S1.E6: Stop Being the Defendant (The Five Whys)

Send us Fan Mail You didn't fail because you lack discipline. You failed because you never asked why. When you miss a guideline, the default move is to put yourself on trial — you're lazy, you don't really want this, you knew you'd quit. That's not a diagnosis. That's a shame spiral, and shame spirals don't produce fixes. Today we're replacing the trial with a mechanic's approach: open the hood, find the broken part, replace it. This week Erica breaks down the Five Whys — the root cause technique developed at Toyota and later folded into Six Sigma, the same methodology behind her own Green Belt from her years at Amazon. You'll learn how five whys in a row can turn "I missed my writing session" into the real, mechanical reason underneath it, why your zeros are data and not character indictments, and the difference between fixing everything at once and changing exactly one thing (only one of those actually tells you what worked). Plus: the one sentence to say out loud the next time you find your domain — "I don't have a motivation problem. I have a [insert yours] problem. And that can be fixed." Mentioned in this episode: the [Season Starter Workshop](https://bit.ly/4fw2hjo), live on August 8th (11am ET / 11am PT) — a 90-minute session to build the Anchor Goal, Daily Guidelines, and Weekly Scouting Report for the one goal you've been putting off. $197, workbook included. ericafiguresitout.com/workshop Prefer to talk it through one-on-one first? S1.E5: Stop Waiting to Feel Ready (The Best Self Trap)

Send us Fan Mail You don't need to feel ready. You need a decision made in advance. There's a version of you that you've been waiting to feel like — the one who wakes up early without complaining, who's got the budget and the meal prep and the sleep schedule all figured out. You're waiting to feel like that person before you start acting like her. That's the trap, and today we're dismantling it. This week Erica tells the story of a terrible training run — ten miles, 4:45am, zero motivation — and what it taught her about behavior change. You'll learn why motivation was never the variable, what people in long-term recovery know about building systems that don't depend on feeling ready, and the difference between a decision you make once and one you remake every single day (spoiler: only one of those is sustainable). Plus: a quick exercise to name the feeling you've been waiting for before you start the thing you keep putting off. Mentioned in this episode: the Season Starter Workshop, live on August 8th (11am ET / 11am PT) — a 90-minute session to build the Anchor Goal, Daily Guidelines, and Weekly Scouting Report for the one goal you've been putting off. $197, workbook included. ericafiguresitout.com/workshop Stop waiting to feel like your best self. S1.E3: The Weekly Scouting Report (How to Fail Properly)

Send us Fan Mail You set the rule. You built the guideline. You found your Floor. And then you broke it. What you do next is everything. The standard answer is shame. You tell yourself you lack discipline, that you are the kind of person who never finishes what they start, and then you say the most dangerous sentence in personal development: "I will try harder next week." Trying harder does not fix a broken system. Diagnosing it does. In this episode, I introduce the Weekly Scouting Report — the feedback loop that separates people who actually change from people who just keep restarting. We go through the five domains of friction that cause most guidelines to break: Environment, Boundaries, Fuel, Re-entry, and Clarity. And I walk you through the exact diagnosis I ran on my own running guideline after it collapsed following a 50-mile race. What you'll take away: Why shame is the least effective response to a missed guidelineThe five domains of friction and how to identify which one broke your systemHow to run your own Weekly Scouting Report every SundayThe mechanical fix that actually holds up to real lifeMentioned in this episode: EricaFiguresItOut.com — download the free Season of You Starter Series, including the Weekly Scouting Report frameworkApply for coaching at EricaFiguresItOut.comOn August 8, I’m hosting a live 90-minute Season Starter Workshop where we build your 90-day plan together on Zoom. S1.E2: Why Vague Goals Are Garbage (The Binary Rule and The Floor)

Send us Fan Mail "I want to save money." "I want to get healthier." "I want to build a business." Those are not instructions. Those are wishes. And you cannot execute a wish when you're running on three cups of coffee. In this episode, I introduce the two tools that replace every vague goal you have ever written: the Binary Guideline and the Floor. A Binary Guideline has only two outcomes — you did it or you didn't. No gray area, no negotiation. The Floor is the minimum viable action that keeps the habit alive on your worst days. I also tell you about the guideline I set for myself that had nothing to do with work, and the night I drove home from Atlanta at 2 AM and still showed up. What you'll take away: Why vague goals require a decision every single time and why that kills executionThe anatomy of a Binary Guideline: action plus constraintWhat the Floor is and why it protects your identity, not just your habitHow to write both for your Anchor Goal from Episode 1Mentioned in this episode: EricaFiguresItOut.com — download the free Season of You Starter SeriesApply for coaching at EricaFiguresItOut.comOn August 8, I’m hosting a live 90-minute Season Starter Workshop where we build your 90-day plan together on Zoom.
