Mixed Emotions by Brian Norwood

Brian Norwood

DJ Brian Norwood was born during the first seedlings of dance music as we know it today were sprouting. In the 1970s, the Tea Dance at Fire Island's Blue Whale was settling in as ritual and David Mancuso's infamous "The Loft" parties in NYC were just getting started. Being born in the music-rich environment of Nashville would be a harbinger of things to come. And being born in that era would greatly impact his career. In the 90's, Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love, would open its arms to Brian. This move to a more urban environment and being within the twinkle of NYC skyscrapers, is an important transition not only in geography, but of musical awakening. After attending a seminal Saint-At-Large Party with all its intendant revelry, he felt an overwhelming drive to cultivate music and learn to mix. Vinyl was still the preferred medium for DJ's, which gives Brian the unique perspective of being among the younger DJ's still spinning today who teethed on vinyl. In the 90s Brian began to play live shows. His ability to feel the energy of a room and to zero in on what crowds want to hear quickly gained him major name recognition that spread from Philadelphia to the entire nation. Over the last 25 years the notable gigs he has played are too many to count, but include events in every major American city and as far away as Maui, Hawaii and Amsterdam, Netherlands. In 2011 he began podcasting for the ability to reach even more listeners. His Mixed Emotions by Brian Norwood podcasts have been streamed hundreds of thousands of times and continue to be a major asset to his musical career. The sets that have been the most recognized of his work are Sophisticated Morning, Sophisticated Deep, and Sophisticated Chill. These sets are just as their name implies: percolating, hazy, gently rising to an alert state. However, to those unfamiliar with his breadth of music, it would be unfair to characterize him as a “chill” only DJ. It is unlikely that you would have heard music and music mixed like this anywhere else. Brian has a style of playing unique, obscure and ethereal songs that is unmistakably his. This is a true artist that isn't stuck in a genre, who can play for long sets and play to the most demanding crowds. It’s difficult to express with words something as nuanced as music by a sublime DJ. But to paraphrase an old saying, you know it when you hear it. He knows how important a crowd is to a DJ and how important a DJ is to a crowd and he chooses cautiously and carefully the live gigs that he plays. His podcasts can be found on SoundCloud, Apple Podcasts, PodOmatic and HearThis. Whether you hear him at a live performance or on his podcast you’re in for a rare and unique musical trip.

    Sophisticated Morning 98

Hello, dear listener. I hope you've been well since I last dropped in to see you. You've probably noticed that I've been quiet for a minute. In short, life has been life-ing, and I've been being human. Many years ago I told myself (and anyone else who'd listen, haha) a couple of things: first, that I'd give music to the world until the day I die. That's a promise I know I'll keep. Second, that I'd always stay true and authentic as it relates to my artistry and I would never release music just for the sake of having something "new" up at the moment. The quality of my content is much more important than the quantity of it. So...I've been quiet, concentrating on being and staying grounded and nourishing my soul through some interesting times we're in. As they say though, there's always sunshine after the rain. Let it shine... Let's talk about music. Even though it's been spell since you've seen new content released by me that doesn't mean that I haven't been over here endlessly finding the most beautiful new music to present to you. Speaking of new music, wow. We are in such good times for music right now. I believe that because of the "tough times" we're living through that humanity at large is needing comfort and joy. That is showing up with a return to rich and emotionally-driven melodic music. You'll find the best of that here on this new set. Each of my sets fall differently as it relates to the ebb and flow of the energy. Sometimes the set will peak late, sometimes earlier. It's my belief that this set kind of peaks in the middle of the set (and that's OK!). There IS a cohesiveness from beginning to end, so I'm not concerned about where the "peak" is. But about that peak...wow. I have a string of songs that are epic masterpieces. As I sit and type these words I'm listening to that set within this set and I am covered in chill bumps. I hope you'll feel these same "feels" as me. Pay close attention to the set once I get to "Start A Fire" by Above & Beyond. After that I go through Coastlines "Everything All At Once", Aname "Hopeful", WhoMadeWho "Bedside", Topic "I Adore You" and Anthony Keyrouz "Young And Beautiful" -- all powerful masterpieces. Above & Beyond dropped a new album today, July 18th. I present two of the singles from the album (Start A Fire and Quicksand) because of how good they are and also so I could talk about the album. Go listen to it. Run. It's a beautiful collection of heart-driven masterpieces. Start A Fire is probably my favorite single from the album. Featuring Richard Bedford on vocals, it starts chill and low in energy and steadily builds into a hands-to-heaven emotional anthem. Enough with my words. On to the music. As always, this set was conceived and mixed with every ounce of love that I've got to give. From my heart...to your ears. LOVE. Artist/Title/Remix 01. Gheist/Searching Places/Original Mix02. 2025 Epic Maui Journey #4

