"The Hope That is in You"

This sermon explores the Christian concept of hope as a living reality rooted in the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the promise of an eternal inheritance. It emphasizes that believers are called to display this hope through their conduct, acting as a witness to the world by overcoming evil with good and maintaining peace even in the face of persecution. The text argues that when others observe this transformed life, they will naturally ask for the reason behind such hope, prompting believers to provide a clear, gentle, and respectful answer. Rather than relying on aggressive apologetics or rhetorical manipulation, the response should focus on the verbs of God's actions, specifically the dying and rising of Jesus. The sermon concludes by urging Christians to maintain a good conscience before God, trusting that the power of the gospel lies in the cross of Christ rather than in human persuasion.

The Right to Lament and Protest

This sermon challenges the reductionistic view that all suffering is direct retribution for sin, arguing instead that Scripture presents a polyphonic reality where God allows lament, protest, and hope to coexist. By examining the Book of Job and the Psalms, particularly Psalm 22, the message affirms that natural human emotions such as grief and anxiety are not inherently sinful but are valid responses to life's trials. The text emphasizes that God, unlike the critical friends of Job, grants believers the latitude to pour out their hearts in honest acknowledgment of their pain without rebuke. Furthermore, it calls the church to extend the same grace and tolerance to one another, urging believers to avoid judging others' motives and to recognize that love covers a multitude of small offenses. Ultimately, the sermon invites the audience to trust in God's presence during the 'dark night of the soul,' finding hope not in the absence of suffering, but in the assurance of divine companionship.

Returning to The Book of Job

This sermon examines the second round of dialogue between Job and his comforters, specifically focusing on Eliphaz's accusation in Job 15 and Job's response in Job 16. The central argument posits that Job's intense lamentations and protests are not acts of rebellion against God, but rather righteous responses to the friends' misrepresentation of God as a vengeful punisher. The text highlights the failure of the comforters to offer genuine compassion, instead relying on a rigid theology of retribution that ignores Job's actual suffering and integrity. By contrasting the friends' judgmental approach with Job's enduring trust, the sermon affirms that God permits His people to express anguish and protest in faith, provided such expressions are suffused with hope in His ultimate purposes for good.

    Being Zealous for The Good

This sermon explores the call for Christians to be zealous for what is good, emphasizing that ethical conduct serves as a primary witness to the world. The message argues that while believers may face opposition, their primary response should be to live under the gaze of God rather than fearing human retaliation. It highlights the theological distinction between moral goodness and divine goodness, urging believers to imitate Christ's example of suffering for righteousness' sake without returning evil for evil. The preacher encourages the congregation to set Christ apart as Lord in their hearts, finding blessing and peace in God's providence even when facing persecution. Ultimately, the sermon calls for a life of excellence and zeal that reflects the character of God, opening the door for effective gospel witness.

    The Life Giving Yoke

This sermon examines the prophetic call for Judah and surrounding nations to submit to Babylonian rule as an act of obedience to God's sovereign will. It contrasts the false assurance of immediate restoration offered by false prophets with Jeremiah's warning that a seventy-year exile is necessary for spiritual formation and eventual blessing. The message emphasizes that while the yoke of foreign domination is harsh, it is ultimately life-giving because it aligns with God's purpose to discipline His people and fulfill His promises. The preacher connects this historical context to the Christian life, urging believers to reject false hope and instead submit to the easy and light yoke of Jesus Christ. This submission leads not to defeat, but to true rest, joy, and participation in the eternal kingdom of God.

    Compassion, Remembrance and Justice

This sermon explores the social and spiritual obligations of the covenant people as outlined in Deuteronomy 15 through 17, emphasizing themes of compassion, remembrance, and justice. The central message highlights the command to release debtors and slaves, illustrating a theology of stewardship where God's blessings are meant for the care of the needy rather than personal exploitation. The discussion connects these Old Testament laws to the New Testament church's responsibility to practice open-handed generosity and maintain purity through discipline. Furthermore, the sermon examines the role of appointed judges and kings, arguing that righteous governance requires a commitment to God's law and a rejection of corruption, ultimately pointing to Jesus Christ as the perfect King who rules with humility and service.

Called to Blessing, Life and Good

The sermon explores the Christian calling to do good and bless others, even in the face of unjust suffering, by examining 1 Peter 3 and Psalm 34. It establishes that God alone defines good and evil, contrasting human self-determination with divine assessment rooted in Genesis. The preacher illustrates this through a personal testimony of military service, demonstrating how consistent repentance and blessing build credibility for the gospel. The message emphasizes that believers are initiated into a life of blessing by God and are called to reflect His likeness by seeking peace and righteousness. Ultimately, the congregation is challenged to evaluate their lives against this simple yet profound calling to bless God and others consistently.

    Jeremiah's Courage and Confidence

The sermon introduces the second major section of the Book of Jeremiah, contrasting the earlier focus on national dismantling with a new emphasis on hope and divine deliverance. It examines Jeremiah 26, where the prophet faces a death sentence for his temple sermon but responds with unwavering confidence in God's sovereignty rather than lamentation. The narrative highlights how God raises up unexpected helpers, such as officials and elders, to spare Jeremiah's life and prevent the nation from bearing the guilt of murdering a faithful messenger. This passage illustrates the multifaceted nature of Jeremiah's ministry, showing him as both inwardly compassionate for his people and outwardly stalwart in proclaiming God's word. Ultimately, the message encourages believers to trust in God's protection and purpose even amidst severe opposition and impending judgment.
