    On September 26, 1983, Vladimir Titov and Gennady Strekalov sat atop a fueled Soyuz-U rocket bound for Salyut 7. Less than a minute before launch, fire broke out at the base of the booster. Ground controllers had only seconds to understand the danger, issue the abort command, and trust a violent little machine built for the worst day of its life. The launch escape system fired at T-minus forty-eight seconds, tearing the crewed spacecraft away moments before the rocket exploded on the pad.     In April 1967, Vladimir Komarov launched aboard Soyuz 1, a spacecraft meant to prove the Soviet Union was still leading the race to the Moon. The mission began with prestige and ended in wreckage. A solar panel failed. The spacecraft struggled with attitude control. Communications broke into fragments. The planned rendezvous with Soyuz 2 was canceled, sparing three more cosmonauts from the same uncertain machine. Komarov fought the crippled spacecraft through an improvised return and survived reentry. Then the main parachute failed to deploy.
