Miguel Alcubierre on Star Trek, Black Holes and Warp Drives

Hey Nerds! It's time for something new! I've started a discussion series (ok come on it's totally a podcast...) where I'll be speaking with scientists, artists, communicators, writers and just all types of nerds from all over pop culture. This is episode one with Professor Miguel Alcubierre. In 1994 while working on his PhD at Cardiff, Miguel was inspired by Star Trek to write a paper about a potential spacetime curvature. He called it a 'warp bubble' and the rest, as they say, is history. But while the warp bubble paper is interesting to us nerds, his extensive work throughout his career makes him the perfect person to ask what General Relativity is really about and to help us properly understand what it actually means to have a 'solution to Einstein's Field Equations'. I'm so excited that Miguel agreed to this and am genuinely honoured to have him as my first guest. I hope you all enjoy the episode. Lots more fun conversations are on the way. Stay Nerdy! About Me: My name is Abi James and I go by Pop Culture Scientist online. I've spent the past 5 years making videos explaining the science that we see in fiction and pop culture and finally decided it was time to reach out to some experts to get closer to the source. I have a bachelors and masters degree in Physics and am a final year DPhil candidate in Physics at the University of Oxford. My research is in plasma acceleration where I use lasers to probe plasma wakefields and try to see what's happening inside. Below is a list of papers, books or videos on topics that we talked about that you might find interesting. All papers linked are the open access version so are freely available to all. -The warp drive: hyper-fast travel within general relativity - Miguel Alcubierre, Class.
