    * Obsessed With Tiny Desk 2026 *

    After the summer break of 2026, I'm back with a bunch of my favourite NPR Tiny Desk concerts. What are NPR Tiny Desk Concerts, and how did they come about? The first Tiny Desk Concert came about in 2008 (after All Songs Considered host and producer Bob Boilen and NPR Music editor Stephen Thompson left a bar show frustrated that they couldn't hear the music over the crowd noise. Thompson joked that the musician, folk singer Laura Gibson, should just perform at Boilen's desk. A month later (on April 21st, 2008), Boilen arranged for her to do just that, making an impromptu recording and posting it online. Even the name of the series is connected to Boilen: it was taken from his 1970s psychedelic dance band called Tiny Desk Unit. Fast forward to August 2026, today, this series includes 1'442 concerts viewed by more than 42 million people only on YouTube, and with 16 to 20 million monthly viewers across different platforms. NPR Music's Tiny Desk Concerts were always one of my favourite things to listen to, but with the pandemic, my interest turned into an obsession. In 2020, I did two shows dedicated to them: Obsessed with Tiny Desk 2020 Part I and Part II. I did one more in 2021, another in 2022, and two more in 2024: one regular show and another one as my special Xmas show. I skipped the last year because I had too much other material to cover, but as I listened to many cool sessions over the summer, I decided to bring *Obsessed with Tiny Desk* back.  So what is it about NPR Tiny Desk Concert series that I love? It is very simple: this series brings an intimate concert vibe through approx 20-minute video performances, recorded either live at the desk of Bob Boilen or, during the pandemic, at someplace that feels like an artist's home. The latter unsurprisingly called Tiny Desk (home) concerts. Bob Boilen retired in the meantime, but he created music history with NPR Tiny Desk Concerts, and his legacy continues. During the pandemic, we couldn't attend gigs or music festivals, so, for me, NPR Tiny Desk Concerts were the closest thing I had to live gigs. Even today, this is still my favourite place when I need to do something that requires deep concentration. Also, when I am craving a live and more intimate experience, and I don't feel like leaving my house.  Let's be honest, how often are you able to see your favourite (or newly discovered favourite) artist performing in a small, intimate venue? Unfortunately, not that frequently.     * Unidentified at Zurich Film Festival 2025 *

    I already reviewed the 21st edition of the Zurich Film Festival in 3 previous Gimme a Beats: in November 2025, with a focus on the movie Hedda, in January 2026, with a focus on the movie Cuerpo Celeste and in March 2026, with a focus on the movie Calle Malaga. As listeners of the Gimme a Beat know, after exploring the *female factor* of the Zurich Film Festival, I adapt my radio shows to the releases of the movies I focus on. This year, I have seen more than 30 movies, and had the opportunity to interview 4 female filmmakers and 1 music composer. To make sure that these movies receive the attention they deserve, I created several Gimme A Beats, each focused on one movie and, when possible, aired in alignment with their Swiss cinema release (not all of the movies will be released in Switzerland). Considering the number of movies I've seen, I will not be reviewing all the movies and posting them on the Gimme A Beat page. But I will continue posting the reviews after tonight's show, since most of the movies from the festival are coming to the cinemas next year.     * Unfiltered with Naveni *

    Back in 2024, while scrolling through my social media, I came across Longstreet Unchained concerts (which I immediately renamed Longstreet unplugged as they reminded me of the original: MTV Unplugged). Longsteer Bar, where these concerts are held, used to be one of my favorite spots in Zurich, back in the day when I was still DJ-ing and going out. So, I was glad to see it still reinventing itself, attracting new crowds. One of the concerts caught my attention not only because it was fun, charming, and bubbly, at the same time, but because of the singer, Naveni, and her talent. I haven't heard of her before, so I did a bit of research. Naveni is a 23-year-old self-taught singer-songwriter and producer from Switzerland with Indian-English heritage. Even though there were some technical issues, and she seemed a bit nervous, she completely took over the stage and the audience. She switched between Swiss German and English, making jokes about herself and explaining the songs she was performing. The gig was not perfect, but it was genuine, entertaining, and fun, while clearly showcasing Naveni's talent as an artist and performer. Afterwards, I reached out to Naveni for an interview. It took us a while to find a time that worked for both of us, but finally, in March 2025, we got together for the video call and interview. We talked about everything: her new album (currently in the making), her upbringing, finding her path to becoming the person and the artist she is today, and even her hair.     In November 2025 - Gimme a Beat, I reviewed the 21st edition of the Zurich Film Festival. This year, I have seen more than 30 movies this year, and I had the opportunity to interview 4 female filmmakers and 1 music composer. As in previous years when I had this many interviews, I break my review of the Zurich Film Festival into several Gimme A Beats, the second one happening tonight, and a few others later on. In most cases, and when it's possible, I will adapt my radio show to the Swiss screenings of movies, to make sure that these movies receive the attention they deserve. Considering the number of movies I've seen, I will not be reviewing all the movies and posting them on the Gimme A Beat page. But I will continue posting the reviews after tonight's show, since most of the movies from the festival are coming to the cinemas next year.     * Representing 21st Century RnB - Part II *

