    When Pain Becomes Our Identity

This week, we began a new sermon series through the book of Ruth, exploring how pain shapes the stories we tell ourselves and our sense of identity. Throughout this series, we’ll discover how faithful and sacrificial love challenges shame’s false narratives and restores belonging and intimacy. In Ruth 1:16–22, we saw how Naomi’s devastating losses shaped the way she understood herself and God. While her suffering was real, she had begun to see her life through the lens of her pain, allowing her circumstances to define her identity and shape her view of God. Through Ruth’s faithful commitment to remain with Naomi, we see a love that stays present in the midst of grief without demanding that the pain be resolved. We were reminded that while our experiences are real, the conclusions we draw about ourselves and God in our suffering may not tell the whole story. Naomi’s circumstances had not changed by the end of the chapter, but the barley harvest was beginning. Even when we cannot yet see how our stories will unfold, God is still at work. Rather than rushing past our pain, we are invited to bring our grief honestly before God and allow His faithfulness to meet us in the unfinished parts of our stories.

The Power of Good Enough Faith

In this sermon, we explored Galatians 3:1–9 and considered how much faith is needed for God to work in our lives. We were reminded that trusting God does not require perfect confidence or a life without mistakes. Like Abraham, we receive God’s grace through faith and grow by depending on His Spirit. Our confidence rests in God’s faithfulness, and our obedience flows from trusting His promises. Through Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection, we are invited to receive forgiveness, return to God when we stumble, and take the next step of faith, even when we cannot see how everything will unfold.

    Heart & Treasure

Throughout this series, we have explored what it means to be faithful stewards rather than owners, to live wisely, and to give generously. But what if we do all the right things and still miss the point? This week we looked at John 15, when Jesus reminds us that the Christian life is not primarily about what we accomplish for God, but about remaining in relationship with Him. Just as branches cannot bear fruit apart from the vine, our giving, serving, words, and actions were never meant to exist apart from the love that gives them purpose. They are expressions of the heart, not substitutes for it. God is not simply interested in what we produce, but in who we are becoming as He conforms us to the image of Christ. As we abide in His love, we become people who love others as Jesus has loved us, and everything entrusted to us becomes an opportunity to express that love. At Solid Rock, we want to be a church that does more than manage resources, fill volunteer positions, and balance budgets. We want to courageously cultivate life-changing relationships with Jesus and one another. Because stewardship has always been about relationship, and a life spent abiding in Christ and becoming more like Him is never wasted.

    The Tithe & The Offering

In this sermon, we explored Paul’s instructions on giving in 1 Corinthians 16:1-4 and how the hope of the resurrection shapes our stewardship. Because Jesus is alive, we can confidently use what God has entrusted to us to care for others and support the work of the church, knowing our service is not in vain. This generosity begins with a willing heart and grows through regular, thoughtful giving that reflects our circumstances and is handled with accountability. While a tithe can be a helpful starting point, faithful stewardship involves our whole lives as we respond to Christ’s grace with gratitude, trust, and obedience.

    Wise Living

In this sermon, we looked at 1 Timothy 6:3–10 where Paul teaches that wise living requires faithful stewardship of everything God has entrusted to us. This includes guarding the truth of the gospel, cultivating contentment, and being mindful of the desires that shape our hearts. Rather than being driven by comparison, covetousness, or the pressure to have more, we are called to live with gratitude and remember that our identity and value are not found in what we own. Paul also warns that while money itself is not the enemy, the love of money can lead us toward materialism, self-reliance, and misplaced priorities. Ultimately, faithful stewardship begins with recognizing that everything we have belongs to God and learning to wisely manage what He has entrusted to us.

