The Tactics Show: What Went Wrong and How Carrick Can Fix It

#1063 | Manchester United have given Michael Carrick more time, with no date, no number of games and no target attached. Ed and Dharnish look at what has to change in the meantime. The press comes first: a half-press in which players arrive late, leaving United’s back-four exposed. The build-up has lost its triangles and possession dominance that offers no control.  United’s defence is disorganised and the most experienced centre-backs are built for a deep line, which limits how aggressively Carrick’s team can press.  Then there’s a look ahead to Chelsea at the weekend, a team that scores freely but with a questionable defence. And ahead to the midweek game against Roma’. Gasperini’s team likes to press man-to-man. The verdict is that not all of United’s problems is tactical, but the rest is out of Carrick’s hands. 0:00 Intro: Carrick gets more time 4:08 What’s gone wrong with the pressing 8:32 How Carrick could fix the press 14:19 Buildup and central progression 18:13 Defensive frailties and the rest defence 21:33 Meltdown mode and managerial patience 23:51 Platforming players: picking the XI 27:26 Chelsea preview 30:52 Roma and Aston Villa 35:26 Wrap-up Sponsor Ready to have an AI that can tackle real work? NQAT Daily: What Carrick Has to do Next

Michael Carrick has been given more time, with no date, no number of games and no target. With no new players coming in January either, there are five tests for the four games ahead: Chelsea, Roma, Villa and Liverpool. Can Carrick platform his players properly, make them work harder, settle on one way of playing, and act as a leader? The fifth test belongs to the club. The club has not publicly said what the criteria are for Carrick keeping his job. 0:00 Carrick’s Impossible Job 1:44 The January Trap 2:57 Get Players in the Right Position 5:56 Can He Get Them to Run? 9:19 The Core Idea 13:23 Be a Leader, Not a Victim 15:41 What Are the Criteria? 18:49 Five Things to Think About

    NQAT Daily: Dead Man Walking?

Michael Carrick is still Manchester United’s manager after a crisis meeting at Carrington that decided ... nothing. Why did Carrick survive when the club seemed set on firing him? Turns out replacing him costs too much, the people choosing the next manager can’t agree on who it should be, and nobody at the club could explain what United’s identity is supposed to be anyway. We've had two weeks of players going public, then a home performance that had the crowd booing them off. It all leaves Carrick looking like a decent man who has lost the dressing room. So what changes now, with Chelsea, Roma, Villa and Liverpool next. And how can anybody trust the club’s leadership when they have absolutely no criteria for making decisions. 0:00 Carrick Survives 0:24 Three Reasons He Stayed 2:08 Candidates and the Cost 4:03 Stalemate in the Boardroom 4:57 Como and Bournemouth 7:05 Players Go Public 9:28 Carrick’s Credit and His Mistakes 11:14 What Changes Now? 13:10 A Regime Without Criteria

NQAT Daily: Ratcliffe's 32 Months of Failure at United

Jim Ratcliffe told the BBC in February 2024 that Manchester United’s problem was the environment around the coaches that had failed in United in the time since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. Around 32 months later, with Ratcliffe in charge of that environment, we should hold him to that standard. Ratcliffe set himself four tests in that first week: pick the right solution rather than run to the wrong one, build a best-in-class sporting structure, stop lurching between styles, and put football first. Let’s mark each one in turn, from Ten Hag being extended then sacked to the revolving sporting department and a club with record revenues and the worst start in decades. It leaves a question: why Ratcliffe is at United at all, and what it means that the environment he once blamed is now his own? 0:00 What went wrong with INEOS at United? 1:33 The Glazers’ legacy revisited 3:53 Walk to the Right Solution 5:15 Build the Structure 7:18 No Lurching Between Styles 10:13 Football Will Drive the Club 12:44 Why Is He Even Here? 15:34 Same Mistake Twice

    The Inevitable End

#1062 | Michael Carrick looks set to be sacked after a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, coming off the 4-1 loss at Como. Ed and Daniel go through the game and the week around it. If this is the end, Carrick went out with a statement: Bruno Fernandes criticising the staff in public then sitting on the bench without being used. Then the disintegration of Carrick’s time at United, with the manager increasingly reaching for odd solutions as the season fell apart.  With the squad giving Carrick very little in recent weeks, the conversation turns to the owners and executives who decide what happens now. The same guys who picked Ten Hag and Amorim and Carrick decide who’s next, with Eddie Howe probably the favourite.  In the short term United need to manage the crisis, but with a summer of expiring contracts and more investment needed than is likely, does a new manager really change anything? 0:00 Match Reaction 3:47 Bruno vs Carrick 11:08 Team Selection & Tactics 16:35 Season in Freefall 19:09 The Owners 23:56 Who’s Next? 34:59 Eddie Howe 51:09 What Happens Next? NQAT Daily: United’s Next Manager?

Nobody has sacked Manchester United manager Michael Carrick yet, but the shortlist is already leaking. There's some bookies' favourites we can rule out - Emery, Fabregas, Tuchel, Southgate, Pochettino. Then there's some requirements the club probably has for its next manager: work with the squad as it is, pull together a fractured dressing room, work with the structure, and deliver Champions League football year after year. Do these five candidates meet the spec? Conte, Nagelsmann, Hürzeler, McKenna and Howe. Any of the five inherit the same club, so the real question is who could survive contact with United? 0:00 Intro: The shortlist 1:21 Who’s not coming to United 3:10 The job spec 6:15 Conte 8:33 Nagelsmann 11:31 Hürzeler 13:34 McKenna 15:28 Howe

    NQAT Extra: Carrick vs Bruno

Bruno Fernandes says United should be pressing man to man. Carrick says they half pressed at Como and conceded. After the 4-1 defeat, Ed and Dharnish work out what each of them means and whether the problem is the principles or the execution. Pressing too late, players marking men without ever stepping out to win the ball, and a captain who sprints a lot without getting near. Then, why the intensity against Leeds vanished in Italy and why Bruno chose to go public a week after Martinez? They pick a team for Bournemouth, and wonder whether it could be Carrick’s last game. 0:00 Intro: Bruno vs Carrick 1:12 A Shameful Night in Como 2:21 What the Pressing Means 5:51 Principles vs Execution 10:15 Why Bruno Went Public 13:22 Leeds Intensity vs Como Apathy 22:53 Bournemouth Preview and Line-ups 29:31 Next Manager?

NQAT Daily: The Fish Rots from the Head

Within minutes of the 4-1 defeat at Como, Manchester United’s captain and manager had publicly blamed each other. Bruno Fernandes pointed at the staff and the club living in the past. Michael Carrick pointed at the players’ effort. What does this mean a week after Martinez went after the technical director.? The argument over pressing is only the backdrop. The real story is discipline, and a club that has stopped having its arguments in private. Upstairs, the people who will choose the next manager are briefing against each other. A sacking looks close, but no new manager fixes this from the dugout.
