    Stop Carrying What Isn’t Yours

Some of us don’t just care about people. We carry them. Their problems. Their decisions. Their disappointment. Their moods. Their expectations. Their outcomes. And then we wonder why we’re exhausted. In this episode of Pilot Light, Josh talks directly to the helpers, fixers, parents, leaders, caregivers, and responsible people who can easily confuse loving someone with taking responsibility for their life. There is an important difference between saying, “I’m here to help,” and believing, “This is mine to fix.” You’ll hear why helping and rescuing are not the same thing, why someone else’s disappointment doesn’t automatically mean you’ve done something wrong, and why constantly solving another person’s problems may actually keep them from developing the strength they need. Josh also tackles one of the hardest truths for people who deeply care about others: you cannot want change for someone more than they want it for themselves. You can encourage. You can teach. You can pray. You can open doors. You can walk beside them. But eventually, they have to walk. This week’s Flame Challenge is to identify one thing you’re carrying that doesn’t actually belong to you. Ask what part is truly your responsibility, what belongs to the other person, and then faithfully do your part—without taking ownership of theirs. You are called to love people. You are not called to become their savior. Sometimes the most loving thing you can do is open your hands and put down what was never yours to carry. 💬 Continue the Conversation: I'd love to hear what this episode stirred in you. The Conversation You’re Avoiding Is Costing You

Sometimes what looks like peace is really just avoidance. Nobody is arguing. Nobody is upset. Everything seems fine on the surface—but underneath, frustration, hurt, resentment, or an important truth is being left unspoken. In this episode of Pilot Light, Josh explores the difference between peacekeeping and peacemaking—and why loving people well sometimes requires walking directly into an uncomfortable conversation. Peacekeepers ask, “How do I keep everybody happy?” Peacemakers ask, “What does this relationship need in order to be healthy?” You’ll hear why silence isn’t always kindness, why avoided conversations rarely disappear, and why clarity and kindness have to work together. Josh also explores one of the hardest lessons for people who naturally want harmony: someone being disappointed with you does not automatically mean you’ve done something wrong. Real relationships require courage. They require the ability to tell the truth without attacking, listen without becoming defensive, set boundaries without becoming cruel, and allow people to have feelings you don’t have to fix. This week’s Flame Challenge is simple—but it may not be easy: have one conversation you’ve been avoiding. Don’t enter it to win, punish, or unload everything you’ve rehearsed in your head. Enter it to create understanding. Bring clarity. Bring kindness. Bring courage. And leave room to listen. Because peacekeeping avoids tension. Peacemaking walks through it toward something healthier. 💬 Continue the Conversation: I'd love to hear what this episode stirred in you. The Present of Presence

When someone we care about is hurting, our instinct is often to fix it. We offer advice. We make a plan. We search for solutions. We start explaining what they should do next—sometimes before they’ve even finished telling us what happened. But what if the person sitting across from us doesn’t need an answer? What if they simply need to feel heard? In this episode of Pilot Light, Josh explores the difference between helping someone and helping them in the way they actually need. Sometimes our desire to fix a problem comes from love. Other times, it comes from our own discomfort with sitting beside someone when we can’t make everything better. You’ll discover why advice offered too quickly can feel like dismissal, why good questions can be more powerful than good answers, and why supporting someone doesn’t always mean removing the struggle they’re facing. Josh also shares one simple question that can completely change a conversation: “Do you want me to help you solve this, or do you just need me to listen?” This week’s Flame Challenge is to have one conversation where your goal isn’t to advise, teach, or fix—but simply to understand. Because sometimes the person in front of you doesn’t need your wisdom. They need your presence. They need to know that even when everything isn’t okay, they don’t have to face it alone. 💬 Continue the Conversation: I'd love to hear what this episode stirred in you. Why Do Strangers Get the Best of You?

We can be patient, attentive, and gracious with people all day long...then come home and have almost nothing left for the people we love most. Why does that happen? In this episode of Pilot Light, Josh takes an honest look at how easy it is to give our best energy to work, responsibilities, strangers, social media, and everyone who needs something from us...while the people closest to us quietly receive whatever remains. This isn’t about being perfect at home. We all get tired. Life gets heavy. The question is whether our exhaustion has become a pattern where everyone else consistently receives our patience and attention while our family gets our leftovers. Josh explores why presence is more than simply being in the same room, how familiarity can slowly turn into carelessness, and why our attention may be one of the most meaningful ways we communicate love. Because healthy relationships usually aren’t built in spectacular moments. They’re built on ordinary Tuesdays—in conversations, small acts of service, inside jokes, listening, showing up, and making someone feel like, for a few minutes, nothing else matters more. This week’s Flame Challenge stays close to home: choose one person you love and give them thirty minutes of completely undivided attention. No phone. No television. No multitasking. Just be there. Go do meaningful work. Lead. Serve. Encourage people. Use everything God put inside you. But don’t become so busy lighting fires everywhere else that the people waiting at home are sitting in the dark. Give the people you love something better than your leftovers. Give them you. 💬 Continue the Conversation: I'd love to hear what this episode stirred in you. Encouragement Is More Powerful Than You Think

