Same-Sex Attracted and a Christian. Now What?

Dennis Belkofer

Welcome to Same-Sex Attracted and a Christian. Now what? My name is Dennis Belkofer.  The title is my autobiography in a nutshell, because I know what it's like to be same-sex attracted and a Christian, and ask, "How do I align it with God's moral laws and creation ordinances of gender, sexuality, and marriage?"  And it's the same "now what" asked by countless Christians, not only those who are same-sex attracted.  I've recorded this podcast to share my conversion and how I was taught to biblically deal with the sinful desires that attracted me to a man, after years of confusion and struggling to find the answer. What I was taught applies to all Christians, because "all" Christians are baited by sinful desires (Galatians 5:17). I pray that this podcast will be a blessing to others, and above all, glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. From my heart to yours, Dennis.

I Knew Jesus Forgave Me of the Sins I Committed Under the Name Same-Sex Attraction. But the Regret for Committing those Sins Haunted me. Not Anymore. If You Identify, this Episode is for You

On May 25th, I recorded "Taking a Beloved Scripture out of Context: John 3:16" (check it out). That's what I had done with Romans 8:28: "God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." I stopped there, as I had done with John 3:16.  I should have interpreted 8:28 in light of Romans 8:1 and 8:29-39.  Synthesizing these verses as a whole, and all of Romans Chapter 8, taught me how to let go of my regret. If you are haunted by regret, please drench yourself in all of Romans 8. God takes our regret and works it for good: the freedom Jesus' blood paid for and for His glory. Don't shortchange yourself of what Jesus has done for you, as I used to do.  Does it hurt Him? It must. Because He loves us. Please check out "What Gave me the Audacity to Record this Podcast?" - especially if God is calling you to minister to His church, or you are there already. It's the forerunner to this episode. I believe living our lives in Romans 8 is the authenticity people sense coming from the pulpit, pastoral care, what they read in Christian books and blogs, and what they hear on Christian podcasts.  If the church ever needed authentic biblical ministry from those who live it in their personal lives, now is the day. My Eyes would Glaze Over when I Read Galatians 5:16: "But I Say Walk by the Spirit and You Will not Carry out the Desire of the Flesh." And I Wondered: How do I do that? Until...

It's true. Galatians 5:16 puzzled me for decades. This episode is the abridged account of "until" - how I was taught to "walk by the Spirit." I recorded the unabridged version in the May 3-5 episodes, "How I Learned to Deal with Same-Sex Attraction Biblically." In a nutshell, I was taught the core doctrine of sanctification - how a born-again believer grows in Christ - a doctrine that the Evangelical Church has almost forgotten. I believe it is why there is so much sin in it. Much of what I share in this and the unabridged version, I gleaned from the following books: "The Bondage of the Will" (Martin Luther); "The Mortification of Sin" (Puritan John Owen); "The Enemy Within" (Kris Lundgaard); "Hacking Agag to Pieces" (John MacArthur); "Voices from the Past, A Year of Puritan Devotional Readings" (published by Banner of Truth). I highly recommend that you purchase them.  They explain how to walk by the Spirit. Note: "The Bondage of the Will" is a conversation between Erasmus, a Christian humanist, and Martin Luther, the father of the Reformation. Erasmus avoided a theology that pointed to man's sin and God's judgment of it because it spawned controversies that caused divisions in the church. God's truth does that. Read Luke 12: 49-53. Luther, on the other hand, taught that there is no gospel apart from teaching about man's sin and God's judgment, the reasons why God sent Jesus to die on the cross and satisfy (propitiate) His wrath against sinners (Eph. 2:1-3, 1 John 2:2). Erasmus' theology is representative of much of today's church, in need of reformation. Luther's call for unadulterated biblical theology, the Reformation of more than 500 years ago, is representative of the churches today that are keeping the purity of the gospel alive: confession of sin, repentance (turning from it), and faith in the finished work of Christ that leads to eternal life, an authentic born-again experience.  "The Bondage of the Will" is not an easy read- but well worth it. "The 7 Levels of Intimacy with God (why few Christians Ever Reach the Final One)" - a YouTube video by God Built

During my time alone with God this morning, I decided to go to YouTube to see if a Christian teaching video would be offered. True to YouTube's algorithm, which selects videos based on the types of videos you choose in the past, "The 7 Levels of Intimacy with God (why few Christians Ever Reach the Final One)" was available. Amazingly, I found it to be the timeline of my Christian life. I am eager to suggest that you check out the video yourself. It emphasizes spending time alone with God and taking off our masks when we do: to be honest about our sins, worries, fears, and the anger we feel when our needs and prayers aren't answered. David did that in the Psalms, but he always ended with worshipping God and extoling His love and compassion. Following David's example is not an option for us.  This episode takes you to Psalm 139 to encourage your honesty with God, because He knows us better than we know ourselves.   Isaiah 57:15 is another encouragement. I also suggest you check out what I've recorded that complements "The 7 Levels...." June 16:  "Are you Jealous About Spending Time with God..." May 23: "Wanting what God Does for You More than Wanting Him..."  April 2: "The Joy of Being a Closet Christian." And I highly recommend, almost insist, that you check out YouTube's "The Secret of Men who Walk Alone with God." It unpacks what it is like living in level 7 - and what it takes to get there.  Email: dennymrb@outlook.com

A Glimpse into My Everyday Life. And a Look into the Role Ephesians 2:10 Plays in the Life of a Born-Again Believer in Jesus - and How I Experience it in My Everyday Life

I have endeavored to immerse the entirety of this podcast - Christian and Same-Sex Attracted. Now What" - in God's word, because I've immersed my life in the core doctrines that define Christianity, found only in His word.  What you hear in this podcast is what I implement in my life. I've recorded "this" episode to give a glimpse of my everyday life, the person Dennis Belkofer lives, as a complement to the biblical truth I present; in other words, I don't live in a make-believe "ivory tower" dispensing Bible verses from a spiritual slot machine. I've also recorded this episode to focus on Ephesians 2:10, a verse that I overlooked for decades: "For we are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them." Several months ago, I began praying over that verse and asking for God's leading to make it a reality in my life. I share examples from my everyday life as proof that God is answering my prayer. I also share an example of how the Lord used me 45 years ago, long before I began to realize the importance of Ephesians 2:10: God doesn't wait for us to "get everything right" before He uses us. If you are a born-again believer, I encourage you to make Ephesians 2:10 a focus in your life, because God prepared beforehand the good works for all born-again believers to walk in - and they are tailored to the individual, even their personality. I also encourage you to check out the YouTube video "The Secret of Men who Walk Alone with God." In essence, it's the secret of abiding in Christ (John 15: 4-7). Spending time alone with God is foundational to abiding in Him in our everyday lives, which opens the door to "walking" in the good works He prepared beforehand.  Email: dennymrb@outlook.com
