The Shame of Falling Behind | Timelines, Rejection & Becoming

What happens when the person you thought you would become doesn’t look like the person you are right now? Lately, I’ve been thinking about shame. Not just the obvious kind, but the quieter kind that makes you question yourself when your life doesn’t look the way you thought it would. The kind that shows up when your friends are getting jobs, getting married, making money, and reaching milestones, while you feel like you’re still trying to figure out life after school. For me, shame became tangled up with my identity. I had always seen myself as ambitious, confident and capable of talking my way through almost anything. But after experiencing job rejections, I started questioning that version of myself. Instead of trying again, I retreated. And eventually, I realised that I wasn’t just taking a break. I was protecting myself from being rejected again. And that protection started spilling into everything else: my career, my creativity, my podcast, my writing, even my friendships. In this episode, I’m reflecting on what shame has taught me about identity, comparison, rejection, money, friendship and the pressure to be “on track” by a certain age. I’m also learning that not every achievement has to be visible to count. Sometimes the biggest things we accomplish are internal: learning to communicate better, setting boundaries, becoming more honest with ourselves, choosing not to abandon ourselves, or simply continuing to become. Maybe shame has been telling you a story about who you are, too. So this is a reminder that you are not your rejection. You are not your timeline. You are not the things you have or don’t have. You are a person experiencing life, learning, changing and becoming. And maybe that deserves to count for more than we let it. Welcome back to Sacred Self Studio, a space for honest conversations about what makes us human and what it means to realise our potential. I don’t have this figured out, but I’m learning out loudly.

    The Pressure of Being Something

When did you start feeling like you had to be something? In this episode of Sacred Self Studio, Ntando Pretty Moyo reflects on the quiet pressure of identity and the need to label ourselves in order to feel understood. What begins as a search for belonging can slowly turn into a performance, where we try to live up to definitions that were never fully ours. Through a personal and honest journey, Ntando shares her experience of moving through different identities, from straight to bisexual, to asexual, to lesbian, and eventually embracing queerness as a space of freedom rather than restriction. This is not just a conversation about sexuality. It is a deeper reflection on how labels shape the way we see ourselves, the expectations we carry, and the ways we may limit our own growth without realising it. This episode invites you to pause and consider where in your life you may be performing who you think you are, instead of exploring who you are becoming. If you have ever questioned your identity, felt pressure to fit into a label, or struggled to reconcile who you are with who you think you should be, this conversation will meet you where you are. In this episode, we explore: The psychology behind identity and labels How labels can create both belonging and limitation The emotional impact of trying to be “enough” of an identity Letting go of rigid definitions to reconnect with yourself Navigating self discovery with honesty and compassion This is a space to return to yourself. If this episode resonates with you, follow Sacred Self Studio for more honest conversations on identity, self discovery, mental health, and spirituality.
