09 Colossians 2:4-7 - Walking in Him

The sermon explores the dual approach Paul takes in Colossians to address false teaching: warning against deceptive persuasive arguments and affirming the believer's secure union with Christ. It emphasizes that the antidote to Gnostic error is not intellectual debate but a deep understanding of Christ's full deity and the believer's position in Him. The text highlights the progression of the Christian life, moving from being firmly rooted in Christ at salvation to being continuously built up and established in the faith through instruction. This stability is characterized by good discipline and steadfastness, contrasting with the lukewarmness of Laodicea. The message concludes by encouraging believers to respond to this truth with overflowing gratitude, recognizing that their security rests solely in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Rich Poverty

This sermon examines the counter-cultural nature of Christian generosity by contrasting the impoverished churches of Macedonia with the wealthier church in Corinth. It argues that true giving flows not from financial surplus but from the grace of God, which transforms deep poverty and affliction into abundant joy and self-sacrificial love. The central theological anchor is the incarnation, where Christ, though rich, became poor to make believers rich in spiritual blessings, establishing the motive for giving as gratitude rather than obligation. The message challenges the assumption that generosity is reserved for the wealthy, urging believers to surrender their hearts to the Lord first so that their financial support becomes a natural overflow of their faith. Ultimately, the sermon calls for a sincere, cheerful response to the needs of the church, reflecting the single-hearted simplicity of the Macedonian believers.

That You May Be Certain

This sermon concludes a study of 1 John by examining the five certainties that validate a believer's faith and provide assurance of eternal life. The central message emphasizes that true assurance is rooted in the biblical Christ, the answered prayers of those aligned with God's will, the pardon of confessed sins, the perseverance of the saints against sin and Satan, and the spiritual illumination granted by the Holy Spirit. The tone is pastoral and instructional, encouraging believers to trust in God's promises rather than seeking external guarantees, while warning against false teachings and apostasy. By drawing on passages such as Romans 8 and Hebrews 6, the exposition balances the security of salvation with the necessity of genuine repentance and holiness. The sermon ultimately points to Jesus Christ as the true God and the source of eternal life, urging the congregation to guard against idols and to partake of the Lord's Supper with sober self-examination and gratitude.

The Lord's Supper

The sermon provides an instructional defense for observing the Lord's Supper with unleavened bread and wine, arguing that these elements best represent the sinlessness of Christ and the cleansing power of His blood. It addresses the historical shift to grape juice, asserting that the biblical context and the symbolic meaning of fermentation support the use of wine. The teaching further explains the necessity of closed communion, linking it to the maintenance of church discipline and purity as outlined in 1 Corinthians 5. Participants are encouraged to approach the table with self-examination and gratitude, recognizing their worthiness not through personal merit but through their union with Christ. The overall tone is pastoral and doctrinal, aiming to clarify the proper mode and participants of this sacred ordinance.

The Lord’s Supper — Introduction

The sermon explores the theological foundations and practical implications of observing the Lord's Supper, specifically addressing the practices of closed communion and the use of wine. Drawing from the 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith and John Gill's commentary, the message clarifies that the ordinance is a symbolic remembrance of Christ's once-for-all sacrifice rather than a re-offering or transubstantiation. It emphasizes that worthy participation requires genuine faith, spiritual hunger, and a life consistent with the gospel, distinguishing between those who partake in faith and those who do so unworthily. The tone is instructional and pastoral, urging believers to examine themselves, maintain church discipline, and approach the table with gratitude and reverence. The discussion concludes by highlighting how these practices foster church purity and encourage believers to align their lives with their profession of faith.

The Maintenance of Pastors

This sermon examines the biblical and confessional mandate for the financial support of church elders, grounding the obligation in both natural law and the express command of Christ. It defines the extensive labor of the ministry, which includes the rigorous study of Scripture, systematic theology, and a life of deep prayer, emphasizing that elders are accountable to God for the eternal souls they shepherd. The text argues that because this work is demanding and essential for the spiritual health of the congregation, pastors are entitled to a comfortable supply that frees them from secular distractions and allows them to exercise hospitality. The sermon refutes the notion that ministers should work for free by citing Paul's example, clarifying that while he waived his right to support, he affirmed the principle that laborers are worthy of their hire. Ultimately, the congregation is called to support their pastors not merely out of duty, but with gratitude for the grace conveyed through the ministry of the Word and sacraments.
