    Fear, Faith, and Punishment

In Episode 8 of The Deconstruction Room, we explore one of the most powerful emotions that shaped our faith growing up: fear. For many of us, fear wasn't just an occasional part of our spiritual lives—it was the foundation. Fear of God. Fear of punishment. Fear of hell. Fear of asking questions. Fear of making the wrong decision and losing God's favor. In this episode, we unpack how fear-based teaching influenced our understanding of God, ourselves, and our relationship with faith. We share our personal experiences, the messages we heard growing up, and how we've learned to separate fear from love as we've continued our deconstruction journeys. This conversation isn't about dismissing the seriousness of faith or denying accountability. It's about asking whether fear was ever meant to be the primary motivation for following God and what happens when love begins to replace fear. In this episode, we discuss:• Fear of God versus reverence for God• Fear of hell and eternal punishment• Fear-based preaching and church culture• The emotional impact of shame and guilt• How fear affected our relationship with God• Scriptures that shaped our understanding of fear and love• Learning to ask questions without fear• Finding peace beyond fear-based faith If you've ever struggled with anxiety over your salvation, worried that one mistake would separate you from God, or felt trapped by fear instead of drawn by love, you're not alone. We hope this conversation reminds you that healing is possible and that faith doesn't have to be built on fear. Pull up a chair. We've saved you a spot. Speaking in Tongues: Faith, Fear, and the Questions We Couldn't Ask - Part 2

In Episode 7 of The Deconstruction Room, we continue one of our most requested conversations with Part 2 of Speaking in Tongues, and this time, we're joined by a very special guest: our mom. Growing up in the same Pentecostal tradition, our mom experienced many of the same teachings we did, but through a very different lens. Together, we have an honest, respectful conversation about speaking in tongues, the baptism of the Holy Spirit, church traditions, and how our beliefs have evolved over the years. Rather than debating or trying to convince one another who's right, we create space for different perspectives, personal experiences, and the difficult questions that many people have been afraid to ask. In this episode, we discuss:• Our mom's experiences growing• Speaking in tongues from different perspectives• Scripture, tradition, and personal experience• How our beliefs have changed over time• Respecting one another despite theological differences• The importance of listening before judging• Why honest conversations matter Whether you agree with us, disagree with us, or find yourself somewhere in the middle, our hope is that this episode encourages compassion, curiosity, and meaningful dialogue. Healing doesn't always come from having all the answers—it often begins by feeling safe enough to ask the questions. We're incredibly grateful to our mom for joining us and sharing her heart with honesty and vulnerability. Pull up a chair. We've saved you a spot. Speaking in Tongues: Faith, Fear, and the Questions We Couldn't Ask - Part 1

In Episode 6 of The Deconstruction Room, we dive into one of the most controversial topics in Pentecostal Christianity: speaking in tongues. For those of us raised in charismatic churches, speaking in tongues wasn't just another doctrine—it was often presented as evidence of a deeper spiritual experience or even a requirement for the fullness of faith. In this episode, we unpack our personal experiences, the teachings we grew up with, and how our perspectives have changed over time. This conversation isn't about mocking anyone's beliefs or telling people what they should believe. We recognize that sincere Christians hold different views on this topic. Our goal is simply to share our experiences, ask honest questions, and examine how certain teachings impacted us personally. In this episode, we discuss:• Growing up around speaking in tongues• What we were taught about the baptism of the Holy Spirit• The pressure to speak in tongues• Fear, expectation, and emotional experiences• Scriptures that shaped our beliefs• Questions that led us to reevaluate the doctrine• Different Christian perspectives on speaking in tongues• Where each of us stands today For many people, this topic carries deep emotions—both positive and painful. Whether speaking in tongues has strengthened your faith, left you with unanswered questions, or contributed to your own deconstruction journey, we hope this conversation encourages thoughtful reflection rather than fear. Leaving the Church

In Episode 5 of The Deconstruction Room, we tackle a question many people are asking right now: Why are so many people leaving the church? In this honest and vulnerable conversation, we discuss the growing disconnect between people and organized religion, the pain that has caused many to walk away, and the reasons each of us ultimately stepped away from church as we once knew it. This episode is not about attacking the church or condemning people who still attend. We recognize there are healthy churches and sincere believers doing meaningful work. But we also believe it’s important to talk honestly about the hurt, disillusionment, and spiritual wounds that have led so many people to leave. We open up about our own experiences, the moments that shifted our perspectives, and the deeper issues within church culture that became impossible to ignore. In this episode, we discuss:• Why so many people are leaving the church• Religious trauma and spiritual burnout• Toxic church culture and leadership failures• Fear-based teaching and shame-driven theology• The impact of politics within modern Christianity• Why many people feel safer outside church walls• Our personal reasons for leaving• What faith and spirituality look like now For many, leaving the church isn’t about abandoning God, it’s about walking away from environments that caused harm. Sometimes stepping away is what creates space for healing, clarity, and growth. Whether you’ve left the church, are questioning your place in it, or are trying to better understand why so many are walking away, this conversation is for you. You are not alone. Pull up a chair. Pilot

Welcome to the very first episode of The Deconstruction Room. We’re three people raised in religious culture trying to figure out what we still believe, what we don’t, and how to heal from everything in between. In this introductory episode, we share our backgrounds, explain what deconstruction means to us, and create the foundation for the conversations ahead. We discuss religious trauma, the difference between healthy faith communities and harmful religious environments, and how fear-based teachings can shape our beliefs and identities. Drawing from our experiences growing up in the Assemblies of God tradition, we explore some of the questions, fears, and church culture that led us to begin examining the faith we inherited. This isn’t a debate. It’s not about attacking faith or telling anyone what they should believe. It’s about honesty, healing, and creating a safe space where questions are welcome and doubt isn’t demonized. In this episode, we talk about: • What religious trauma is and how it affects people • The difference between deconstructing and deconverting • Fear, shame, and church culture • Weird church rules and childhood questions • The beliefs that impacted us most • Where we stand with faith today • What we hope listeners take away from this journey Whether you’re still a Christian, no longer identify with faith, or are somewhere in between, you’re welcome here. Healing can be messy, but it is possible. Be sure to subscribe and join us every Wednesday as each host shares their personal story, what led them to deconstruct, and where they are in their faith journey today.
