We Drank the Kool-Aid: Colby and Dom on HYROX Boston

Coach Snowy sits down with Coach Colby and Coach Dom to talk about HYROX Boston from two very different seats. Colby raced doubles with his buddy Tim, his first competition in seven years, and shares how having a goal and a date gave his training a purpose again. He followed DSC’s small group HYROX programming, added slow zone 2 runs once or twice a week, and learned some hard lessons about patience, shin splints and how to progress your running when the gains are hard to see. Dom came as a spectator to cheer on Colby, Beth and other DSC members. He talks about the bumpin music, the hype tunnel and the MCs, and about chasing athletes from station to station for about 18,000 steps. By the end of the day he was thinking about signing up himself. Snowy adds what she saw as Head Judge at HYROX New York City and why HYROX does the spectator experience better than any race she’s done. Then it’s on to the DSC HYROX Sim on Sunday, October 25. DSC is NH’s premier HYROX training center, and the Sim brings the full race experience to Nashua: professional timing, top-of-the-line equipment, a full race course, spectator zones, a finish line experience and finisher patches. Race solo, grab a partner for doubles, or bring three friends for the relay. Colby and Daria are looking for relay teammates, so if you want to join him, reach out Info@dynamicsc.com Register for the Sim: http://app.usekilo.com/sales-portal/dynamic-strength-and-conditioning/71954bd9-0587-4f8e-af4d-cdcc65317bb4 New to DSC? HYROX Boston Wrap Up, Part 1: Sleds, Penalties and the Hype Tunnel

Coach Snowy sits down with Coach Kaitlyn, Coach Jake and Beth to talk through their weekend at HYROX Boston. Beth raced women’s doubles with Ashley, a former DSC nutrition coach, and they finished with no penalties despite a sled rope that kept drifting into the next lane. Kaity raced mixed doubles with Justin, her best friend since they were kids, which meant she pushed and pulled the men’s weights. She talks about the low point on the sleds, the comeback after burpee broad jumps, and why she wouldn’t have finished without her partner. Jake went solo for his second Boston. His training got knocked off track by illness this year, he got a surprise from his family in the stands, and he had more fun than last year anyway. Snowy also went solo, made some friends along the race, shares what she’d change next time and the one thing she's still salty about. We also get into pacing in an atmosphere built to make you go out too hard, rough cuts from the course layout, and why having friends and family right there beside the stations changes the whole day. Then it’s on to the DSC HYROX Sim on October 25: official timing, possible run splits, the Call Buckley Power Dome with an MC, a warm-up area from Renegade Movement and Performance, the Revolution Wellness Collective Recovery Zone, the BioRestore Nashua DJ and spectator zone, a DSC finisher patch and a surprise at the finish line. Never trained specifically for HYROX? You can still jump in, and a four-person relay team is the easiest way to start. A huge thank you to the sponsors who make the Sim possible: Buckley Law, our title sponsor, for bringing back the Call Buckley Power Dome; Renegade Movement and Performance for getting athletes warmed up and ready to race; Revolution Wellness Collective for running the Recovery Zone with soft tissue work and cupping; and BioRestore Nashua for the DJ and spectator zone. We’re grateful to have local businesses who show up for our community the way you do. 💪 In this episode: 00:00 Intros and why HYROX is so much fun to watch 01:34 Beth: going out conservative, and the sled pull rope mess 04:25 Kaity: mixed doubles, men’s weights and the hype tunnel 07:37 The sticky turf and the sled pull 10:11 Jake: training off the rails, penalties, and a surprise from Lainey in the stands 18:23 Snowy: trained to participate, not to race, and what she’d do differently 23:01 How the four-person relay works 24:07 What’s coming at the DSC HYROX Sim on October 25 26:54 Pacing lessons from the sidelines 30:17 Sponsor shout-outs and a quick correction Register for the Sim: http://app.usekilo.com/sales-portal/dynamic-strength-and-conditioning/71954bd9-0587-4f8e-af4d-cdcc65317bb4 New to DSC? Four Coaches. Zero Filter. Our Fitness and Nutrition Hot Takes

Coach Snowy pitched an idea to the coaches one afternoon. What if we did a podcast where we list out a bunch of hot takes and then all weigh in on them? Then she asked what they hear out on the floor all the time, the things people say around here with total confidence. Everybody had one, then everybody had three, and every single one came from a real conversation somebody had on the DSC floor. They were already arguing with each other before the list was even finished, which is roughly when it became clear this was going to be worth recording. Five minutes later, four coaches and one microphone. Coach Snowy, Coach Dom, Coach Ben and Coach McKenzie go through the list one at a time. Tempers flare. Lines get drawn. Alliances form and fall apart inside of ninety seconds. Nobody wins. What comes through most is that this is not a format. It is what the DSC coaching staff sounds like on their downtime, talking about this stuff, pushing back on each other, and enjoying it. The microphone did not create any of that. It just happened to be there. Listen for the takes you agree with, and then for the one that makes you want to argue back. Connect with DSCWebsite: https://www.dynamicsc.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/dynamicsncFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/DynamicStrengthandConditioning/ A note before you listen. The coaches on this episode are fitness professionals. One of us comes from a nursing background, but none of us are acting as your medical or nutrition provider here. Nothing you hear is medical advice, nutritional counseling, or a diagnosis, and none of it should take the place of a conversation with your provider, your registered dietitian, or anyone else on your care team. The opinions shared belong to each coach individually, not to Dynamic Strength and Conditioning as a business, and hot takes are called hot takes for a reason. We are here to think out loud, disagree with each other, and give you something to chew on. And if you want a program built around how you move, your goals and what your history is, come see us. That part we are qualified for!

John Olson on Food Noise, Fear, and the Day He "Saw Jesus"

John Olson has spent almost 20 years helping people change their lives through fitness. He's the co-founder of Individual Fitness, co-owner of two locations, and by every outward measure, the picture of health. What most people don't know is where he started. John was the "fat kid" in school. As a young adult, he was overweight, an alcoholic, and a smoker. He didn't grow up an athlete. He didn't walk into the gym confident. His story began the way so many of our members' stories begin, with a moment of reckoning. In John's words, he "saw Jesus." A near-death experience (or what he believed was one at the time) cracked something open, and he decided to try. You'll hear in this episode that what worked for him was one small step at a time. No big overhaul, no big transformation. What Daria and John unpack in this conversation: The moment John knew something had to change — and why fear, not motivation, was the first moverHow he started (spoiler: not with a six-week challenge or a punishing plan)What "food noise" actually is, why so many people feel ashamed of it, and why John still battles it todayThe practical techniques he uses to quiet the noise and stay on track — the ones he shares with clients tooWhy walking into a gym is one of the hardest first steps, and what he wishes every intimidated new member knewWhat almost 20 years in the industry has taught him about coaching, community, and staying human through it all This episode will resonate with anyone who has ever felt afraid to start, ashamed of where they are, or exhausted by the mental battle around food. John is proof that the story doesn't end where it starts — and that the fight doesn't fully go away, but it does get workable. Where to find Johnny: You can train with Johnny right here at DSC. He coaches Recharge once a month, and every Saturday he leads the Hyrox training camp. You can also find him at his Individual Fitness location in Concord. Come meet the man behind the story.
