A war within.

As we enter chapter 4 of our study we immediately find ourselves with a rebuke from James regarding internal strife within the body of believers. Back biting and infighting was a problem for this early church, much like the church today. It isn't attacks from the outside that sinks churches, it's the war that is taking place within. The end of chapter 3 leaves off with peace, but we must be aware of the wars that infiltrate and influence our body. If we are to be successful in the goal of the Cause of Christ we must not be fighting and bickering with each other. There is a much greater enemy to fight and our focus should be on closing ranks and standing along side, rather than against each other in the body.

Children and the Kingdom of God

This sermon examines the incident in Mark 10 where Jesus rebukes his disciples for hindering children from coming to Him, highlighting the unique grief Jesus felt when access to Him was blocked. The central message urges parents and the church to prioritize bringing children to Christ, arguing that this is critical in a culture that suppresses truth and promotes much unrighteousness. The teaching expands beyond literal children to define the spiritual posture required for all believers to enter the Kingdom: a humble, dependent, and childlike trust in God rather than prideful self-sufficiency. By contrasting the world's suppression of the knowledge of God with the open arms of Jesus, the sermon calls for a life of gratitude and repentance, emphasizing that only those who receive the Kingdom with childlike faith are truly part of it.

He Set His Face

In "He Set His Face" (Luke 9:51-62), Charles Sebold follows Jesus onto the long road to Jerusalem. The disciples still do not grasp that He will be delivered into the hands of men, yet Jesus knows exactly where the road ends and sets His face like flint, as the Servant of Isaiah 50, toward the cross. A Samaritan village refuses to receive Him, and James and John, fresh from seeing Elijah on the mountain, offer to call down fire as Elijah did in 2 Kings 1. Jesus rebukes them and simply moves on, proving greater than Elijah in mercy; years later John returns to Samaria, and this time what comes down from heaven is the Holy Spirit. Three would-be followers then show that Jesus is also greater than Elijah in demand. One is told the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head. One asks first to bury his father and hears, "Leave the dead to bury their own dead," and is given a living task: proclaim the kingdom. One asks first to say farewell, echoing Elisha in 1 Kings 19, and hears that no one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom. The real issue in each case is the word "first." Yet the first man with his hand on the plow is Jesus Himself, who never looks back. This passage is not a club against marriage, home, or family; the Reformers rejected a two-story Christianity, and Jesus sent the Gerasene man home. He does not demand every hour, but He does demand first place, and then the next step He has actually told you to take.

Patience

This sermon explores the patience and long-suffering of Jesus Christ as demonstrated in his interaction with the disciple Thomas. By contrasting Thomas's persistent unbelief and refusal to accept the resurrection testimony with Jesus's tender response, the message highlights that Christ meets believers at their point of weakness rather than rebuking them. The exposition emphasizes that Jesus reveals his deity and the cost of salvation through the wounds in his resurrected body, inviting Thomas to move from doubt to the confession of "My Lord and my God." While affirming the blessing of faith without sight, the sermon issues a solemn warning that God's patience is not infinite and that the window of grace will eventually close, urging listeners to seek the Lord while he may be found.

Rebuke Them Sharply

The sermon emphasizes the necessity of sharp rebuke and sound doctrine to maintain spiritual integrity, drawing primarily from Titus 1. It argues that while the Word of God is meant to exhort and encourage, it must also confront sin and false teaching decisively to prevent the church from being led astray by unruly talkers and deceivers. The message challenges believers to distinguish between biblical truth and human traditions or cultural sayings, urging them to rely solely on Scripture for guidance and conviction. A central theme is the distinction between professing faith and possessing it, highlighting that true salvation is evidenced by a transformed life and a clean conscience. The tone is convicting and pastoral, calling the congregation to self-examination, honesty before God, and a commitment to living out their faith consistently in all areas of life.

The Kingdom Belongs to Our Children

VaultAI Summary: This sermon explores the compassionate relationship between Jesus Christ and the children of believers, using the baptism of an infant as a central illustration. It argues that the kingdom of God includes the infants of covenant parents, citing Christ's command to let them come and the biblical promise that their children are holy. The preacher contrasts the disciples' rebuke with Jesus' indignation, emphasizing that the church must remove barriers to children's access to God. Furthermore, the text serves as an evangelistic exhortation, teaching that all sinners must enter the kingdom with the helplessness and humility of a child, relying entirely on grace rather than personal merit or works. The message concludes by urging believers to maintain a childlike trust in Christ for their daily needs and spiritual growth, while parents are called to pray fervently for the regeneration of their offspring.