Some words stay with us for years. A teacher who said, “You’re a good writer.” A coach who told you, “You’re a leader.” A parent who said, “I’m proud of you.” A friend who reminded you, “You’re stronger than you think.” In this episode of Pilot Light, Josh explores the surprising power of encouragement—and why the good things we notice about people should not stay trapped inside our heads. Real encouragement is not flattery. It is the act of seeing something true in someone and giving it language. Sometimes people need us to believe in them before they are fully able to believe in themselves. You’ll hear why specific encouragement matters more than generic praise, why progress deserves to be recognized before perfection arrives, and why waiting until “later” to say something meaningful can mean missing the moment entirely. Through the story of Barnabas, Josh also explores how one person’s belief and encouragement can shape lives far beyond what they will ever personally see. This week’s Flame Challenge is simple: say the good thing. Choose three people. Tell each of them one specific thing you see in them, why it matters, and then let the encouragement stand on its own. Because sometimes people borrow our belief in them until their own belief catches up. Don’t leave the good things unsaid. 💬 Continue the Conversation: I'd love to hear what this episode stirred in you. Stop Waiting for People to Ask for Help

Some people who need help the most will never ask for it. Not because they don’t want someone to care, but because asking can be hard—especially for the people who have spent years being the strong one, the dependable one, the fixer, the helper, or the person everyone else counts on. In this episode of Pilot Light, Josh explores what it means to truly notice people before they reach a breaking point. You’ll hear why “Let me know if you need anything” can sometimes put too much responsibility back on an already overwhelmed person, why asking the second question can open the door to a real conversation, and why the strongest people in your life may be the ones who most need someone to check on them. This week’s Flame Challenge is simple: check on the strong one. Reach out to someone who is usually carrying everyone else. Don’t ask because you need something. Don’t rush to give advice or fix the problem. Just ask how they’re really doing—and stay long enough to hear the answer. You don’t have to rescue everyone. You just have to care enough to notice. Because sometimes passing the flame means reaching first. 💬 Continue the Conversation: I'd love to hear what this episode stirred in you. The People Who Changed Your Life Probably Don't Know They Did

Some of the people who changed your life probably have no idea they did. Maybe it was a teacher who believed in you, a coach who pushed you, a friend who showed up at exactly the right moment, or someone who said a few simple words you never forgot. In this episode of Pilot Light, Josh explores the extraordinary power of ordinary influence—the conversations, encouragement, examples, and small acts of kindness that can quietly alter the direction of someone’s life. We often think making a difference requires a platform, a title, or some dramatic moment. But some of the greatest influence happens when nobody is keeping score. A word spoken at the right time. Someone who sees potential you can’t yet see in yourself. Someone who leaves a little light behind without ever knowing how far it traveled. This week’s Flame Challenge is personal: think of someone who helped light your pilot light. Reach out to them. Tell them specifically what they did and why it mattered. And then ask yourself a bigger question: Whose life might be different someday because you chose to do the same? Never underestimate what God can do through one ordinary person who chooses to notice, encourage, and pass the flame. 💬 Continue the Conversation: I'd love to hear what this episode stirred in you. Who Are You Leaving the Light On For?

What if changing the world starts smaller than you think? In the Season 2 premiere of Pilot Light, Josh introduces The Flame Challenge—a simple invitation to stop worrying about lighting the whole world and start bringing light to the space right in front of you. A text. A phone call. An encouraging word. An act of kindness. Forgiveness. Showing up for someone who needs it. None of those things seem extraordinary on their own, but small acts of light have a way of multiplying. You may never know how far one moment of encouragement travels or how deeply it affects someone who desperately needed it. This episode is about influence, intentionality, and recognizing that you don’t need a huge platform to make a meaningful difference. You simply need to notice the person God has already placed in your path. The challenge is simple: find one person this week and intentionally encourage them. Then share the story. You may not be able to change the whole world today—but you can change one person’s world. One light can change everything. Pass the flame. 💬 Continue the Conversation: I'd love to hear what this episode stirred in you.
