Psychotic. Murderer. Evil. Those are some of the words used to describe Lindsay Clancy. But in this episode of Heal Yeah!, we’re asking a much harder question: what if understanding what happened is just as important as condemning the outcome? Three children lost their lives, and nothing about this conversation minimizes that devastating reality. Instead, Mallory is joined by Lisa, who has a background in psychology and served as a paralegal, for an unfiltered discussion about the questions surrounding the Clancy case—and what it may reveal about the way we understand postpartum mental illness, women’s health, motherhood, medical advocacy, and the healthcare system itself. Together, they explore the critical differences between postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis, the role that sleep deprivation, hormonal changes, mental health treatment, medication, and support systems can play during the postpartum period, and why so many women may be afraid to admit when something feels profoundly wrong. The conversation also goes beyond one case. Why is women’s health still so poorly understood? Why are women so often expected to push through pain, exhaustion, hormonal upheaval, and psychological distress? And when a patient says, “Something is wrong with me,” what happens when the people responsible for helping her don’t fully understand what they’re seeing? Mallory also shares her own recent experience of feeling unheard within the medical system, opening a larger conversation about trusting your body, asking questions, seeking second opinions, and becoming an active participant in your own healthcare. This episode is not about excusing tragedy. It is about refusing to learn nothing from it. Because if women are afraid to ask for help, if families don’t know what warning signs to look for, and if our medical system still has enormous gaps in its understanding of women’s bodies and minds, then the question becomes bigger than Lindsay Clancy: How many women have to become tragedies before women’s health becomes a priority? This episode contains discussion of child death, suicide, postpartum psychosis, mental illness, and other sensitive subjects. Listener discretion is advised.
