The Stigmergic Control Theory - English

In this episode of A Bit Off, we introduce Dr. Rahav Dor’s Stigmergic Control Theory — a new framework for building highly reliable decentralized systems in environments where real-world constraints limit communication across cyber-physical systems and IoT networks. Originating in Dr. Dor’s Ph.D. research, the theory addresses one of the central challenges facing modern society: how to enable distributed devices, controllers, robots, sensors, and intelligent agents to act coherently without relying on constant communication, centralized coordination, or consensus. The implications are significant. As autonomous systems, resilient defense, industrial automation, intelligent healthcare, and precision agriculture become critical to how modern society functions, ensuring reliability and safety at scale becomes increasingly challenging. Stigmergic Control Theory offers a new way to think about how we build systems and a path toward systems that can remain dependable even when the networks are unreliable and computers can fail unpredictably. The underlying technology is patent-pending. This episode is for curious listeners interested in science, engineering, intelligent systems, distributed computing, and the surprising ways complex systems can work in the real world. Deep thanks to Uri Gafni, whose vision, creative direction, and production work brought this episode into reality.

In the first episode of A Bit Off, we introduce the ideas developed in Dr. Rahav Dor’s Ph.D. dissertation. His research on new ways to build highly reliable distributed systems led him to formalize Stigmergic Control Theory — a framework for building dependable decentralized systems. The episode explains, in everyday Hebrew and for a general audience, how independent devices, controllers, or agents can work together without directly communicating with one another. Drawing on the intuition of how bee colonies coordinate without direct communication or central control, the conversation explores how coordination can emerge from the environment itself — and why this matters for building systems that remain reliable even when communication is limited, delayed, or disrupted. This episode is for curious listeners interested in science, engineering, smart systems, distributed computing, and the surprising ways complex systems can work.
