Episode 6 – UK Vet Nurses Worldwide, India & fire services

In this episode of Between the Kennels, we’re joined live by the incredible Jackie and Holly from UK Vet Nurses Worldwide — and what a first caller to the podcast they were! Founded by Jackie two years ago, UK Vet Nurses Worldwide was created to give veterinary professionals the opportunity to travel to areas where access to veterinary education, resources and established standards can be limited. By sharing knowledge, skills and experience, the charity aims to help improve veterinary care and, most importantly, patient welfare around the world. This episode is particularly close to home for our host Ben, who two years ago travelled through South America with his partner Dan, volunteering and gaining his own experience of veterinary nursing overseas. So, getting the chance to hear about the work Jackie and Holly are doing was a brilliant opportunity to reflect on just how much these experiences can teach us as veterinary professionals. Jackie and Holly are currently in India, staying with Manali Strays and working alongside Mission Rabies, helping with one of the biggest challenges facing both animals and communities: rabies prevention. From vaccinating some of the most challenging dogs to reach, to supporting education and awareness, their work forms part of the wider global effort to eliminate dog-mediated human rabies. The World Health Organization's goal is to achieve zero human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030, and achieving this requires sustained vaccination coverage in dog populations, alongside education, surveillance and access to post-exposure treatment. We chat about their experiences, the realities of volunteering overseas, the challenges they face on the ground, and why sharing knowledge across borders can make such a difference. A huge thank you to Jackie and Holly for joining us — and for the genuinely incredible work they are doing. 🐾🌎