Welcome to my favorite hour of my favorite day of the entire year. It's hard to put into words how special this day is and what it means to me and so many others but I'll try... Picture it --> 200 of the most beautiful humans to walk this earth on a private beach. Love, unspeakable joy and a rare Spirit have ruled the day. And now...the golden hour is upon us. The sun is slowly lowering towards the horizon of the Pacific ocean and every one and everything is awash in the most breathtaking golden yellow light. There's a magic in the air that just can't be described. I consider every hour important when I'm spinning but I will say that I consider this hour THE hour where, with the right music selections, I can take people's hearts and emotions and send them places that every human should dream to go. This set starts with galloping, emotional anthems and slowly ebbs towards a nostalgic soft landing where I pull out Sarah McLaughlin "Silence", Stereolove Feat. Brian Kennedy "Life, Love & Happiness", Christian Burns "Wonderful Life", Lighthouse Family "High" and Beth Orton "Central Reservation". Everyone was in emotional overload with the gorgeous trance anthems I was playing...and then as I went into the nostalgia set I just kind of sent everyone over the edge (in the best way).  We are a blessed tribe with a long history together. To get to create and take part in the unspeakable joy that unfolded was a blessing I'll always cherish. As always, this set was brought to you with every ounce of love that I've got to give. I hope it touches your heart as much as it did mine and so many others as Epic Maui Journey came to an emotionally powerful conclusion. *I edited this set to remove the very ending of the day, as I was playing more downbeat songs that were perfect for the moment but wouldn't have exactly made sense in podcast form. I feel that the songs I played at the very end of the day were special and to be enjoyed only in that very moment.  #/Artist/Title/Remix 01. Ciaran McAuley/Love Loud/Original Mix 02. Energy is such a profound thing.  It's something that's both silent and unspoken but also always present and within our ability to control.  It's everyone's duty to be mindful of that to ensure that what we're sharing is...good and uplifting.  I keep that in mind when deciding what to share with you.  I've also wanted the energy of these mixes to walk a fine line;  perfect for both 2AM and 2PM.  Obviously what we're all doing at those two different times are very different things.  I use my own real world experiences to guide me on the music choices here.  And what I've found is that the songs you'll hear here are beautiful pieces to have in the background during the day to (subconsciously) affect our day and also have in the forefront during the night to (consciously) drive the fun.  I hope that the energy, the vibes and the messages you hear on this mix lift you up and set you free.  I have no shortage of favorites on this set.  I set the set off with the Kygo produced "Love Me Now Or Lose Me Later" -- a truly powerful heart-tugger.  From there I mix into "One Day" by Dutch emo-pop band Haevn.  They are truly one of my favorite bands ever.  Their sound is rich, authentic and emotionally powerful.  They're not really known here in the Americas so I'm really proud and fortunate to share them with you.  Find them and stream them.  They're incredible.  Otherwise, I've got 17 songs mixed here and have managed to find 5 incredible remakes for the set:  Chasing Cars (#5), You're Not Alone (#10), Sweet Disposition (#12), With Or Without You (#14) and Wonderful Life (#15).  It's so hard to find remakes that are tastefully done and keep the spirit of the original.  So I feel happy to have found these.  Pay special attention to the remake of With Or Without You by U2.  Initially I assumed this would be typically not great.  How pleasantly surprise I was to find this remake really amazing.  It's remixed by organic house master DSF.  In closing the set I chose the gorgeous "Crazy Love" by Above & Beyond featuring vocals by none other than Zoe Johnston.  By the time you reach the end of the set the *energy" will have quietly risen from chill and peaceful to powerfully melodic and progressive.  Hopefully, if I've done my job right, you'll not even notice the energy quietly rising to crescendo.  As always....this set was mixed with every ounce of love I've got to give.  From my heart...to your ears...#/Artist/Title/Remix01.  Matt Hansen/Love Me Now or Lose Me Later/Kygo Original02.  Haevn/One Day/Original Mix03.  Nicholas Gunn/Thought Of You/Extended Mix04.  Susie Ledge/Closer/Extended Mix05.  Sea To Sky/Chasing Cars/Extended Mix06.  Keanler/Orbit/Extended Mix07.  Modera/Dominoes/Extended Mix08.  Zak Abel/Lighthouse/Kygo Original Mix09.  Nicholas Gunn/My Heart/Extended Mix10.  RY X/You're Not Alone/(&friends Extended Mix)11.  KOATES/Undo/John Summit Original Mix12.  Temper Trap/Sweet Disposition/John Summit Extended13.  Hayla/Shiver/John Summit Extended Mix14.  Alex Cruz/With Or Without You/DSF Extended Mix15.  Christian Burns/Wonderful Life/KRYDER Extended Mix16.  Jack Emery/Fickle Heart/Extended Mix17.  Above & Beyond/Crazy Love/ANUQRAM Extended MixFOR WORLDWIDE DJ BOOKING INFORMATION:Instagram:  DJ Brian NorwoodFacebook:  Brian NorwoodEar:  615-418-8900Email:  IamBrianNorwood@gmail.com

