    On this episode of Geektown Talks To…, Dave Elliott sits down in person with composer Fil Eisler for an eighth interview, five years after their last conversation. Fil has created the music for a huge range of film and television projects, including Revenge, Empire, UnREAL, Thunder Force and The Desperate Hour. His latest work includes Netflix’s Outer Banks, CBS dramas Fire Country and Sheriff Country, and the fantasy film Momo. During the interview, Fil discusses bringing Outer Banks to an end after five seasons, how its music grew alongside the Pogues, and the unusual instrument behind one of the show’s most recognisable themes. He also talks about expanding the world of Fire Country through Sheriff Country, giving the spin-off its own more acoustic identity and encouraging UK viewers to “spot the dulcimer”. The conversation also explores Fil’s deeply personal connection to Momo and the creation of its end-title song, “Time Is All We Have”, with Sam Ryder. That leads to stories from a songwriting retreat near Glastonbury, rediscovering his songwriting muscles and discovering that Sam apparently possesses an inexhaustible supply of energy.     In 1993, Hollywood took the bright colours, bouncing rhythms and cheerful nonsense of Super Mario Bros. and transformed them into a wet cyberpunk dystopia filled with fungus, humanoid dinosaurs and Dennis Hopper. It was only the beginning. For the next three decades, video game adaptations repeatedly reproduced the names, costumes, monsters and locations that players recognised, while struggling to understand the experience that made those games matter. Street Fighter tried to turn a character-select screen into a military action film. Resident Evil replaced vulnerability with superhuman spectacle. Assassin’s Creed recreated the rooftops but kept dragging audiences back into rooms where people explained genetic memory. In this episode of Geekstorians, Dave explores why video games presented Hollywood with an adaptation problem unlike books, comics or television. Games are not only stories or worlds. They are things players do, built around movement, timing, failure, discovery and the relationship between a player’s hands and a responsive world. From Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider and Doom to Detective Pikachu, Sonic and the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie, the industry slowly began to stop apologising for the source material. Then television pushed the breakthrough further, using Castlevania, Arcane, Twisted Metal, The Last of Us and Fallout to find new ways of replacing the controller without losing the feeling behind it.     Geektown Talks To... ‘Hacks’ Production Designer Rob Tokarz: Building Deborah Vance’s Final Season

    In this episode of Geektown Talks To..., Dave catches up with production designer Rob Tokarz as ‘Hacks’ takes its final bow. Rob first joined the Emmy-winning comedy as an art director in Season 2 before stepping up to production designer, helping shape the increasingly ambitious world surrounding Deborah Vance, Ava Daniels and the wonderfully strange collection of people orbiting them. We last spoke to Rob around a year ago, just before he began prep on Season 5. At that point, he had no idea what the writers were about to throw at him. Now the series has ended, he returns to reveal just how enormous that final challenge became. Rob talks about creating an astonishing number of sets across the season, jumping between Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York and Paris, recreating locations viewers might assume were real, and working alongside visual effects to make some extremely complicated sequences appear completely effortless. We also get into the return to Deborah Vance’s Vegas world, designing pieces of her history that had previously existed only in dialogue, the painstaking details that might never actually be noticed on screen, and how the production design quietly helps tell the story of both Deborah and Ava. Rob also reflects on joining ‘Hacks’ as an art director before eventually taking charge of its production design, the confidence he gained over several seasons, the friendships forged behind the scenes, and which sets from his time on the show will stay with him.     Geekstorians: The Adaptation Trap | Why Faithful Adaptations Can Still Fail

    Why can an adaptation reproduce the characters, costumes, lore and famous moments, yet still feel completely wrong? The problem may not be fidelity, but whether the people rebuilding the story understand what is holding it together. Hollywood loves an established world. The maps already exist. The characters have names. The famous scenes are waiting. The fans are already emotionally invested. On paper, adaptation should be the safest possible form of storytelling. So why do some adaptations change enormous parts of their source and still feel completely right, while others reproduce the surface almost perfectly and somehow miss the point? In this episode of Geekstorians, Dave begins inside the screening room where HBO tested the original Game of Thrones pilot and discovered it had a very expensive problem. The world was on screen, but the audience could not see the machinery connecting it. From the pilot’s reconstruction and the brutal dramatic logic of the early seasons, through the moment the television series ran beyond George R.R. Martin’s published books, the episode explores what happens when an adaptation understands its load-bearing parts, and what happens when it loses the road beneath them. Then, as television launches its post-Thrones fantasy gold rush, Dave looks beyond simple arguments about “faithfulness” to examine The Witcher, The Wheel of Time, The Rings of Power, Foundation, The Boys and The Last of Us. Because adaptation is not the art of making the same thing again. It is the art of rebuilding it without bringing the roof down.
