Music Manumit Punkcast - 016 - Re-post of Interview with The Descenters

The Descenters Audio mp3 audio | ogg audio | stream | torrent In this episode: We talk with Matthew Stoff of post-punk band The Descenters. Here are Doug's notes from the interview. https://soundcloud.com/the-descenters https://thedescenters.bandcamp.com/ http://www.jamendo.com/en/artist/376671/the-descenters https://www.facebook.com/TheDescenters Tell us about your music and tell us what’s new! Funny story! Started as a band, but became a one-piece. He even plays live solo! Alternative rock, post-punk, goth. Electronic drums “WE’LL DO IT LIVE!” sorta. Still shakey in the promotion regard he says...but he’s here What software? I don’t see the image Tom does: Image link Ableton is ok for recording ProTools also What influences? nothing pure! melodic vocals: Placebo, Ian Curtis (Joy Division), Morrissey (The Smiths) Matthew overlooked Talking Heads much like Tom overlooked The Smiths “Burning Down the House” - Talking Heads “It’s the End of the World As We Know It” - REM New Album in February 2014 Intense couple of weeks! Did they kick you out of the city? moved from country to Melbourne. Lots of the cultural stuff happens in the south Much cooler in the south lots of songs about the rain Studio? All of it is self-recorded with Ableton. A selection of microphones digital manipulation is cool quick followup? Not as quick as release seems. EP recorded in 2012, but not released until there were CDs always working on new material “Creep” by Radiohead stories you don’t just show up in the study not sure what band he’s talking about. This one? http://www.choochootheband.com/ release set up takes a lot of time! project completely up to him! Artwork? Friends canvas pun! coffee talk Melbourne? post-graduate work now Giggings? not a lot of gigging yet, but going to try to get out more in next 6 months half an album recorded for comic book project Comic book? Robot Boy Destroys the Universe -- experimental electronic music experimental labels http://www.vuzhmusic.com/ deriv.cc “vaguely avant-garde” What drew you to Creative Commons? not much of a local way to get interesting ideas...except off the Internet potential for revolution in approach to culture. It’s a community thing as much as it is about individual expression Why lock down art? large numbers of people is liberating How did you hear about Creative Commons? Might have been in early 2000s “The first set of copyright licenses was released in December 2002.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DeviantArt Where did the project name originate? originally collaboration “an action of moving downward, dropping, or falling.” “a person who dissents.” Plushgoolash interview: link “Smuggly Biege” is the other Plushgoolash Who are some people you think we should try to get on the show (aka, who are the important people in Creative Commons music today)? Music Manumit Punkcast - 015 - Re-post of Interview with Hearse Pileup

Hearse Pileup Audio mp3 audio | ogg audio | torrent In a perfect world, this would have been out on this feed a while back, but that's life. In this episode: We talk with the band Hearse Pileup. Here are Doug's notes from the interview http://hearsepileup.bandcamp.com/ http://www.hearsepileup.de/ad/ ← don’t be fooled, they aren’t in Germany Matt is a web developer. IE6 ← August 27, 2001 Tell us about your music and tell us what’s new! Been around for 3 years Matt started the band after a long period of doing nothing. British art school people are often insular. Tony is an old friend. Band is angry. Matt did listen to a lot of prog, but Where did the project name originate? First drummer came up with the bad luck name. What type of music is it? somewhere between messy punk/noise The Coachwhips (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coachwhips), Queens of the Stoneage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queens_Of_The_Stoneage),  Iggy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iggy_Pop),  White Stripes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Stripes) What’s the deal with “Pretty Shiny Things?” criticism of capitalism while being entrenched in it. Matt works at a design company, where he’s gotten some help with band promo. Johnny Rotten (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lydon) is in a house robe. Rotten apparently did some butter commercials. Martin Atkins: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Atkins “Pay what you want” EP Montage! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JU9Uwhjlog8 What’s the news on the new drummer? just got a new drummer! What’s the news on your gigging schedule? no gigs yet, but that should be changing soon How long has it been? 2 months...which Tom claims is nothing! New material? lots of new stuff...enough for an album, They want to do another music video -- probably something new Defecation is the name of a song! We are eating shit! Matt did graphic design, but likes short films! Violence? songs can be violent, but it comes from a critical standpoint http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragons'_Den  aka http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shark_Tank http://ccmixter.org/view/media/samples CC BY-NC vs. CC BY-NC-SA Just an accident, but maybe not ShareAlike in the future. CCMixter interview Why CC? Why restrict people? Also, a good way for publicity How’d you hear about it? student protest movement. Some people think the pay what you want is being devalued. Wu-Tang clan has one album out! Definitely not Irish: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaolin 7-inch was popular because cheaper CC in London? Not a lot locally. Little Death Machine: http://littledeathmachine.bandcamp.com/ -- not CC Who are some people you think we should try to get on the show (aka, who are the important people in Creative Commons music today)? The Vitamin Pets: http://vitaminpets.bandcamp.com/ , sadly, no derivatives Is there anything else you would like to say/tell us about? Festival upcoming!

