NPC Member/Author Describes History of Hood-Winking in Presidential Politics

The news that Air Force One was used as a decoy in July to protect President Donald Trump from a possible assassination attempt may have sounded like something out of a political thriller. But the tactic has several precedents in American political history. Long before AI, deepfakes and social media made it possible to create convincing imposters, impersonators could fool voters in a decidedly low-tech way—as lookalikes on whistle-stop campaign trains. In this episode of Update-1, NPC member Edward Segal talks with Broadcast Podcast Co-Chair Mike Hempen about how deception was effectively used and cites many surprising examples. Segal is the author of “Whistle-Stop Politics: Campaign Trains and the Reporters Who Covered Them,” which traces 185 years of presidential campaign-train history. Hosted on Ausha.
