Rosie Jones: Taskmaster, her jumpsuit 'comedy uniform', and Edinburgh Fringe

What happens when you stop dressing to blend in and start dressing entirely for yourself? In this episode of Who Are You (Wearing?), Alice Cruickshank is joined by comedian, author and BAFTA-nominated actor Rosie Jones. Known for Taskmaster, The Last Leg, Live at the Apollo, Out of Order and Pushers, Rosie is also the proud owner of around 50 jumpsuits (and counting!) What begins with a mutual appreciation of colourful fashion becomes a much bigger conversation about confidence, identity and being seen. Rosie talks about how her disability and sexuality have influenced her relationship with fashion, and the journey from wearing "cute dresses" to blend in to embracing bold, unapologetic looks, including latex on the cover of Gay Times and at the TV BAFTAs. Rosie and Alice also get into the particular pressures female comedians face around their appearance, and what it means to be judged not just on your comedy, but on how you look while doing it. There's plenty of Taskmaster chat too, including the element of her outfit that was deemed too much for television, before Rosie talks about her new Edinburgh Fringe show, I Can't Tell What She's Saying, and why the Fringe has become one of her favourite places in the world. Funny, frank and full of fashion chat, this is a conversation about finding your style, finding your confidence and deciding that being yourself is much more fun than trying to fit in. In this episode: Why Rosie loves jumpsuits How disability and sexuality have shaped her style Going from "cute dresses" to latex at the TV BAFTAs The pressure on female comedians to look a certain way The Taskmaster outfit that was too controversial for TV Life as a comedian, actor, author and television personality Why Edinburgh Fringe is so special to Rosie Her new show, I Can't Tell What She's Saying See Rosie at the Fringe Rosie Jones: I Can't Tell What She's Saying 4pm | Cabaret Bar, Pleasance Courtyard Throughout the Edinburgh Fringe About the podcast Who Are You (Wearing?) is the fashion podcast that's not really about clothes. Darren Brownlie: River City, 90s fashion memories, and bringing Crocodile Rock to theEdinburgh Fringe

Can the clothes we wore growing up tell the story of who we became? In this episode of Who Are You (Wearing?), Alice Cruickshank is joined by actor Darren Brownlie, best known for playing Mikey Duffy in River City and as a familiar face in Glasgow's King's Theatre, Glasgow pantomime. Darren is now starring in Crocodile Rock at the Edinburgh Fringe: a moving and entertaining one-man play with music exploring what it was like growing up gay on a Scottish island in the 1990s before having life changed forever by a visiting drag queen. Using fashion as a starting point, Darren and Alice take a nostalgic trip through 90s and 00s style, debating the worst shoes ever made, reminiscing about school fashion trends and revisiting the nicknames Darren collected over the years, from "Darren Broon-shoes" at school to "DD" (Double Denim) today. They then dive into Scottish soap River City, and changing times now the show has been cancelled. Darren shares the story of how he landed the role of Mikey Duffy, and how as an actor the character and your sense of self are always linked. The conversation then turns to Crocodile Rock and the deeply personal experiences that helped shape the production, from Darren as well as the writer Andy McGregor. Darren reflects on growing up gay in Paisley during the era of Section 28, how those memories influenced the play, and why he believes optimism has carried him through every stage of his life and career. They also chat about the joy of pantomime, Darren's favourite costumes over the years, and why he's more than happy to do the weekly shop in sequins and a pussybow blouse if the occasion calls for it. Funny, thoughtful and deeply heartfelt, this episode is about identity, resilience, nostalgia and finding the confidence to wear exactly what feels like you.
