5.14 Jonathan Conlin on Chevalière d'Eon and her Portrait Prints

On today’s episode of the Hopkins Press Podcast, we're talking with Jonathan Conlin, whose article in the latest issue of Eighteenth Century Studies, "States of Transition: The Chevalière d’Eon and Her Portrait Prints, 1764–91" studies portrait prints of the Chevalière d’Eon commissioned in the late eighteenth century, which, as Conlin reads, serve as a way for d’Eon to create and control an image and narrative for herself as a historical figure, and as perhaps the first real celebrity figure to emerge from Europe. While there has been a lot of work published on d’Eon’over the years—a fascinating tale full of political intrigue, international spy work, and resistance to Western gender binary—Conlin’s article in Eighteenth Century Studies and new biography about d’Eon takes a somewhat different tack. We’ve made the article free to read at Project MUSE through the end of November, and you can find a links in the show notes, along with links to Conlin’s deontraces Instagram profile, and a link to the British Museum’s collection of portraits of d’Eon. Jonathan Conlin is Professor of History at the University of Southampton, UK, and the author of D'Eon: The Wonder of Her Sex (Bloomsbury). His other books include The Met: A History of a Museum and Its People (Columbia UP) and Tales of Two Cities (Atlantic), a comparative history of Paris and London.

5.7 Nora Gilbert and Paige Sweet on Gaslighting

The most recent issue of our journal Social Research focuses on the concept of “Gaslighting,” a term that has gained a great deal of popularity in recent years that has its roots in classic cinema and theatre, most famously in the 1944 film Gaslight, for which Ingrid Bergman was awarded a best actress Oscar.

The articles in this special issue look at gaslighting in myriad contexts, from film and domestic violence to international politics and the judiciary. For this episode, we speak with two authors from the issue: sociologist Paige Sweet, who is looking at Gaslighting in Intimate Relationships, and Nora Gilbert, who co-specializes in nineteenth-century British literature and twentieth-century American film — an ideal platform from which she investigates an underexplored subgenre of films that arose in Gaslight’s immediate wake which she calls gaslight noir. Of course, fans of the Hopkins Press Journals may recognize Nora Gilbert’s name as the long-time editor of another one of our titles, Studies in the Novel. Both of the interviewees articles will be free to read in Social Research on Project MUSE through 31 August 2026.
