Episode 290 - Graminy

Founded in 2010, Graminy seeks to fuse the classical and grassroots tradi- tions, from Bach to bluegrass, from Co- pland to Celtic, from Gershwin to native American, from Kodaly to klezmer, and more. Drawing on all these styles, Graminy composes and arranges all its music and calls it Class-Grass. Graminy’s music focuses on themes of ecology and place. The name derives from the botanical name for the grass family, Gramineae, as their music draws on the entire family of grassroots tradi- tions, from all places and ecologies. Their new CD, “Germinations: A Blue- grass Symphony in D” has been nominated for awards in several categories at this year’s MAMA Awards (Madison Area Music Awards). www.graminy.net

Episode 289 - Elm Duo

Eleanor Mayerfeld is the 2011 Frontenac Old Time Music Fiddle Champion, the youngest winner ever. Formerly a member of Sonora Strings, the touring violin ensemble of Suzuki Strings of Madison, Eleanor has toured with them in Puerto Rico, Door County, and California. Currently a member of the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra. Mike has played in many groups, most notably the Barn Owl Band, with whom he recorded three albums and appeared on the National Public Radio Show A Prairie Home Companion. Mike is a composer and his folk tunes have been recorded by many folk artists. www.elmduo.net