Punkcast 014 - The Wild (Re-release of Music Manumit interview)

The Wild mp3 audio | ogg audio | torrent I apologize for the long hiatus loyal Punkcast listeners. I don't have any ETA on when I'll be back. I finish law school in very late April though, so I'm hoping some time after that I can get back in the swing of things. The first thing I need to do is go back through the Music Manumit catalog and see if there is anything I need to re-release. I doubt there is. If there was, I probably would have thought to do it like I am doing now. Anyway, enjoy this interview with Witt from folk punk band The Wild!

Punkcast 013 - Summer 2013 Interview Series: Louis Lingg and the Bombs

Louis Lingg mp3 audio | ogg audio | torrent | unedited video I did a little better on show notes this time. Dogmazic.net is cool! Jamendo is Luxemborg, not French. Jamendo has been unfriendly and banning people. What does "punk" mean to you? Punk rock is political. ALWAYS. Politics is similar Crass! Josh grew up in England. Thatcher is dead! Last time we spoke, things were bad. Are things better in France? Government has changed. Now there is a socialist government. That's the only thing that has changed! Still hunting down immigrants. No human value. French socialism! France cannot welcome all the misery of the world. People that say that are idiots! Immigrants make new innovations! That's why America used to be great. Fascism is there to say "it's all the immigrants fault." What are your touring plans? Always doing crazy concerts. They played in an old mineshaft with insane anarchist squatters in the suburbs of Paris. A lot of luck with the band. Enough room for 200 people in the cave. Played in Berlin recently and got to see squats. Playing Paris all the time. Playing a new squat, aka "Jew Town". Brittany is just green. Acoustic shows all the time. New acoustic recordings coming soon. Getting better at acoustic shows. Police have decibel meters and such bars down. Basically, music is illegal. Some of your stuff is under BY-SA and some is under -NC, why is that? Just trying stuff out. With AF Music (http://www.af-music.de/en/bands/) which started releasing under CC ~6 years ago. Not to be confused with AF Records (http://www.a-frecords.com/) or the Air Force (http://www.afmusic.org/) What are some of your favorite CC punk artists?Pete Vyler If you want to know more, check out the interview Tom and I did with Josh last year. I've also played several of their tracks in the past on the Punkcast. Punkcast 012 - Summer 2013 Interview Series: David Rovics

mp3 audio | ogg audio | torrent | unedited video This summer, I plan on doing interviews every other week with punk artists of various types from all over the world. David Rovics is American, but is currently touring in Scotland. He sat down with me for 20 minutes or so talk to punk music, politics and more. I couldn't really take notes like I normally do when Tom and I do shows together. The plus side of doing these summer shows is that I have ultimate flexibility with scheduling. The down side is that show notes are either not going to happen or will require going back and reconstructing them. I'd also like to apologize to David for taking so long to get this out. I was traveling last week and managed to get sick while doing so.