    Back in January 2024, Rolling Stone released their 100 Greatest R&B Songs of the 21st Century. The list created lots of buzz; some people loved it, others pointed out what was missing, and the artists featured in it, celebrated. I have always been a huge fan of R&B, so I decided to do my own response. In January 2024, I created my own list and dedicated the whole Gimme a Beat to it.  Since the list was very long, I broke the show into the two parts, but never got to the second part. This December, I decided to go back to the 2nd part of that list. Considering that R&B, with funky, contagious beats is all about brining out a plethora of emotions, comforting, happy and nostalgic vibes, I thought it is very appropriate for my Xmas 🎄🎅 🎄show of 2025.     * Hedda at Zurich Film Festival 2025 *

    In 2025, Zurich Film Festival celebrated its 21st year. Over 11 days, the festival attracted an impressive 135’000 visitors. A total of 115 films were shown, including 140 World and European Premiers, 16 of which were Swiss movies. The whole city was buzzing with good vibes, filled not just with movie lovers, but with international and national stars. First held in 2005, Zurich Film Festival established itself very quickly on the national and international film festival scene. The formula for its success it's probably a mix of an attractive location: an international but small city of Zurich; a great selection of movies and different programs/events like ZFF Masters, ZFF for Kids, and a few others. I loved that this year most of the movies were shown in the cinemas I prefer: Frame, Corso, and Arthouse. I love these cinemas for their quality and awesome location (close to my house 😎). Looking at all these years, I have been visiting or reviewing (since 2017) Zurich Film Festival. The way I like to explain its success is to quote/paraphrase the sentence I found in the industry booklet a few years ago. Basically, the organizers agree on a few basics for a successful film festival: “Content is king, Collaboration is key and Encounters among creative folks are essential”. I am glad to confirm that even after many years, the organizers are still taking “these basics” seriously while developing the festival further and, most importantly, in the right direction. This is why I keep coming back and reviewing Zurich Film Festival. From the perspective of Gimme A Beat, exploring *the female factor* of the festival is easy. Zurich Film Festival always provides a significant number of female stories and movies from female directors, and a good balance of different genres, aspiring filmmakers, and (potential) blockbusters. As listeners of Gimme A Beat (and my family and friends) already know, having a busy schedule is business as usual for me, even if it felt that 2025 was busier than ever before, and with so many great movies, definitely a pleasure. For me, Zurich Film Festival is all about watching movies. My most enjoyable moment is sitting in the dark cinema, fully immersed in the storyline. This year, even though many fabulous events were happening on the festival grounds, I haven't attended/seen any of them. Most importantly, I have seen more than 30 movies this year, and I had the opportunity to interview 4 female filmmakers and 1 music composer. With so much more material, I have decided to dedicate several whole Gimme A Beats to Zurich Film Festival, the one happening tonight and a few others later on.     * Juana Aguirre at Primavera Sound 2025 *

    Primavera Sound (commonly referred to as simply Primavera) is an annual music festival with the main location in Parc del Fòrum, a park situated directly at the Mediterranean seafront in Barcelona, Spain. The festival takes place between the end of May and the beginning of June every year since 2001. In addition to the best-known edition in Barcelona, since 2012, Primavera Sound has expanded to Primavera Sound Porto Edition as well. Before 2025, Primavera Sound festivals were organized in several locations outside of Barcelona and Porto; this year, Primavera Tours are scheduled in Madrid and Barcelona in June, July, and September. I already dedicated one show to Primavera Sound 2025, just before the radio summer break, featuring an interview with Marta Pallarès, Head of Press and Corporate Relations at Primavera Sound, and a selection of songs from female artists who performed at the festival and were my highlights. Check it out here.  In tonight's show, I am going back to Primavera Sound Barcelona 2025 with a different focus. During Primavera Sound 2025 in Barcelona, I saw many great gigs. Thanks to Instagram being able to host 20 videos per post, I was able to create one post per day, and here they are for day 1, day 2, and day 3. One of my highlights of the festival was Juana Aguirre, an über-talented Argentinian artist, singer-songwriter, composer, and producer, whose music is a mix of experimental, folk, indie, and Latin American folklore. I discovered Juana through Primavera's program, and from the moment I discovered her, I didn't stop listening to her. Her music made me feel emotional, happy, sad, and melancholic, all at once. I was excited to finally see her live for the 1st time, and her powerful, intense performance exceeded expectations, effortlessly feeding the souls and minds of the audience who attended it. A few days before, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Juana for an interview.
