientaccess/servicesall?pid=N0d1aDU4MFdMMlJCQmc5QmdJYzBZQT09&lid=TWt0aVhmYUtySUJaWk04RzJlZkJiQT09 https://us.fullscript.com/welcome/jde-guzman/store-start Sources: Detection of various microplastics in human stool: a prospective case series. What are microplastics

Today we’re starting with something most people don’t realize—microplastics are already inside the human body. They’ve been found in blood, stool, and even organs. Microplastics are tiny particles that come from the breakdown of everyday plastics—food containers, water bottles, packaging, and even clothing. We’re exposed through what we eat, drink, and breathe. This isn’t rare exposure. It’s constant. Now—does that mean immediate harm? Not exactly. Human research is still developing. But what we are seeing is that these particles interact with the gut—your largest interface with the external environment. And your gut isn’t just digestion. It’s immune regulation. Hormones. Brain signaling. So the real question isn’t just “are microplastics in the body?” It’s—what are they doing once they’re there? That’s what we’re diving into next. https://us.fullscript.com/welcome/jde-guzman https://www.optimantra.com/optimus/patient/patientaccess/servicesall?pid=N0d1aDU4MFdMMlJCQmc5QmdJYzBZQT09&lid=TWt0aVhmYUtySUJaWk04RzJlZkJiQT09 Sources: Detection of various microplastics in human stool: a prospective case series. Introduction to podcast

Hello, my name is Juvelyne Yap De Guzman, and I’m a board-certified Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner and Certified Functional and Nutritional Medicine Practitioner. I’ve spent about 30 years in healthcare, first as a registered nurse (20 years) and now as a nurse practitioner (9 years), caring for patients in primary care, internal medicine, nephrology, and mental health. Through all these years, one thing has become very clear to me—true healing doesn’t happen when we only treat symptoms. It happens when we take the time to understand the whole person. My passion for Functional Medicine is both professional and personal. I’ve seen my own family and my self-struggle with chronic illness, cancer, new-onset allergies, and menopause. Those experiences deepened my desire to help patients not just manage disease but truly thrive and enjoy a better quality of life. In my practice, I focus on uncovering the root causes of health concerns and partnering with you through personalized, compassionate care. I believe your story matters, your voice matters, and your health journey deserves time, respect, and understanding. Outside of medicine, my faith, my family, and my community keep me grounded and inspired. These values shape how I care for my patients—with empathy, integrity, and a genuine desire to help you live with more energy, clarity, and joy. I’m honored to walk alongside you on your journey to better health, and I look forward to supporting you every step of the way. https://us.fullscript.com/welcome/jde-guzman https://www.optimantra.com/optimus/patient/patientaccess/servicesall?pid=N0d1aDU4MFdMMlJCQmc5QmdJYzBZQT09&lid=TWt0aVhmYUtySUJaWk04RzJlZkJiQT09 Sources: Association of the functional medicine model of care with patient-reported health-related quality-of-life outcomes.
