    Genesis Chapter 11 Part 3: Terah Set Out for Canaan and Settled in Haran

    Most people read the genealogy at the end of Genesis 11 and skip it. They should not. Because buried inside this genealogy are four details that set up everything that happens in the rest of the book of Genesis. A son who dies before his father in Ur of the Chaldeans. A wife introduced with one devastating sentence. Sarai was barren. She had no child. A father who set out for Canaan and stopped in Haran. And a death notice that ends the chapter. Terah died in Haran. Not in Canaan. Not in the place he set out for. In the place where he stopped. Two hundred and five years old. And he never made it. That is one of the saddest lines in the book of Genesis. Not because Terah was a wicked man. But because he aimed at the right destination and settled short of it. He started the journey someone else would have to finish. And that is the lesson most of us need more than we realize.     Genesis Chapter 11 Part 2: The Lord Came Down What God Said When He Saw the Tower of Babel

    They built a tower whose top was supposed to reach heaven. And God had to come down to see it. And then God said something. And what He said is one of the most revealing divine assessments in the entire book of Genesis. Behold they are one people. They have the same language. And now nothing they purpose to do will be impossible for them. God is not alarmed. He is not threatened. He is not scrambling to protect His throne. He is making a calm, sovereign, comprehensive assessment of what is happening and what it means. And then He acts. Not with a flood. Not by striking the builders dead. Not with fire from heaven. He confuses their language. Surgical. Precise. The minimum intervention necessary to accomplish the maximum correction. And the most sophisticated construction project in the ancient world ends because the workers stopped understanding each other.     Genesis Chapter 11 part 1: They Built a Tower to Reach God He Had to Come Down Just to See It

    They said come let us build a tower whose top will reach into heaven. And God had to come down to even see it. That is not a small detail. That is Moses making one of the most important theological statements in the entire book of Genesis. However high humanity builds God is higher. However impressive the tower it does not move God from His throne. However unified the effort it does not threaten the sovereignty of the One who sits above the circle of the earth. But in this lesson we discover that the Tower of Babel is not primarily a story about a building. It is a story about a decision. Four verses. Three declarations. And the most complete picture of human pride in all of early Genesis. Come let us make bricks. Come let us build a city. Let us make a name for ourselves. Lest we be scattered. Every one of those phrases is a theological statement about the direction of the human heart when it organizes itself around anything other than God.     Genesis Chapter 10 Part 2: The Line of Shem and the Road to Abraham

    Most people read Genesis 10 and see a list of unpronounceable names. They are missing one of the most important chapters in the entire Bible. In this lesson we finish the table of nations and arrive at the line that matters most for the rest of the story. The line of Shem. And buried inside that line is a name that changes everything. Eber. From Eber comes the word Hebrew. From Eber comes the identity of God’s covenant people. From Eber comes the line that leads through Peleg, through Reu, through Serug, through Nahor, through Terah, all the way to a man named Abram who will become Abraham. The genealogy of Jesus runs directly through this chapter. Luke 3 traces the family line of Christ back through every name in Genesis 10. The table of nations is not background noise. It is the family tree of the Savior of the world. We also look at one of the most intriguing phrases in all of early Genesis. Peleg, whose name means division, who lived in the days when the earth was divided. What does that mean? We lay out the two major interpretive positions honestly and let you decide. And we step back and look at Genesis 10 as a whole and answer four questions Moses is answering with this entire chapter. Does God govern the nations? Is all humanity one family?
