32 - How to Help an Aging Parent Find Purpose Again

Show Guest: Henry Quinlan, Educator, Publisher and Senior Achiever. Henry's website ============================================ The NEW Love, Limits & Lessons: The Parenting Toolbox ============================================ There comes a strange point in adulthood when we realize that the people who once encouraged us to get off the couch, get involved, and make something of our lives may now need a little encouragement themselves. What do you do when an aging parent retires and gradually begins spending more and more of life in front of the television? How do you encourage Mom or Dad to stay active, connected, and interested in life—without crossing the line and trying to parent your parent? In this episode, Bill Corbett talks with Henry Quinlan about helping seniors discover purpose in the years after retirement. Henry believes that one of the best places to begin is not by telling an aging parent what they should be doing, but by asking what matters to them. What did Dad once love doing? What is Mom good at? What skills, knowledge, interests, and experiences have they accumulated over a lifetime—and is there someone who could benefit from them? The conversation explores volunteering, mentoring, social connection, rediscovering old passions, sharing knowledge with younger generations, and even preserving family stories for children and grandchildren. As Henry points out, our children may know something about our lives, while our grandchildren may know surprisingly little. This isn't about filling every minute of Mom or Dad's retirement with activities. They've earned the right to slow down and enjoy life on their own terms. It's about recognizing the difference between enjoying retirement and gradually withdrawing from life. If you're an adult son or daughter who has ever wondered how to help an aging parent find something meaningful to look forward to, this conversation offers a different approach. Instead of asking: “Why don't you get out and do something?” Try asking: “What would you still love to do?” Because growing older doesn't mean someone's best stories, contributions—or possibilities—have to be behind them.

29 - The Seven Needs of Children of Divorce

The Christmas Gratitude for Kids 7 - 12 now available at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FZB2K4XF -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On today's show, professional speaker, author, and someone I call a friend, Tommy Maloney, and I unpack the seven essential things children of divorce truly need. We discuss the importance of parents who listen more and speak less, giving kids the space to express themselves without pressure. We highlight the value of regular access to grandparents, those steady anchors who provide comfort, continuity, and family connection. We also emphasize how powerful it can be when parents take a parenting class, gaining tools to overcome the obstacles associated with co-parenting. We discuss the need for firm boundaries and limitations, especially during times when kids crave stability the most. Tommy and I also explore how crucial it is to speak respectfully about the other parent, protecting a child’s emotional well-being. We touch on consistent rules about access to inappropriate material, making sure kids aren’t exposed to things they’re not ready for. And finally, we discuss the importance of parents having their own emotional support, because children need caregivers who are grounded, regulated, and capable of showing up with compassion. These seven needs don’t require perfection, just intention, understanding, and love.  ABOUT THE GUEST:  Tommy Maloney has spent years in the corporate world as a Training Consultant and Content Creator. He has partnered with brands such as The Home Depot, Bass Pro Shops, PNC Bank, United Airlines, State Farm, Savers/Value Village, and BJ’s Wholesale Club to create impactful learning experiences.
