How to Ski Patagonia: Season, Terrain, and Chile vs Argentina | After Hours by 57hours ep. 5

August and the first half of September are the best weeks to ski Patagonia, though higher areas open in late June. Monte Johnston skis both sides of the Andes. With Viktor he covers Chile or Argentina, where the skiing is, and what a day asks of you. The ski zone sits in the northern Lakes District, on the Chile and Argentina border, nowhere near the Fitz Roy country most people picture when they hear Patagonia. You ski at 2,800 to 3,000 m, kept low on purpose so altitude never slows you down, and a day runs 600 to 1,200 m of skinning with about double that going back down. Old fixed-grip lifts do half the work for you. What Monte and Viktor get into: When to go, and what happens if you turn up too early or too lateChile or Argentina, and how the two sides actually differCerro Catedral, Cerro Bayo, Antillanca and Puyehue, one by oneThe Frey Hut above Bariloche, and what a catered refugio is really likeMules carrying your gear up, and skiing inside a volcano on a glacierTerrain from open volcano flanks to 45 and 50 degree couloirs Monte Johnston is an ACMG Ski Guide and AMGA/IFMGA Mountain Guide based in Squamish, British Columbia, and the owner of Black Sheep Adventure Sports. Worth saying plainly: he doesn't run Patagonia on open dates. He'll take a private group down, which is how his own trips there have happened, but it isn't sitting on a calendar waiting to be booked. His season is at home in British Columbia, plus Japan most winters. After Hours by 57hours is a podcast about the guides, the destinations, and the trips worth planning a year out for. New episodes monthly.
