    Ep. 27: The Schoolhouse Panic: When Education Becomes the Enemy

    How textbook battles, history wars, and book bans turned the American classroom into a political battleground. Description What children learn has never been a neutral question in America. Long before today’s fights over banned books, classroom libraries, and history lessons, powerful people understood that controlling education meant influencing how the next generation understood the country, its history, and themselves. In this episode of Context & Conviction, we trace America’s education battles from the McGuffey Readers and their lessons about morality and obedience to the United Daughters of the Confederacy’s campaign to shape how the Civil War and slavery were taught. We examine Mildred Rutherford’s instructions for judging textbooks, the campaign against progressive educator Harold Rugg, the influence of state textbook decisions in places like Texas, and the modern movement to restrict books and classroom discussions. This is not about pretending that every concern raised by a parent is censorship. It is about recognizing a much older pattern. When education encourages students to question national myths, examine injustice, or listen to people whose stories were previously excluded, the classroom is often accused of becoming dangerous. But teaching an honest version of history is not an attack on America.     Ep. 26: The New Red Scare: When Fear Becomes a Political Weapon

    What happens when disagreement is no longer treated as disagreement, but as evidence that someone is dangerous? In this episode of Context & Conviction, we examine America’s history of turning political fear into public suspicion. From the Palmer Raids and the deportation of immigrants after World War I to congressional investigations, Hollywood blacklists, loyalty tests, and Senator Joseph McCarthy’s accusations, the Red Scares reached far beyond people who posed an actual threat. Careers were destroyed. Families were watched. Workers, artists, immigrants, civil-rights organizers, and ordinary citizens were pressured to prove that they were sufficiently “American.” In many cases, association became evidence, criticism became disloyalty, and silence became a form of survival. This episode is not an argument that national-security threats have never existed. It is an examination of what happens when fear moves faster than evidence and when political leaders discover that calling someone radical, subversive, or un-American can be more powerful than proving wrongdoing. Because the language may change, but the strategy remains familiar: create an enemy, exaggerate the danger, punish association, and convince the public that questioning authority is itself suspicious. The central lesson is not that every investigation is illegitimate. It is that a democracy becomes vulnerable when accusations replace evidence, political opposition is treated as disloyalty, and fear is used to convince the public that constitutional protections should only apply to people they already trust.     Ep. 25: The Black Panthers: When Feeding Children Was Called Dangerous

    In this episode of Context & Conviction, Steph takes a deeper look at the Black Panther Party beyond the headlines, fear, and political labels many of us were handed. The Black Panthers were not only known for armed self-defense and monitoring police brutality. They also built community “survival programs” that served real needs in Black neighborhoods, including free breakfast for children, food programs for families and elders, health clinics, legal aid, transportation, clothing distribution, education programs, and sickle cell testing. So why did feeding children become threatening? This episode explores the history of the Black Panther Party, the Ten-Point Program, the Free Breakfast for Children Program, COINTELPRO, FBI surveillance, Fred Hampton, and the deeper question of what happens when community care gets treated like a national security threat. This is not about pretending the Panthers were simple or perfect. It is about refusing to flatten history into fear. It is about asking why America has so often treated Black organization, Black protection, Black education, and Black mutual aid as something dangerous. Because when hungry children are fed and the government sees a threat, we have to ask what power is really afraid of.     Ep. 24: Guatemala 1954: When Fruit, Fear, and the CIA Overthrew a Democracy

    In 1954, Guatemala’s democratically elected president, Jacobo Árbenz, was overthrown after his government pushed land reform in a country where land was concentrated in the hands of a powerful few. His reforms affected major landowners, including the U.S.-based United Fruit Company, which held significant power and influence in Guatemala. What followed was Operation PBSUCCESS, a CIA-backed covert operation that helped remove Árbenz from power and bring Carlos Castillo Armas into leadership. The United States framed the intervention through Cold War fear and anti-communist language, but the deeper story is about land, poverty, corporate power, and what happens when democracy threatens profit. For poor and landless Guatemalans, land reform was not a political theory. It was survival. It meant food, dignity, and the possibility of a different future. But once reform was labeled dangerous, and once poverty could be framed as subversion, intervention became easier to justify. The consequences did not end in 1954. Guatemala’s internal armed conflict lasted from 1960 to 1996. More than 200,000 people were killed or disappeared, and Indigenous Maya communities were devastated. The human cost of this coup was carried by families, villages, workers, children, and generations who had to live with the aftermath. This episode asks a hard question: What do we call it when a nation says it is defending freedom while helping overthrow another country’s democracy?     Ep. 23: The Church Committee: When America Investigated Its Own Shadow Government

    In this episode of Context & Conviction, Steph breaks down one of the most important government investigations in American history: the Church Committee. In the 1970s, after years of secrecy, scandal, surveillance, and abuse of power, the United States Senate opened an investigation into the nation’s intelligence agencies. What they uncovered was not a conspiracy theory. It was documented history. The Church Committee investigated the CIA, FBI, NSA, IRS, and other parts of the intelligence system, exposing programs that spied on Americans, targeted activists, monitored political movements, disrupted lawful organizing, and operated with very little public accountability. This episode walks through what led to the investigation, what the committee found, why COINTELPRO matters, how figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and civil rights organizations were watched and targeted, and why government power must never be allowed to hide behind the language of “security” without accountability. This is not about hating America. It is about telling the truth because truth matters. As Christians, citizens, and human beings, we should care deeply about justice, transparency, abuse of power, and the protection of people’s rights. Because when a government can secretly decide who is dangerous, who gets watched, who gets disrupted, and who gets erased, the question is not only what happened back then.
