Beyond Small Talk - What Men Don't Say

Sean

Beyond Small Talk is a space for honest conversations about what men often carry but rarely say out loud. Hosted by Sean, the podcast explores pressure, relationships, purpose, faith, emotional honesty, and what it means to live through life instead of escaping it. Through personal stories, conversations with guests, and reflections on books, psychology, recovery, and real life, each episode aims to go beyond surface level and explore the challenges, questions, and tensions that shape who we become. Not a place for perfect answers, just a place for honest conversations.

Episode 4. The Three Hardest Things for Men to Say

What happens when understanding why we are the way we are still isn’t enough to help us change? In this episode of Beyond Small Talk, Sean sits down with Matt Wenger to wrestle with some of the conversations many men struggle to have out loud. Matt begins with three statements he believes are particularly difficult for men to say: “I’m scared. I’m lonely. I need help.” From there, the conversation moves through childhood, masculinity, isolation, recovery, resentment, nervous-system responses, and the difficult gap between understanding ourselves and actually living differently. We explore why insight alone may not create change, why stress can send us back to our “factory settings,” and why curiosity, compassion, honesty, and real relationships can matter as much as understanding our past. Matt also offers a powerful reminder that healing is rarely a straight line—and that returning to an old pattern does not have to mean returning to square one. Perhaps the question underneath the entire conversation is simple: How do I become more capable of observing myself before I automatically react? And when that awareness finally arrives, what do I choose to do with it?