    Sophisticated Deep 18

It's so hard to pinpoint which genre is my favorite to mix and present because I love several different genres so much. But it is without question that the sound that I present on these Deep mixes resides right at the top of my list of favorites. Different DJs have different reasons and end-goals for why they DJ. I myself have always wanted to affect people on a higher level. It's more than just entertaining in the pursuit of partying for me personally. I've always wanted my listeners to think deeply about not only the words that they were hearing but also allow the tones, chords and vibes that were permeating into their subconscious to "speak" to them (no words needed!). I search long and hard for those brilliant artists, producers and remixers that make music that's on what I call a higher plane and it's always my pleasure to compile them in a nuanced way to lead you on "little journeys". The Deep mixes are my perfect opportunity to take you to rare and unique places.I mix my DJ sets much like I choose the records that I buy: progression is a must. I go really far out of my way to ensure that each song lures you to the next in anticipation of where you'll go next. You should feel a sense of peace and dreamy happiness as the mix starts and then ever so subtly I weave the energy up so that you end up in a far-away place. I hope that you'll dream and allow your mind to wander (to so many places) as you listen. It's so important for us to "lose ourselves" sometimes...and I hope I can help you do just that. The warm and melancholic harmonies, sinuous chords and tribal influences should "take you there" if I've done this right.I sorted through hundreds (thousands?) of records to present these 15 songs to you. I searched for and mixed them with every ounce of love I've got to give. From my heart...to your ears. Soundcloud and PodOmatic links in the comments section.  #/Artist/Title/Remix01. Sophisticated Morning 94

Several weeks ago I mentioned that this new edition of Sophisticated Morning was going to be deep and moody. At that time I noticed that a great deal of that type of deep house was sitting in my hold bin. Well, that didn't happen. Instead what you're going to hear here (ha!) is very much one of my traditional Morning sets. For those of you that were looking forward to a deeper sound from me, please accept my apologies (but I do have good news for you; there's a Deep set on the horizon). And for those of you that love my traditional sound, well, you're in for a treat. This set is filled with the most current and heart-warming chill house that's out right now. I start the set out with the twinkling pianos of Anam (SE) "Anywhere". The pianos, the message and the vibe are all just so perfect. From there I roll on through piece after piece that's touching my heart at the moment. And just for good measure I threw in one of the biggest feel-good classics of all time "Seven Cities" by Solarstone towards the end. The remix of it is new and really incredible. My personal favorites on the set are #1 "Anywhere", #3 Le Youth "Overgrown", #6 Kairos Grove "I Don't Mind (Robby East Remix), #8 Tinlicker "Nothing To Lose", #11 ARTBAT "Coming Home" and the very last song, #11, Flight Facilities "All Your Love". I always hesitate to mention my favorites -- but the truth is -- I do have my favorites, just like you do. I love every song on this set. It just happens that those are my very VERY favorites. I hope you'll listen...and love what I did. From my heart...to your ears. #/Artist/Title/Remix 01. Anam (SE)/Anywhere (Road Trippin')/Original Mix02. OCULA/High Tides/Extended Mix03.