    Stewards, Not Owners

In this opening sermon from our Entrusted series, we looked at how 1 Chronicles 29:10–19 reminds us that everything we have belongs to God and comes from His hand. David’s prayer points us toward gratitude, humility, and joyful generosity, reminding us that even our ability to give is a gift from God. Because our lives are brief compared to God’s eternal nature, we are called to faithfully steward the time, resources, abilities, and influence He has given us, investing in people and purposes that extend beyond our lifetime. Ultimately, faithful stewardship flows from gratitude for what Jesus Christ has done for us, leading us to offer our hearts willingly to God and use all He has entrusted to us for His purposes.

    Emotional Honesty

In this sermon, we looked at Psalm 42 where the psalmist modeled emotional honesty by naming what was happening within him and bringing his whole experience before God. We were challenged to recognize that emotional honesty is not being controlled by our feelings, but learning to pay attention to them and bring what is happening beneath the surface into relationship with God and others. Our emotions can reveal what we fear, desire, need, and value, and when we become curious about them rather than ignoring or numbing them, they can move us toward God, healing, deeper relationships, compassion, and faithful action. We also explored how emotional honesty can shape our culture at Solid Rock by creating space for people to be known without pretending, listened to before being fixed, and drawn toward relationship rather than isolation. As we courageously cultivate life-changing relationships with Jesus and one another, we were reminded that relationships cannot bring transformation to the parts of us we keep hidden.

    Intentional Relationships

In this sermon, we examine the friendship of Jonathan and David in 1 Samuel as a powerful biblical example of intentional relationships. Though their friendship was tested by the painful reality that Jonathan’s own father sought to kill David, they remained steadfast in their love and commitment to one another. Jonathan demonstrated courage, loyalty, compassion, and spiritual encouragement, while David responded with the same faithful love and devotion. Their relationship reflects the kind of Christ-centered friendships God calls His people to cultivate. As we look to Jonathan and David—and ultimately to Jesus, our perfect example—we are challenged to pursue intentional relationships that strengthen one another, reflect God’s love, and bear witness to His transforming work in our lives.

    Lifelong Transformation

In this sermon, we followed Peter’s lifelong transformation from an ordinary fisherman to a Spirit-empowered fisher of men and shepherd of God’s people. When Jesus called Peter, He didn’t ask him to transform himself—He simply said, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Although Peter responded immediately, becoming the man Jesus called him to be was a lifelong process. Through moments of faith, failure, restoration, and suffering, Jesus remained faithful, using even Peter’s mistakes to shape him rather than define him. Peter’s life reminds us that spiritual transformation is not about our strength or ability, but about the faithfulness of Jesus, who continues His work in imperfect people until they become more like Him.

    Expositional Preaching

In this sermon from our SR Mission & Values series, we explore why expositional preaching is about far more than gaining biblical knowledge—it’s about knowing Jesus as He has truly revealed Himself. In 2 Peter 3:15–18, Peter warns that Scripture can be twisted, false teaching can lead people astray, and believers can lose the stability that comes from being rooted in God’s truth. His concern is deeply pastoral because a distorted understanding of God’s Word ultimately leads to a distorted view of God Himself. As we faithfully study God’s Word, we are protected from error, anchored in truth, and grow in both the grace and knowledge of Jesus, leading to a stable, vibrant, and ever-deepening relationship with Him.

    Courageous Availability

In this sermon, we looked at how God carries out his mission on earth through ordinary people who are willing to be courageously available. In Acts 9:10–19, a disciple named Ananias demonstrates courageous availability by responding, “Here I am, Lord,” when Jesus calls him to approach Saul, a man he has good reason to fear. Ananias acknowledges his fear without surrendering to it, closes the distance, and trusts Jesus with the outcome. His obedience does not transform Saul, Jesus does, but it allows Ananias to participate in Saul’s extraordinary story. In the same way, our fall ministries are not simply programs to fill our schedules; they are places where we can courageously move toward Jesus and one another. As we make ourselves available, join community, serve, invite, invest, ask for help, and initiate difficult conversations, Jesus can use our ordinary obedience to cultivate life-changing relationships.
