    Legends Podcast #798: Willard (2003)

    Legends of Halloween starts early this year with Rita's pick, a 2003 horror flick that remakes a 1971 hit. The film stars Crispin Glover as a misfit who befriends a colony of rats living in his basement, later using them to get revenge on those who have wronged him. Written and directed by The X-Files writer, producer, and director Glen Morgan, this darkly comic tale was based on the original film, which was in turn based on the 1968 novel Ratman's Notebooks by Stephen Gilbert. While the original was the 11th-highest-grossing release of its year and spawned a sequel, audiences smelled a rat with the remake, and it ended up as a box-office bomb. However, critics praised Glover's performance and the new one sold well on DVD, even winning a Golden Satellite award for Best DVD Extras. But does the remake really build a better mousetrap, or should it be exterminated?     Legends Podcast #797: Children of Men (2006)

    The year is 2027, and for the past two decades, humans have been unable to reproduce. The infertility crisis has brought the globe to the breaking point, with Britain now a totalitarian, anti-immigrant state. Clive Owen plays Theo, a depressed bureaucrat tasked by his insurgency leader ex, played by Julianne Moore, with escorting a woman out of the country. When the woman turns out to be pregnant, an existential threat emerges - one that risks the fate of the human race! Directed by Alfonso Cuarón, based on the novel by P.D. James, this 2006 film was a critical hit but flopped at the box office. Now, twenty years later, the film seems not only prescient, but ahead of its time. And nowhere does it look more cutting-edge than in its cinematography - courtesy of Emmanuel Lubezki - featuring immersive, extended shots of the action. However, time has been kind, and the film has been frequently cited as one of the best films of the century so far.     Legends Podcast #796: Purple Rain (1984)

    Last week, we talked about Song Sung Blue, Neil Diamond, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This week, we've got another color, musical icon, and Midwestern city in mind: purple, Prince, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Yes, the Purple One himself makes his feature film debut in this 1984 Albert Magnoli-directed rock opera. By 1984, Prince had already established himself as one of pop music's most exciting and unpredictable stars, but this film, loosely based on his own life, transformed him into a cultural phenomenon. And then there's the Oscar-winning soundtrack, including "When Doves Cry," "Let's Go Crazy," and, of course, that title track. The combined successes made Prince only the third artist at the time, after The Beatles and Elvis Presley, to have a Number One album, film, and song in the same calendar year. In 2019, the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation as a work of cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance. The music made the movie legendary, while Prince's charisma, fashion, and performances cemented his place in pop-culture history.     Legends Podcast #795: Song Sung Blue (2025)

    For her 2025 release pick, Rita selected a film with loads of local Milwaukee flair. Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson play Mike and Claire Sardina, a real-life Neil Diamond tribute duo known as Lightning & Thunder. Documentary filmmaker Greg Kohs captured the couple's attempted comeback in a 2008 festival favorite, where Hustle & Flow director Craig Brewer first encountered their story. Brewer spent years trying to turn this small-scale Midwestern saga into a big-screen musical drama about love, loss, and the extraordinary dreams of ordinary performers. Released on Christmas Day, the film arrived with a marketing campaign that included Jackman and Hudson performing Neil Diamond songs live at Radio City Music Hall. The film played well and scored multiple award nods for Hudson, but will this musical biopic make a beautiful noise, or leave us singing the blues?     Legends Podcast #794: The Shining (1980)

    From the depths of his birth year - 1980 - Beef brings us a tale of horror and suspense based on Stephen King's classic novel. Yes, for the second month in a row, Beef picked a movie based on a story by Stephen King. Redrum! Redrum! Redrum! Yes, it is that movie, the one directed by Stanley Kubrick and all-but disowned by King himself. Starring Jack Nicholson as Jack, a struggling writer who takes a winter gig at a mountain hotel… Seriously, the first red flag here is that a resort in Colorado can't find a way to make it "economically viable" to stay open during ski season. Who runs this place? In tow are Jack's wife, played by Shelley Duvall, and their precognitive son, Danny. Hijinks ensue when the place turns out to be haunted, driving everyone insane just as a snowstorm cuts them off from the outside world. In 1980, critical reviews were lukewarm at best, accusations of on-set cruelty swirled like snowflakes, and its bestselling author's own chilly response to the adaptation tarnished the film's release. However, time has since been kind, and the film has been critically reassessed and is now listed as one of the greatest horror films ever made.     Legends Podcast #793: Aug-Heist: Heat (1995)

    Aug-Heist comes to a close with this 1995 Michael Mann film starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, sharing screen time for the first time in their careers. Mann already made this movie once, in 1989 as a made-for-TV movie called L.A. Takedown. In this iteration, De Niro plays the leader of a sophisticated band of thieves while Pacino plays the hardboiled detective obsessed with taking them down. The film features an all-star ensemble including Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, Ashley Judd, Amy Brenneman, Diane Venora, Wes Studi, Dennis Haysbert, Jon Voight, and a young Natalie Portman. Critics praised the film, yet it opened behind family-friendly fare like Jumanji and Toy Story. Retrospective reviews have named it one of the most influential crime films of all time, inspiring works as diverse as The Dark Knight and Grand Theft Auto, there is a sequel/prequel, Heat 2, is due out next year.     Legends Podcast #792: Aug-Heist: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

    Our first-ever Aug-Heist pick, 1973's The Sting, saw Paul Newman and Robert Redford re-team with director George Roy Hill for a Depression-era crime caper. Now, we're reviewing the 1969 film that brought the three of them back together for the first time. The film, from a script by legendary writer William Goldman, is loosely based on the real-life Wild West outlaws Robert LeRoy Parker (Newman), and his partner Harry Longabaugh, (Redford), who in 1888 are on the lam after a string of train robberies. The film also stars Katherine Ross as Etta Place, Ted Cassidy as Harvey Logan, and features a soundtrack by Burt Bacharach. While audiences didn't storm the theaters to see it on first release, retrospective reviews have been favorable and the film did win four Oscars. In 2006, the Writers Guild of America ranked Goldman's screenplay 11th on its list of the 101 Greatest Screenplays ever written.     Legends Podcast #791: Aug-Heist: Cruella (2021)

    In 2021, I, Tonya and future Supergirl director Craig Gillespie unleashed the live-action origin story of Disney's 101 Dalmatians baddie Cruella De Vil. Emma Stone dons the iconic black-and-white wig as the dognapping fashionista, here an orphaned up-and-coming designer in '70s punk rock London who also does crime. Emma Thompson plays her foil, the Baroness, an established couturière, in the story by The Devil Wears Prada screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna. With her little dog, too, comes an ensemble cast including Mark Strong, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, John McCrea, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste. Released in the dog days of the Covid-19 pandemic, the flick floundered at the box office while getting a simultaneous PVOD release for stay-at-home viewing, but still managed to fleece audiences for $233 million. However, it did go on to appropriately earn an Oscar for Best Costume Design for Jenny Beavan, and was also spotted among the nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
